Before we Begin

Creating custom menus will likely become important for many online businesses.

Making navigation of your website simple is of highest importance for both user experience and search engine rankings. It is also important to know the proper way to structure your menus so they are displayed correctly.

I hope to simplify this process for anybody curious or stuck on creating one.

Table of Contents

  1. Creating Your Menu (This page)

  2. Custom Menu Structure

  3. Good Menu Structure

  4. Adding a Custom Menu Widget

  5. Multiple Custom Menu Widgets

So let's start with creating a custom menu

  • Under "Appearance" you will find and click "Menus"
  • Click "create a new menu". (I have this highlighted yellow)

Enter Menu Name

  • You can name your menu anything. (Only visible to you)
  • Click "Create Menu" in the blue box

- Important -

After creating menu you will see "Menu Settings"

  • Do Not Check "Auto add pages"
  • Unless you want this menu in your primary location, leave both empty.

(If Adding "Pages" or "Categories", insure you select "View All" as I highlighted yellow below.)

Your Custom menu is ready to be designed. Make sure you set it up correctly or it will not appear the way you desire.

Although it's simple. The smallest of adjustments can mean big changes. Especially in the next step with designing your "Menu Structure".

Could you please clarify and explain more about when making a Post?

So my questions are:

What URL do I manually insert into the field? and what text link do I also insert in the field?

Thanks

is there a way to make the homepage widgets only? Like maybe 3 columns of widgets. Could there be a theme that makes this easier?
Thanks.

Did you mean you want widgets that only appear on the homepage and not on the other pages of your site?
Reply
SalmanS Premium
No, I mean I want a homepage made up entirely of widgets. Is there a way to do that (without coding)? Thanks.
Reply
Juneyo Premium
I'm not sure but I think it's possible. All you have to do is create a column and paste the widget's code in the text box on your page. That's the only way I could think of.

Make sure to have contents and keywords in your homepage because that's what gets you rank on Google and not the widgets.

Hope this helps =)

Why would you like to do this?

trying to make a homepage that is like a dashboard of useful widgets in the niche, but also promote my books there...just thinking outside the box :)

Hey Man,
It is possible for sure, but you might need to buy a theme.
I have the premium version of songwriter and it is possible to add a page builder, where I can add as many widgets to a site like I want.

Hello moneymotivej (sounds Dutch) The top menu and your sidebar is a part of your theme and will follow all your posts and pages.

do you know how to fix the problem on my menu? http://dreamjob4dreamlife.com my menu is at the top corner in a box, but i want the titles to be visible in the front so that the categories can drop down from the pages
Reply
upsgirl Premium
I don't see a box. Your Pages are set for drop-down.
Now, use this...

I've had a look, looks good.... have you sorted it already?
Menu looks like it is displaying as your theme is set up to, and your drop downs are working.

ok so i attached an image of my site, you know how it drops down, how can i get them to appear horizontal next to my title "anti-jobs" because on the drop down page i put a category that is supposed to say "affiliate marketing" when i hover the mouse over it but if i do that or click it my category doesn't come up under that page, it only comes up on the side menu that says recent posts.
Reply
upsgirl Premium
It is setup as drop-down.
Your Page Titles are horizontal. They run from left to right.
You added one correctly.
Just follow the training I gave you to complete.

The image you sent is not how we see it.
Refresh your website. Publish.
Now, take a look!

when I follow your link, I see the menu displaying as you wish it to, it doesn't look like that little box in the picture you've attached.
Maybe try refreshing the page, see if it updates? Or log out then come back in because it looks like its behaving itself to me :)

Reply
upsgirl Premium
You need to Publish.
Now, Refresh. We should see the same. You are fine!
Reply
xxfvaldezxx Premium
i did publish it, i put a category named affiliate marketing under the income online page, can you see that?
Reply
upsgirl Premium
I saw that an hour ago.
Let me take another look.

This looks the same as it did an hour ago.
I am not sure what you're looking at but you haven't had any issues.
Your drop-down was there and is still there.

Damien, thanks a bunch. I have only one question. If I want to change the menu I just made by adding more pages, how would I do that?
Reply
qbjack01 Premium
Add a new menu. If your 1st menu was (for example) MENU 1, then, add a MENU 2 and attach any pages you want to that one.

*Looking at the first image as a reference*

Under "Edit Menu" tab - first option says "Select a Menu to Edit".

From the menu, click the name you chose for you menu and click "Select"

(Now you will see your menu again)

--Remember to choose "View All" when under "Pages"
--If you want too add Posts instead, select "Links"

You have to manually add posts in the "Links" section.

Good training Damien. The first question that I thought to ask though while reading through it was.... other than it perhaps drawing more attention to the information in the menus, is there any particular benefit to placing them there? Would they also be in the standard menu area above?

Just wondering, thanks.

If you wanted to display a further breakdown of important content on your website. Some themes may not support side menus. Iconic One for example only has one menu.
This would be the best way to creating the side menu you desire. (In my opinion)

Many people will have the main categories displayed in the top menu, but may also want to create a side menu different then the top menu.

Nice job Damien, I am happy I learned how to use my widgets...that one took me a while...why....so easy I made it difficult...Lol. :))

Thanks Kim.

This one can be tricky. Having to create menu under "Menus" and "Gadgets" to use them.

(Unless it's the default theme locations which would be located within "Menus")

I know their are similar instructions. but a few options aren't explained.

I believe some which may cause problems for people, Auto add pages for example and the "Locking" in position of the links.

Thanks for sharing your gratitude with us!
