What is a niche?

A niche is simple, it is an audience. An audience looks for stuff online, for example, what are some of the last searches you did in Google. These are ALL niches.

In this video I am going to help you UNDERSTAND what a niche is, how to come up with niches that you are interested in, how to choose a niche...and if you can't come up with your own niche, then I give you a "plan of attack" for getting your business up and running in a pre-selected niche.

Here is what you are going to be doing within this tutorial:

  • Understand what a niche is
  • Finding your very own niche
  • Choosing your initial direction
  • Finding and search for affiliate programs
  • Using Answers.com to uncover niches
  • Understanding Affiliate Bootcamp

A couple of resources I leveraged within this training that you can use for your niche research. These include:

  • Amazon.com
  • Answers.com
  • Google.com
  • Magazines.com

If you have any questions about niches or what direction to go, please let me know and I will be more than happy to help you out.

I'm seriously considering promoting WA.
There are Multiple MILLIONS of people out there, wishing that they had a means to be able to attain their dreams, without working for a low paying wage, and never reaching the point where they become homeowners, and can send their future family to college. I'm IN!!

BILLIONS of people, in fact 3.75 billion people online all of whom would be interested in building a business online (in a niche of their choice) if they new what they were doing or where to start. Hint: WA.

Head in a direction that is most interesting to you though, Bootcamp can be a viable direction but we always suggest that your starting point should be your passion/interest.

Hello, I just going through to plan a niche as Pets supplies, for dogs, cats, fish and aquarium, apart that I love pets, and I see most of people around the world having a pet. In my niche would be included as food and care, accessories, dog's training. I think it would be a good niche for starting. Please advice me.

I would narrow this down. Pets as a niche is far too broad, even dog training or dog toys, etc...those are massive niches. You are definitely thinking in the right direction here though.

That sounds great. I'm hoping someone does something about Jack Russell Terriers.

Yes, I think about training and behaviour, just because I had a case with my aunt's dog, that her dog was aggressive, and we did not know how to resolve this, this way I want to put focus on that.

hmm might have to rethink about my niche than that I started 3+ months ago. I actually haven't really figured what niche it should be in but so far it is about everything you need to know about good cat care. Is that too broad of a niche too?

Identifying your niche is like the management principle "KISS"
Keep It Simple Stupid - but if you don't know what is meant by a Niche - that is the complicating part - now with this training session, it is outlined as to what is meant by "Niche" and it seems to be easy -

A niche is a hobby, an interest, a passion, something that people do, something that you want to learn.

It could be anything, there are literally millions of niches.

My mind is bursting with ideas for niches. I would imagine some niches are more lucrative than others. Seems to me making money online niches might be the best place to start. Promoting WA is like having the niche decision being made for me and if I am successful, then I can try niches that aren't so tired and true.

Great newbie course! I just had a couple of questions:

1. How many products should you base your website around? In most of my interests, I usually only ever end up using 1 or 2 products. Can I make a full-time income by just promoting one product (for example promoting just one Dating website that I have used myself and approve of)
2. If I chose a competitive niche like video games/movies, won't that make it very difficult for me to get my website to get traction, seeing that there's just so many people doing this?

Thanks!

Initially I was at a serious block regarding this niche business. After Kyle explained that it is just an audience...more niche ideas came. Once I get the niche I've chosen to start off with up and running and doing business I can act on other niche ideas that I have in mind.

Good video, but not yet to make a website as two I get it I guess as ordinary affiliate. I do want definately think on getting Amazon as the video teaches I can add my wealthy affilliate link, Jax link , and one more traffic link. An overview of knowledge is there, but when making a website the above things get clarified I hope. This is a wonderful video as I like to promote WA too. Thanks to the folks , Shahid Mohammed

Amazon could definitely be part of your website as well as MANY other affiliate programs. What you promote will depend on the niche that you choose, so I wouldn't get ahead of yourself here...and any niche you will be able to promote MANY products/services within. ;)

Great video. I really liked to ideas: a) do not think too much about your niche as it won't be the last one; b) if you still can't decide which niche to choose go to affiliate bootcamp.
So, I decided to go to affiliate bootcamp - that would be my first niche. It's the best choice for me as I will study and practice affiliate marketing for 6 months at least anyway.
And I am more than sure that along the way I will find my second, third and so forth niches.
Thanks for the great video and advices - are really helpful to me.
Now I am ready to upgrade to Premium :)

You can have related sub niches in your website, as long as they're all connected to each other and make sense. Over time as you can probably imagine this tends to happen naturally. You write content over time and you don't want it all to be the same, so you start branching out. Looks like you have a pretty good scaled out idea of what your website can be. I think that makes it a good one stop shop. Don't overwhelm yourself though, you don't have to tackle them all at once, start in one area and naturally progress to others and your website will grow with you.

