Step 3: When you have set up an account with Google, remain signed in, or if you already have a G-mail account (a Google account), sign in to begin the process and then continue to sign into Google +.

Step 4: As you first log into G+ it is important to setup and fill in your profile. This will provide you with more flexibility and options for using your G+ account in the future, so click on “Create Profile”.

Step 5: Fill out your personal information and the username that you want everyone to see, then click on the “Upgrade” option.

Step 6: On the next screen, G+ will ask you to add anyone you might already know from a suggested friends list. You can do this now if you like, but you can always wait to begin building your circles at a later time.

I will be covering building a following in much greater detail, later in the next training module (Module B). To move on to the next step just click “Next” on your Google+ screen and select the next page of this tutorial.

JChrisA I have never used a social media site before and I don't have pictures I need for my cover page for my G+ but I am setting this up for my business are you saying that I shouldn't do it that way and just use it as a personal site so I'm confused so then how am I to finish the WA lesson I'm on step 10 in your lesson about setting it up personal with cover photos also if I don't have photos do you have any way for me to find photos I can use or art I can do?

Hello JChris

Social Media is a breeze. I have many Social Media sites and not one of them has a photo. Everything that I have used are images gathered through searching the internet and amassing a collection.

Images are easy to acquire. There are paid images sites that you can use to avoid any kind of copyright issues, but I just do a search with the subject type picture I seek, add image or video at the end and you will get plenty to choose from.

I have found that many places will inform you if the image or video you have selected has any issues regarding copyright infringement. Your choice decides.

If you have no plans for a Google + personal page, then set the page as a Brand Page and treat it just the same. You can always create a personal page later on if your inclined. Post images and post as you may, and again, you do not have to upload any photos if you do not have them.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Cheers
Brad

I agree with Brad. There are a few sites that will not charge but you have to look at each photo to see that. I mostly just search in google to what type of photo I'm looking for, if I don't already have my own saved to my PC, and download it there. You can tell if it will be a copywright on it or not. Best wishes for your success.

These lessons are awesome - very helpful for where I'm currently at! Just thought I'd let you know 1240px x 700px works good for the google+ banner/cover image thingy. Thanks for going through everything in such detail, and including your reasons. I'm feeling really lost, wandering around google. I'm hoping it'll get easier with use!

Hello,

I have been looking for Google + training, but a lot of the training for G+ is pretty outdated. This is understandable, since Google makes changes frequently. When did you originally create this, and is it still somewhat current?
Reply
JChrisA Premium
It has been awhile...G+ used to have 2 almost completely different formats...everyone liked the classic one and that is the one my training was based on as it was by far the most relevant...but, several months ago, they eliminated the classic forcing everyone into the newer (and of course not really as good) version. I stopped promoting my training at that time with the intent of redoing it later, but it remains several items down on my priority list, as I am very very busy.

I guess not too many WA members have focused their attention on doing G+ training under the new format. The next best thing would be to see if anyone on YouTube has studied it out...unfortunately Google does a terrible job of educating G+ users on changes, leaving folks to search, experiment and figure things out for themselves....hopefully someone on YouTube has done this...if you find it, then you might want to make a WA version of it and promote the training yourself and earn WA credits! :)

Hi Chris,

Can you help with the first question and I send an attachment to see how hard to coonect my Domain to WP bacause one.com does not sshow me where to put WA nameservers.
Thanks
Reply
JChrisA Premium
According to One's support FAQs, you need to access the control panel to change the DNS numbers...I found numerous references to this under "support", under "domain", under "DNS". or if you are still having problems, they have a live chat feature and should be able to assist you further. I don't have an account there, so I don't have access to any more details than that. :)

Hi, my Google+ account is about 4 or 5 days old, my concern is that other peoples stuff are crowding my stuff, how do I set my account in such a way that my posts are on top. Thank you

The only one who can post to your Profile/Posts page is you. You must be viewing a page where it is showing a composite of users.

The only page you will have control over is your own...similar to your Facebook personal page versus your Facebook news feed page.

Hi, is there any benefits for sharing post in the communities? Thanks
Reply
JChrisA Premium
Yes, there is! Great question...especially in the larger communities where "exposure" is generally greater...here's the deal. A community that has say 10,000 members may only have a couple of dozen very active people posting to it, but the number of people actively following them might be 3,000-5,000...that's significant.

Also, it is those 3,000-5,000 that are most likely to comment or share...that's also significant. But, if you really want to do something different and special, then why not run a "free" ad campaign on Google+!

That's what my next training release will be all about! :)

cover image is not uploading :( why?
Reply
JChrisA Premium
Could be one of several reasons...is the image a jpeg format? This is the main format most uploaders use...I would not use a tiff, bmp or png format, as it might not be accepting those...is the image within the accepted size range? Should ideally be around 1080x610 I believe (there is a minimal size it must be or it won't upload at all)...might need to resize it or choose another....if you are using FireFox browser, you might want to try Google Chrome. Browsers can behave in strange ways...it is most likely one of these problems, or a problem with your internet service provider. Hope that helps.

