First thing first

Before we go creating our custom drop down menus it is important to get a general understanding for the kind of menus we can create for our WordPress websites. Have ing this understanding from the beginning serves multiple purposes.

The more you understand how the menu structure works, the better you will be able to plan your site and basic layout. It will also help you target your theme searches for themes that have the capability to create the dropdown menus you require. Thus saving you time searching through the thousands of themes available.

What are the menu options?

There are 3 kinds of menu items we can create that are found in the menus section under the Appearance tab in the back office of your WordPress site.

  • Pages
  • Links
  • Categories

Pages will link you to your individual pages you have created for your site, links are for external URLs, while categories will link to the difference categories you have created for your posts. An important reason why you should always make sure your categories are well organised.

Any of the 3 options are available to used in your dropdown menu, and organizing it is as simple as dragging and dropping your menu items into place once you have added them to the your main menu structure.

Let's begin with Page Menus

How do you get your page title to show up in the menu list so you can add it to your menu?

I never had trouble with this before. I tried following DynamicDavid's suggestion to find the pages in categories, but since my blog post is about the categories, my blog post shows up, not the page I want.

Since the page title doesn't show up in the menu list, I can't add it. Please help if you can. Thank you

I'm not 100% clear on what you're trying to do. Here's a screen cap of my Wordpress where I am adding Pages to NEWS using the Add Page Menu.

These will show up in my News menu.

Does that help? I hope I'm not misunderstanding.

Pages are very useful as menu items. Posts will show up in your sidebar area unless you insert them into your menu.

Thanks Mick.

My blog roll is my Home page, and is my first Menu item; it shows up, and the blog title shows up in my sidebar, so no problem there.

The problem seems to be I have to wait a loooooong time for my website editing to take effect. After about half an hour the menu items were finally available on the left side and I could add them to the menu.

Everything I do in WA takes forever, and I have only very short windows of time. So I have to stop and come back later which really interrupts my flow. Glad I'm about finished with that particular website setup.

Thanks anyway, Mick and SirTristan.

Things are moving quickly once again. Mama said there'd be days like this, when nothing works. That day has passed.

Good work Rohan! If there's such a thing as 'menu dyslexia', I've got it, but your clear tutorial really helps!
