In this short video I show you how you can create a page which holds specific posts within a specific category. And then have a link within your menu to go to this page.

Enjoy

This is terrific! I want to do some DIY posts and was trying to figure out how to post them all together. Turns out I don't need to do that...just have to add the category DIY to each of them and add a DIY page to my menu. This is perfect...don't know why I didn't think of it! Thanks so much!

So I thought I'd finally figured this out...but it still isn't the way I want it. Here is my site:

http://www.weightdefeated.com

Under the weight loss supplements category, I want the posts titled "What is the best natural weight loss supplement for burning belly fat" and "The Best Natural Weight loss supplements". Under the natural weight loss, fast category, I want the posts titled "26 Great Tips for Natural Weight Loss, Fast" and "25 Best Rated Weight Loss Apps: They Really Work". I have them set up as a drop down correctly. If I click on the weight loss supplements category at the top of the page, only the posts I want to show are showing on the page. However, when I click on the natural weight loss, fast category, all of my posts are showing. I went into my back office, and went to my posts. It is only showing 2 of them under that category, so why are they all showing when I click on it?? How do I fix it??
Reply
terryg247 Premium
right now it is linking to articles and not to categories

Parent Category - Is your main Category
Subparent Category - Is the categories you want listed underneath it
Reply
amandatorres Premium
I want that category to link to articles I wrote, just not all of them.
Reply
terryg247 Premium
k, by linking separate pages under the parent category should do the same thing
Reply
amandatorres Premium
How do I do that?
Reply
amandatorres Premium
That only tells me how to create a drop down menu. That's not what I'm trying to do. I already have my drop down in place with the articles I want. But if I click on the category, the page that comes up shows all my posts. That is the problem.

Yes! Finally! So in doing this, I can delete the other pages and just use the category page for direct navigation correct? Because it seems you can't actually link a post to a regular page. Or can you?
Reply
JVanAndel Premium
The only way I see creating a post to a regular page is by actually writing the post as you create the page. But anything you do from SiteContent just goes straight to an article on your front page.
Reply
leoemery Premium
Pages and post are completely different and - this "page" is created because it's the place that the related posts that you place in that particular category are located.

It's not like a page you create, as I said this "page" is only created because you created the category so the posts can be on it.
Reply
JVanAndel Premium
I see, but what is the need for a "page" if you can only have one piece of content, as compared to having a "category page" where you can post as much as you want? Or is the point of a "page" so that you DON'T post too many articles, thus confusing the reader?
Reply
leoemery Premium
A Category "page" is just a nice neat way of organising related posts that's all.

Pages you create are for static pages such as policies, disclaimers, about me, pillar page for a review and such.

Oh and you can never post to many articles
Reply
JVanAndel Premium
Ohhhh OK I get it now. And so if I use site content to publish my articles, I can just categorize them and set the category page as a subpage if I want it to be posted in relevance to the main page.

Great video.
I have a question about something I have seen elsewhere and can't seem to find again.

Basically, what I want is to have something in the main menu that can not be clicked on, but is there only as a placeholder for a drop-down menu.

For example, in my site's top menu, I will have pages A, B, C, D.
Now, let's say that clicking on B, C, or D will take you to page B, C, or D as appropriate, but under A, I want there to be a drop-down menu with E, F, G. Clicking on those will bring you to E, F, or G, but clicking on A should have no effect; it goes nowhere.

I have seen this in another video, but can't find it anymore and don't remember how to do it. As it stands now with the way I have it set up, clicking on A bring you to a blank page marked Category: A.

I hope that you understand what I am trying to convey. Any ideas on how to do this?
Reply
leoemery Premium
I think I understand - if you want a tab in your menu not to be non clickable (dead link) here's how,

Go to your dashboard, click Appearance, click Menus - now in the sidebar click on Custom link to open the dropdown.

Where you would place your tab link (url) place a hashtag # - now below that (link text) name your tab. Now click Add to Menu and then click Save Menu.

You now have a dead tab link and you can do what you want with it.
Reply
CraigW315 Premium
Thank you! Yes, that was it. I couldn't remember what had to be entered as the URL... I tried leaving it blank, but we can't do that, so I knew there had to be something to punch in, but had no idea what it was.

Thanks a lot!

Posts can only go to selected categories that you have created. Pages cannot be directed to a category. You would need to create a separate link in your menu to have it go to a specific page.

FYI
I put my question below to Nathaniall and this was his reply

It's not true that Google doesn't rank pages if they are in a dropdown menu - not at all! Google will rank each page based on its own merits, and it doesn't matter if that page is in a menu, sidebar, or not listed anywhere (as long as you published the page normally).

