• Windows updates killing my data

Windows 10 has the habit of sneakily working in the background to download and install updates. While not being interrupted to manually allow an update may seem like a benefit to some, it has turned out to be a nightmare for those with metered connections.

As an example, the Windows 10 update in November to version 1511 was a whopping 3GB in size. Background updates usually require several hundred megabytes, which can be catastrophic on mobile Internet accounts.

You can limit Windows’ usage of your mobile data by altering the Wi-Fi Settings.

In the settings go to Network & Internet ---> Wi-Fi ---> Advanced Options. As shown above, you’ll see the option to set your Wi-Fi as a metered connection. This only works for one Wi-Fi network at a time; updates will continue to automatically download when you connect to a new network that isn’t considered metered.

Unfortunately, this option doesn’t work for PCs with an Ethernet connection.

Thank you for your thoughtful guidance about the WIN 10 changeover.
So because I have a pc with ethernet connection...3GB could be downloading in the background without me knowing?
