NOTE: My bad I say 401 error in the video I meant to say 404 error.

Having the proper permalinks is very important for your websites on page SEO.

So in this short video I'll show you how to create the perfect keyword rich permalink. Including how to edit it to include a tagline and keeping your keyword rich permalink intact.

I believe in you

Why this wasn't mentioned in tutorial from Kyle and Carson? After I used low hanging keywords and add something else in title, now instead great words, basicly it is ruined...

If I change my posts names now, how long will it take for google.to recognise it as new link?
Reply
leoemery Premium
No your keywords are not ruined, no need to change anything. You can add words to the front or end of your keywords. This if you don't want to have a long tag line included in your permalink.

So, example, if my keyword was "Make Your Body Burst With Energy" and I added "Importance Of Vitamins" and my link looks like this mydomain.com/make-your-body-burst-with-energy-importance-of-vitamins/, should I change it or not? If someone who looks for Make Your Body Burst With Energy still will be shown my link in the result, no matter I have Importance Of Vitamins as last part?

It is really amazing that I found this little video just now. I spent yesterday perfecting a post with a low hanging fruit keyword and I believe it is my best written post yet, and I just got beautiful styled stock photos to use as featured images to which I have learned to add my post title and site url. But apparently I really blew it for getting indexed in Google with this post because I changed the permalink to a date only and left the post with no title because I did not want the title appearing twice when someone clicks on the post - once on the image is enough.

However, for the next time, because of your little video here, I know how to edit my permalink to be my title or keywords, then it will not matter if I delete the title from my post and have it on the image only. If my permalink has been edited, that will not change and the post will get indexed based on that permalink. Is that correct?

Again, thank you for this short video, because it answered a question that I have been trying to find the answer to since yesterday...amazing!!!

You're welcome and it's great to hear my video helped you out.

Yes your post/page will be indexed in the search engines according to the published (post/page) permalink

I edited the permalink by first drafting and then editing it to a shorter version. But I think now I have a problem I had published this article, but I thought I could have it published at a later date. (just two more weeks) I had planned to do some updating there and some more pages and posts. I was not even aware that any of my articles were published. Will I get that post back (now it is showing that "no articles were found." Is there something I should do? Now when I changed the publishing time, I had put it in Draft because of the Permalink directions. I should have written a PM.

Hi Leo, I started to view your blog posts as we discussed a little while ago seeing that your videos have been helpful so far, and I had no idea how permalinks work and what they were for.

I clicked on all of my pages and posts checking the URLs and the one for my 'Privacy Policy' page has 'sample-page' ?
I went to view the page in edit mode and that is what it shows!

It was one of my first pages that I made at the beginning in the lessons. No one is going to google 'sample-page' so...if I change it to Privacy Policy I don't think I will get that 404 error code since no one will ever google 'sample-page'?

This video was also very helpful! seeing that this page shows an error for some reason.

Thanks

I forgot to mention, I do have an URL for my first Review that has a tagline and know I can't change it.
Reply
PatsyC Premium
Idea, maybe I can change it then resubmit it by requesting a Fetch for it in Google Search Console
Reply
leoemery Premium
If I understand you have your privacy page but the title of the page is Smaple Page.

If that's so simply change the title from Sample Page to your Privacy Policy page, make sure to update the perma link as well. You can also make this page No Follow, No Index.

If you're using all in one seo, just scroll down the page below your editor and you'll see where you can do that. No one really reads these pages and there is no point having them indexed.

So it's no big deal making these updates.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I looked into it and realized the Privacy Policy page doesn't get indexed anyway, which now makes sense, and the permalink must be a default showing 'sample page'.

I learned a few other things about permalinks after I checked them out on my website and wrote a blog post on it to make other's aware in case they think as I did,

Learning something new everyday!

When I first started this confused the heck out of me. A much needed clarification.

It is one of the most important things we do when we write a post.

Working online is a challenge. So many things are confusing until we understand them, then they become routine.

I remember struggling over areas for hours then getting it. Once it's gotten it's seems so simple.

Nice Leo.

Thank you Leo. I have been trying to find an answer to this question.

So I can enter anything in the box as long as I change my permalink to short and sweet keywords before publishing?

What I enter into the box will show on my blog roll.

If that's not what I want to show in the search engine results page can I use the Title Tag and check the boxes Robots Meta NOODP and Robots Meta NOYDIR and have the title tag show up in the engines?

If it's best to use the keywords with a tag line in the box above the permalink let me know please.

This short video has cleared up a great deal for me. Thank you Leo.

If I changed my permalink after I published an article, is there a way to link my post back to its proper URL if there is a 404 error?
Reply

Hello there. I wish I could help but I still lack behind the technical understanding of permalink. Hope someone with a definite answer will provide you real soon.

Yes you can create a 301 permanent redirect. If you do not know how to code a 301, you can use a plugin called Simple 301 Redirects

Is this method better than using Google Webmasters Tool?
Reply
leoemery Premium
Yes, webmaster tools just tells you of the 404 and other errors, it's on your site you have to make the fix.

Is it a sin to add the extra to the title in the SEO title description? I'm willing to sacrifice the name of my website to fall off in order to have the full title show up in the search. That won't hurt, will it?
Reply
leoemery Premium
I assume you're talking about the title & description below the post using All in one SEO.

If so yep you can do that.

Hey Leo,

Just a quick question for you. Is it okay to change the actual title of a post as long as I dont change the permalink itself?

For instance....

I originally created the post 'lose belly fat' with the mathcning permalink, but now I want to go back and spice up the title a little bit by adding words after it.

Would that be okay?
Reply
leoemery Premium
Yep you can do that.

I think I am guilty of changing the permalink after I have published. I will be more careful in future and check before publishing. Thanks a lot Leo.
Reply
leoemery Premium
Yeah you want to make sure you try not to do that any more, it's not that good for your overall ranking and SEO.

If you do have to change your permalink, make sure you create a 301 redirect from the old link to the new link.

This way you avoid 404 cannot find page errors. And if you know the old permalinks that you changed it's a good idea to fix those with 301 redirects.

There are plugins that can make life easy for you to create a 301 redirect.
Reply
anderscj Premium
Thanks Leo. I don't remember the permalinks I changed unfortunately. It was a month or so ago. Luckily, in some way, I am not getting traffic to my site. I am certainly not going to publish until I am ok with the title and permalink. Cheers. Christine.

Hi Leo, as usual I learned something from you. I didn't know about google focusing more on the first 3-5 words in the permalink. Also, you mentioned 401's. Is an easy way to check on them, just to go through your posts (if you only have a few) and open them within your WP dashboard (and view them) to see if you have any? Or just to view them online within signing into WP? Thank you.
Reply
leoemery Premium
First off my bad I meant to say 404 error in the video not 401.

Matt Cutts from Google has mentioned this a few times.

The best way is to copy the permalink and then open your browser in the incognito mode and then place the URL into the browser and see if the link generates a 404.

If it does you need to create a permeate 301 redirect from this link to a new link.

The reason you want to do this in the incognito mode is so your not seeing a cached page.