Hi Carmen. Things can be a bit overwhelming at first! I'd suggest going through the certification courses, at whatever pace is comfortable for you. It's kind of a long-term process, and the lessons will definitely soak in, given time and patience. A step-at-a-time, and do the tasks given with each lesson. Write some blogs, when you are ready, and read the blogs of others. It will all get easier over time!-Rick :)

I am about to finalize a niche. But I have a question, there are some affiliate programs which are available in my country only. Or rather I would say that this particular program is most popular in my country.
Now the question is , when I will go about promoting, should I host 2 separate websites ?

that is 1 for my country promoting from that one affiliate program
and 2nd for global market involving several global affiliate programs like amazon ?

Or I should go about putting multiple affiliate links of same product from different programs ?

It's best to use the global one if your country is also included. I registered with Amazon UK affiliate program that excludes other countries.

I have now registered with the Amazon international one to broaden my customer base. I use links or banners from both affiliate programs on the same website but to suit a particular product.

Hopefully this does answer your question. Please feel free to ask if it's not clear.

i am wondering about the same thing.also is it a good idea to have multiples websites in different languages?
Reply
Kyle Premium
I would suggest you create your website focusing on just ONE language. When you try to translate your content (translators do a horrible job of this as they are far too literal), you take away from the overall site quality.

When you create an "additional" website, you create double the work for yourself without knowing if the campaign is going to be successful or not.

Both of these will lead to much more work and a lot less focus. Focus on one language or the other when starting out Carmen, once you are successful with one you could diversify down the road and build out a second website and create a translated version of your website for an additional revenue stream.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks.

I can understand wanting to promote multiple niches. It is something I would like to do myself someday, however, I have taken the advice of others who are doing this and they recommend starting with one, getting comfortable with the process and adding others. That way you don't get overwhelmed and you can have a firm grasp on the process before you stretch yourself too thin.

I'm seeking feedback. I want to focus on reaching women over 50. Some of the ideas I have for affiliate programs are Zen, stress-relief, anxiety relief, energy healing, sound healing, aromatherapy. I want to create content around these and of course promote products. But I also want to spin-off into creating a podcast, e-books and online courses around positive mindset, achieving dreams, finding purpose, setting boundaries, rebuilding your life after loss or major changes...I'm using my own story as a jumping off point as I prepare to travel across the U.S. in my RV. I'm 55.
Is my niche too broad? I appreciate your suggestions.
Reply
NancyOsier Premium
It is too broad and I know it. That's my problem. My thinking is that women who have anxiety and stress are often feeling trapped or unfulfilled in their jobs, relationships, etc...They need "stress relief" but really need to re-work their lives. I know I'm trying to do too much within one niche. I want to have a podcast with tips for women to take charge of their lives through managing finances, speaking their truth, setting boundaries, identifying their passions, getting healthier and stronger. But I don't know where to begin, which shows me that my niche is way too broad.
Help?!

Zen, stress relief, anxiety relief, energy healing, aromatherapy, etc.

Those are all different niches and you will want to choose just one. There can be some cross over between them as you build out your niche and business, but I would focus your attention to just one when starting.

Your niche ideas are definitely viable directions for your niche. You need to choose one when starting out, what are you most passionate about? These are all pretty broad niches so you will want to narrow it down.

When deciding on a niche and trying to narrow down to a more specific niche, I recommend you ask yourself the following question:

I want to help people that ______________.

Fill in the blank and you are going to be much closer to a specific audience. After you do this and if you want to run any further ideas by me, let me know and I will give you a hand. :)

I'm thinking of creating gaming content with a deeper, informative style of play focusing on helping others become better at multiplayer through map breakdowns, thinking critically, useful products you can buy (joystick extensions, GamerGrip, ect), and training the way your eyes track screen movements.

Is this a specific enough niche? Gaming has proven a mainstay since the late 90s, Microsoft + Sony make billions of dollars a year from their console systems a year; should I still be worried about investing in a market that may go more Virtual Reality in the future, or is it a safe bet?

