Introduction – why this training?

I've recently been writing Site Comments and spotted a few errors on some sites, such as words which sound the same but are spelled differently (technically called homophones). It's not so much that they twist the meaning of the message (although that can happen) but they jar which pulls the reader out of their involvement with the post.

I'd also venture to suggest that it can take the edge off the perceived authority of the site, even if subconsciously.

The expert view

We are programmed to expect professionals and experts to communicate in a professional manner. If your doctor said: "Take them there tablets when what it says and good luck to you," your opinion of their expertise as a medical practitioner might take a slight hit.

Even if you are writing on hobby topics, you still want to be regarded as an authority.

I know that for many members here, English is not their first language and I'm guessing that not everyone majored in English at College – I certainly didn't! – so this is presented simply in the hope that it might help one or two people who may be confused about the correct way to use certain words, and to give their writing a more professional appearance and their blog a touch more authority.

Communication is key

The purpose of language is to communicate and the purpose of your blog is to communicate your message, so the more accurate your language, the better it will do its job.

The occasional spelling mistake or grammar error is not highly significant. However, if you want to present a professional appearance your language should be as accurate as possible.

By 'accurate' I don't mean written like an essay or a thesis. I mean clear, easy to read and understand, and unambiguous.

Keep your style

You don't have to change your writing style.

I have a colloquial style. I start sentences – even paragraphs! - with prepositions and conjunctions. I use dashes, exclamation marks and smileys all over the place. By any stretch of the imagination, it's nor 'formal' writing. My aim is to write so my message is clear, and I try to do it in an informal and entertaining way.

Whether I succeed here, I'll leave you to decide 😂

If you're still with me, that was a massive instruction to only a handful of common errors I want to talk about.

Let's get started.

Thank YOU for this helpful tutorial Ian!

Leaving comments on a post riddled with errors is not what I want to be doing either... so, I truly hope a LOT of members take heed of your advice.

Thank you, Trish.

You've obviously seen some of the sights (Puns R Us) I've seen :-)

I am full of admiration for the people for whom English is not their first language. It's mine and I still struggle with it! But many errors are made by native English speakers and it would take only a little effort to learn how to avoid the most obvious ones.

I sea what you are talking about! Oh correction: I see what you are talking about!
All jokes aside...
I commend you for this Post Yan!
Our communication is key to how we are perceived by others.
When Bogging, we incorporate our personal experiences, data, etc. Each backed by the information we have attained by our source(S).
Okay, so this includes our research.
Let us include the "homophones" in that research. It will only improve our writing style, not hurt it.
It just makes sense to do it that way!
I will be more aware of my word choices as I continue on my Blogging journey!! :)

Hi Corren. Thank you for your comments.

Yes, communication is key and the correct use of language - or as near as we can get - help us put across our message more clearly, accurately and professionally.

I think English lessons should be included here in WA. Or you will continue teaching us.

Ha! Ha! Thank you. I think learning affiliate marketing is enough :-)

There are probably sites which teach English, and far better than I could.

It's when certain words or phrases jump out at you as being wrong that readers might question the authority of the site. I was simply trying to highligght some common mistakes and explain how to avoid them.

I think the community of WA is affected by the texting style of millennials so they are hoping it is understandable. LOL

I got it wrong!
It says: I can do text speak - you just leave out the consonants

Of coure, you leave out the vowels :-)

In 20 years time the younger generation won't know what a vowel is :-)

OED RIP

Maybe that is nearer to Greek language with missing vowels.

Good points well made!
My own particular bugbears are "potato's" or even" potatoe's", and "could of" etc!! And also "different to" instead of "different from"! :)

Ha! Ha!

Thanks, Chrissie. Yes, there are loads of examples.

Maybe we should start a group called Pedants R Us? :-)
