The most obvious thing most people see is that you're traveling and getting paid to do so while staying in top accommodations. They don't realize that starting a travel blog comes with many struggles.

What you need to know before you become a travel blogger:

  • The niche is saturated. Almost everyone wants to be a travel blogger, thinking it's all rainbows and sunshine – that by having a travel blog (and a few followers), they can get complimentary stays at 5-star hotels. It's not as easy as it sounds. Many travel bloggers built their empires before they got any special perks (or compensation).
  • You're usually behind your computer. It's like having your magazine and being the editor, photographer, writer, and stylish all simultaneously. Now some bloggers have teams, but in the beginning, it will just be you. Taking and editing photos and videos, writing up posts, SEO, and social media scheduling all require a fair amount of time spent in front of the computer.
  • Getting stuck. You get paid for content, and to be a successful travel blogger, you must follow deadlines just like any other job. The challenge of creating great content while experiencing Everything that each place offers isn't easy, especially when you're pressed for time.
  • The income is not guaranteed. The income depends on each new project as a freelancer. You'll also have to consider travel blogging as an expense at first. In the end, how will you start writing about places you haven't been? The travel that will serve as the subject for your content requires you to invest some money.
  • As a solo travel blogger, going from place to place on your own can be lonely. Since you aren't in a position for too long, you constantly make and break connections and friendships.
  • You don't know what's going to happen next. It may seem exciting at first to become a travel blogger, but you have to plan for what's next constantly. When traveling loses excitement, or you run out of funds, you'll need to plan accordingly.

These truths may not apply to you if you want to know how to start a travel blog for the purpose of sharing your experiences. More than building a brand to appeal to sponsors, your ambitions and expectations will be centered around achieving self-fulfillment (and perhaps sharing your adventures with friends and family).

WOW Jannette, thank you for the breakdown! I pondered the thought of a 'Travel Blog' once or twice. With the information you have provided here, I can seriously consider my options.

My preference would be for a personal expression type blog. Sharing my experiences, knowledge, and creativity.

Explaining the processes and considerations are a big help too. There are some within WA that already have the experience to write tons of content; moreover, you have provided a path to travel.

Appreciate the info,
Canty

Very interesting. I teach ESL in Vietnam and that is my niche, however I am expanding a bit to what people should see while in Vietnam. So this is helpful.
Thanks
Stephen
