After hearing a few questions about whether Facebook Boost promotions were effective. I Decided to make a little case study on one of my posts to see if a cheap £2/$3 Boost worked and how much traffic it generated.

Jay has a very comprehensive guide on the actual process of boosting posts on Facebook so there is no real need to cover old ground. I just wanted to present my results.

Also I was wondering. When I tried to boost my page I could choose people with the same interest as mine, but it's seems that when I tried to boost a post, I can't ? I only have the option to choose woman/men, age and localision. Am I wrong ?

Yeah I got the same option. I guess FB has its reasons but for some posts the regional option is perfect and same with targeting gender in some cases. Maybe adding in interests would be just too complicated for FB? or would be so precise you wouldn't get enough hits?

Not sure the reasons but I got the same options as you so you were not doing anything wrong.

Ok, thanks for your feedback. The regional option and gender could already be a great idea for some posts actually. I have no idea why FB don't let us add interest, maybe you're right it's too complicated

For example I just check my GA and it's seems that 2/3 of people reading my site are woman between 25-44. So maybe next time I could try to focus on these?

Yeah using data gathered from one boost would certainly be very useful in narrowing down the next. Probably pays to be pretty broad in your first and then use that to target more targeted promotions !

Thanks. Do you think I need to use data gathered from my first boost only or do I have also to check in general in GA ?

If you can know your audience from previous data then all the better. We can all guess our audience but if we have hard data to prove it you can be so much more confident!

This is what the trump campaign did just on a much much larger scale!

OK thanks for your feedback. Actually it is hard to say for sure, but since the boost i have earn small commissions with affiliate link for about 10$ already. I can't be sure, they came from the boost as i also shared this post on many FB groups too.

Thanks for this case study. That was great. Now you have to see if someone actually will buy something during the 30 days. I need to check more carefully on GA what was going on during my boost but I'm not a master of GA yet. Ho did you check precisely your traffic ?

GA Is a little cluncky at first but really powerful when you get the hang of it.

On you home page the box in the top left is you audience overview. If you click "audience overview" in the bottom left of that box it takes you into a more detailed view

now in audience overview mode, In the top right hand corner you can select the date range. For seeing detailed traffic you can select the individual days which then show when people were visiting for that particular day. So you can see precisely when the boost started delivering hits to your site.

Hey Stephen,

As I was reading your tutorial, I got to wondering how many of the 51 visitors to your website added to your site's bounce rate.

Thanks for sharing your test results.

Well I have to be honest, the vast majority were Bounces!

It's hard to but a precise number on it but I would suggest around 90-95%!

I think that's the nature of FB Traffic people are just passing a bit of time not researching intently. Its why SEO is still king.

True ... and bounce rate is NOT good.

Hello Stephen, good analysis. I have also boosted my posts from time to time on Facebook. It has not increased my following immensely, nor my likes, but I have seen increases in both, depending on the post. What I have found is that my hits are increasing, slowly but surely. Hopefully this will result in those individuals returning and clicking on my affiliate links.

Hi Harvey,

Yep there is always the hope they have bookmarked for future reading or such. But IMO It's best to still focus on trusty Free SEO through quality content creation!

Great case study very interesting, So what are your plans for Facebook sens you've gotten 0 hit 1 engagement

Hi Anthony.

To be clear they were extra like/comments because of the boost. My plans for Facebook are still being formulated. Boosting certainly doesn't seem to be a great way to build social followers.

Hopefully I will get a lot more social followers as my SEO Traffic increases.
