People usually say they don’t like pop-ups and there are many pop-up blockers. But did you know pop-ups are very effective. That is, if they are used the right way.

There is content here at Wealthy Affiliate that suggests what the “right way” for using pop-ups is. Click here if you want to check it out.

In this article, I’d like to explore everyday life examples that illustrate how annoying pop-ups can be. I share this with you with the intention of making you laugh. But also, make you think in your visitors whenever you place a pop-up from here on.

Pop-ups can ruin your user experience if placed without criteria. Please avoid these mistakes.

Here is a list of the mistakes we’ll be dealing with in this training.

1. Don’t welcome your visitors with a pop-up the very moment they place their foot in the door of your site (page 1).

2. Don’t expect your visitors to trust you if you haven’t built trust with them (page 2).

3. Don’t suppose your visitors will just hand you their personal email 3 seconds after they land your site (page 3).

4. Be careful what you tell your visitors on the “reject button” of a Yes/No pop-up. Please don’t insult them (page 4).

5. Don’t only think in how many emails you’ll capture. Also put yourself in your visitor’s shoes (page 5).

6. Don’t keep on doing the same thing if it’s not delivering results (page 6).

    Enjoy this cartoon.

Yes, you're right. Most site owners treat lightly their readers attention. And that's the result: Good bye to their site!

Yes, I have felt the same but I found if you set up your pop-up to pop-up within the first 5 seconds or less and then not reappear it is a very good way to get more signups

The trouble many people go crazy with them

I just started using a pop-up recently, and I did avoid them because they are annoying. I found I could use a pop-up without annoying my readers by setting it to appear once 5 seconds after they visit my website.

The majority of readers don't get started reading in this length of time, so this has been working very well for me and I am receiving steady sign-ups since using this strategy

I suggest you avoid using more than one pop-up and set it to only appear once, so that is my experience I hope it helps some of you to use them more effectively

Hi Jeff! I appreciate you have shared your experience with us. Yes, more than one pop-up is too much.

And always placing our pop-up with our visitors in mind is the correct way to go.

Thank you very much for stopping by and for your useful insight. All the best with your online business! Keep well!

Good you're trying different pop-ups. Testing things such as timing or placing pop-ups when visitor show exit intention and comparing results can really improve UX on your site while growing your mailing list.

I am experiencing them a lot but I ignore them. They can be very distracting when you want to focus. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, they are distracting. And they should not be that way... Pop-ups should come up when most of us are feeling grateful towards the content creator. But most seem to not be whiling to wait till that happens.
