We all would like to make our websites look more professional and sometimes it would be nice just to use anything we find online in our websites to do just that but that's a big no no!
WHAT IS FEDERAL LAW?
FEDERAL LAW gives copyright owners property rights to use in their own copyright works for a lifetime plus 70 years.
If you own said work nobody else can use it without permission as long as you are alive plus 70 years after you have gone, if however someone is caught doing so they could have to pay you civil damages......and you don't want that do you?
COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT
If you use anybody's property rights without permission you will be guilty of copyright infringement, I even had to be careful doing research for this (ironic isn't it?)
You could play dumb and say you didn't know it was someone else's work but it still won't excuse you from using the material without consent.
There are some exceptions for permissible usage of copyright material.
- If you are a university professor or an academic scholar you might be able to use a quote from a piece of copyright work for teaching material as long as you provide attribute.
- Public domain use of expired copyright material.
SO WHAT IS CLASSED AS COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL?
Basically anything that's not yours that you haven't paid for....SIMPLES!