Take from that what you will.

Regards

Dan

Sorry, I meant to add to my original reply, late but here it is.

John mueller says they may get discounted, but from what I have seen the page itself does get ranked (indexed) - but not the tab, many people use keywords within tabs.

I have tabs and I have pages that are ranked. When you site gets crawled the page gets crawled. And if you are using Googles fetch you are fetching the page title.

And if you've done your keyword research your page will be appropriately ranked.

Just reading the conversation below and I'd appreciate it if you could clarify a point for me.
I don't have any posts on my site just pages kept in different categories within drop down tabs in the main menu, (I find this a fairly orderly and easily navigable way of keeping my content.)
here's a link to my site so you can see what I mean.
http://acousticguitarresource.com/
Does this mean that non of my work is being ranked by google?
I'd appreciate any advice.
Thanks

Hey Leo,

Thanks for sharing this...answered my question to a "T" and helped me solve my issue.

Question though, do "Category Tabs" rank differently or get rated any differently than "Pages Tabs" or is it all the same in accordance with Google?

All The Best,
Jeremy David Wilson
Reply
leoemery Premium
John Mueller of Google says: "tabs" may be "discounted" since Google knows you are hiding it from users. Google may not rank the page for the content within those sections because Google knows users do not see the content by default.
Reply
WilsonJeremy Premium
Thank you Leo. And what is their definition of tabs?
Reply
leoemery Premium
Tabs are the dropdown tabs in your dropdown menu, the ones not visable
Reply
WilsonJeremy Premium
That's what I figured, so thanks for clarifying Leo! :-)
Reply
WilsonJeremy Premium
One more question...what if the tabs are "hover-visible"....does Google still "discount" them the same as "non-hover-visible" tabs?

Wilson
Reply
leoemery Premium
Yep those would still be discounted - they need to be visable without hovering

Ok, great info...thank you! :-)

Ok, you make the post to appear in the category that you want, but how to delete it then from your "home page" to not have it duplicated in 2 places?
Reply
leoemery Premium
It's not duplicate, it's a post so it will appear on your blogroll, the post listed under the category is the same post you see on your home page, there is only one link - nothing is duplicated
Reply
Evacapri Premium
is there anyway to not have the post appear in the blog roll? On a certain theme I was helping a friend with their posts appear as full pages on their homepage and I don't see an option to change that. It takes up so much space and doesn't look very appealing. Any advice?
Reply
leoemery Premium
All posts will automatically appear in the blog roll, that's teh way wordpress is designed. How it appears is set by how the theme is set to show things. Some show the full post while others show a snippet with a read more link.

If there is no option to change the view, it can always be done in the CSS Style sheet (code)

What theme is your friend using?

Once replaced with a new one I want the others to go to posts under the pages I have. How??? I have put the categories in the widget. Site is fantasy-sci-fi-vision.com.
Reply
leoemery Premium
If you just want the latest post on your home page you need to change the number of posts that appear on your homepage.

To do that go to Settings in your dashboard and then click on Reading and there you will see Blog Pages Show At Most - change that to 1 and then save.

Your posts cannot go under any pages, pages and post are two separate things, one cannot go under the other.

However you can place your posts under any of the categories you have created

I posted a comment to my Discussion area to kind of start the ball rolling, but what I'm not understanding his how to get a Blog thread going using this medium. I wanted the comment to be a "Post" in that Discussion group page, but I still don't get it. Can you elaborate a bit or email me directly? I think the discussion area is where the most useful "Content" is actually going to come from. Thank you.
Reply
leoemery Premium
This training video has nothing to do with the comments on any post or how they are generated.

Creating a category page is simply a way of highlighting a group of posts within a category. Such as a Products Review category page like I mentioned in the video.

People leaving comments on any of your posts on your website depends on the quality of the content and the level of engagement. Not the category they are in.

Thanks for this, Leo. Quick question just to make sure I'm understanding something I had asked WA previously. If I want to change the Menu on my site (it's over a year old) can I create new categories, assign each post to them, and then make a new menu? I want to simplify the look. Will I then have to update my sitemap or will it be done automatically? Thanks in advance.
Reply
leoemery Premium
Yes you can create new categories and assign posts to each. And then create your new menu.

As for your sitemap it depends on what you are using for your site map generator. Most from what I understand do update automatically.

For example I use the Google XML Sitemaps plugin - it automatically updates the sitemap when I make changes and then notifies Google and Bing.