Thanks Chris. I found out its because of pixels, it says its too small. I have no idea how to cange that!

The answers to most questions can easily be discovered through the WA info window/bar....look straight above this message for the WA logo and black band that runs across the top of your WA main page...in the middle of the black band, type in these words: resizing images...then, simply select from the top offerings...any or all of these should easily show you how.

This is the quickest way to get bits of information and know how you need on just about any topic that comes up here at WA. :)

Hi Chris,

I understood everything you discussed until this topic G+ Page Cover Image. I am not sure where that would be; can you help?
https://plus.google.com/u/0/
Reply
JChrisA Premium
Hi, James!

The cover image is the background image which is placed at the top of your profile page, along with your personal or business thumbnail image.

There is a generic default image already there. Many people don't bother to change it, but I recommend using it as another means to identify your website. After all, the main reason for doing G+ or any social media in the first place is to boost our website activity, either by direct referral or by increased search engine rankings.

Google has chosen to "hide" how this is changed for some unknown reason. The thumbnail picture icon which is supposed to represent a camera is clearly visible when you are logged into your account and on your profile page, but there is another camera icon that is there as well, but doesn't appear until you happen to run your mouse over that spot (if you are not logged in then it won't appear at all).

So, just move your mouse around over the background image area in the lower right hand corner and it should appear. Then it is simply a matter of following the prompts to upload the image of your choice.

Hope that helps! :)

Thank you for this module. Since I'm also a musician and I already have an G+ account tied to that activity, I was was wondering if I should create a separate one for the totally different business I started recently. Your tutorial gave me the answer on why it might not be a good idea :)
Reply
JChrisA Premium
Hi...there are good points, both for and against, so I wouldn't say there is a one size fits all answer. For example if you have a really great following already established for an interest like your music, then I would be motivated to try to find a way to tie into that.

If on the other hand, you rarely used the account, then it might not matter that much, especially if the following is very small. My main point was that either way, a personal account for social media is a lot like putting your personal picture on your affiliate marketing website...it establishes your credibility and that's a big part of eventually being successful.

Most people look at business pages on Facebook like they are meeting a car salesman...instead, ideally, we want to be recommending purchases as helpful friends, instead. A personal page goes much further in accomplishing this.

Something to think about...but, new or old account, either way a personal is the better option in my opinion.

Howya sir, very interesting, and checking this info out has shown me some of the stuff G+ does. I still find it confusing, but will try stick with it as much as practical. However It seems time consuming and it's v hard not to get distracted by some of the posts. Right you could call it research I know. Also, have you ever heard of hootesuite? Tis a platform/dashboard for helping ppl keep track of multiple profiles, up to 20 I believe for a modest fee. €7 a month I think.

Reply
JChrisA Premium
That's a really good question. I think there is a perception that we need to be on all of these platforms, when what we really need is to be shared on all of these platforms.

I would suggest choosing 2 or maybe 3 at the most and going with those...be good at 2, instead of not very good at 6! I focus all my social media time on G+ and Pinterest (and doing videos on YouTube as time permits).

My wife, Carla, does Facebook on and off as she has time, but I really don't worry about Facebook and Twitter, because if this business ever gets big enough, there are lots of services and automated apps out there and you can pay to do most of the Facebook and Twitter management for you. :)

I am totally confused on this. I thought I remember hearing Kyle say to create a g-mail account gearing it to your business. And, where do I create the cover image?
Reply
JChrisA Premium
There are 3 ways to use G+...as a business page...a personal page...or you can have both. I take the approach that I am selling myself, as the brand along with the business...so, i prefer to have people come to my page seeing that they are interacting with me...not just a business.

As for the cover image, Google chooses to hide this and why I don't know...make sure you are logged in and then hover over the cover image area and in the lower right hand corner, the camera icon will appear only as you hover over it...click it and follow the prompts.

Generally, I like to keep it simple, but I found it simpler to have 4 personal accounts, each one with a single circle in it, rather than messing with many circles in one account...but, that is just my preference...I use my cover image to display my website addresses, logos and slogans....after all, my posts will all have links in them anyway.

Hope that helps. :)

They do keep changing things. Unfortunately, it is hard to know where it will end up, seeing how they don't even seem to know...still, it is one of many Google products that can boost your search engine rankings...and Google search still accounts for about 85% of all search engine traffic. Get just a little piece of that pie and you are set! :)

If you are wanting to change everything, but the name and associated Google account, then you can keep the current G+ page and simply change the appearance of it.

If you want to change the name and underlying account info, then I would recommend starting the process by setting up a whole new account in Google...the disadvantage to that it is like beginning all over again.

This is why I always recommend setting up a personal account featuring you...and then operate it as a business account. You put your personal picture there, but the cover graphic is your business.

Then, if your business changes or you add more businesses, you simply change the cover image. This works well, because you are really selling yourself as a big part of your website's credibility

I cover these things in Module A of the G+ Traffic Training, as well as how to set things up from the start with a new Google account.

Hope that helps. :)
