In the following image I've changed some of the background color and resized the original as an example of just a couple of things that can be done using an image editor, and is not possible in Site Content.
You can do virtually anything to an image using a good image editor. In the image below I used several different images, created transparencies for each one, then cropped and resized them as required and layered them one on top of the other to produce the final image that I used on one of my sites::

A couple of years ago, I found a mini free Photoshop software... I'm sure I saved it. I'll look for it...

Thank you Brian. Just what I needed as I was trying to use Windows Paint to edit an image. And failing. So I will experiment and practice with GIMP.