That sounds like really an awesome niche. I used to work at the school that teaches gaming and anime design, and students get hired left and right, so I am sure it is a pretty hot field.

The video was really helpful in taking away the worry of choosing the right niche. Would clothing for tall women be too broad and I would need to narrow it down like to trousers for tall women? If I chose to follow the WA bootcamp then upgraded to premium, would I be able to go back to the lessons to create my niche websites?

Yeah, you could narrow it down a bit. Tall women clothing, that could be the premise of your niche. But when you start building it out, you might want to first focus on a particular category of that broader niche.

And yeah, you can go to ANY of the training at any time. When you go premium, you are going to keep all of your existing activity, progress, websites, etc...you simply get A LOT more within Premium.

You are automatically a WA affiliate as soon as you've joined. You will find all details, links, banners under the airplane button at the top. Share any of the links with a friend and when they visit here a cookie will be planted on his computer with your reference on it. If it remains there, it will be valid I believe for 1 year, should the guy return to and joins, you will get the credit. Now how's that!

I watched the video and was really excited about how limitless the niche ideas can be, I had to pause because I saw how it could be overwhelming to get caught up in so many different ideas. I am currently a beekeeper and have a passion for it, I have been doing it for the past 3 years and have even gone as far as making our own skincare products. I guess it is intimidating to go as far as making a website about it because of uncertainty of which direction to go. Skin care or bee equipment and supplies? any thoughts would help give clarity.
Reply
ericcantu Premium
There could be arguments made for both. I can see skin care products being a pretty solid niche, especially natural skin care products. With the endless numbers of skin care products out there you'd be able to have infinite posts where you review a particular popular skin care product and then show how yours is an even better alternative, or even a great compliment to the one you're reviewing. As you'll see through the training, when you develop a review like this you are able to take the person who's researching one product and almost intercept them as you show them a better alternative. Or you may show how yours is a great compliment to an already good product and they could buy it as a companion product.

I'm no expert with beekeeping, so I'm not sure how many products or equipment you could leverage with that niche, but you'd be the expert on that. I'd imagine it would have much less competition than skin care products which is a good thing as well.

I'd pick the one you feel most comfortable with and the one you feel you'd be able to market better to start off and then you can always create a second site in the future for the other one. If you have a product you've developed yourself, personally I'd want to market that to the public by reviewing other popular skin care products and showing just how well yours compares.
Reply
Iholding01 Premium
I really appreciate the input about this topic I hope that eventually I can make my products be a majority for promoting. I read the article about a niche being a group of people, and almost feel like I need to go in the direction of more widely known things like electronics, fashion, and cars, maybe i am putting the cart in front of the horse because I'm just under financial stress to make debt disappear so fast. I guess the impression give is the more widely known and more expensive the greater the yield. I really have so much to learn. I think that's why my excitement peaks at the thought of having people to help along the way. Just getting my thought in the open.

then from that you have the other sire which is al the great products from bees including skincare stuff

As you move forward and as you create success within ONE niche, it is natural to diversify into many others over time.

After watching the video, I realized my first concept was too broad. I was just going to do a website about what I enjoy shopping for online.

Now I realize I should think about what I most enjoy shopping for online, and a lot of it is "window shopping". Wishful thinking, and looking at beautiful pictures.

I'm mostly drawn to gemstone jewelry for women. A lot of people think...oh yea...a diamond in a gold or platinum setting. And then they stop. But there is a whole world of awesome gemstones, different qualities of cuts, classes, settings, and...what I find interesting...the metaphysical qualities of gemstones and the range of affordability.

There are tons of "fine jewelry" shops, many of them with "classic yet uninspired" designs, and probably lots of affiliate opps. There are also lots of metaphysical gemstone shops, individually handcrafted and bulk produced gemstone jewelry at various rates and prices.

I believe there is a need for a website that will help someone shopping for women's gemstone jewelry to know the vast range of what's available, as well as the standard high quality diamond ring in a classic setting.

I would also dearly love to blog about other things because even though I have the most experience with children, there is so much more to me that I really have never gotten to (and really want to) express about myself. Also, reach out to product creators in your niche whose products you'd like to promote. They may have an affiliate program for their products.

Another option would be to buy products wholesale and pack and ship them yourself. A

nother way to monetize your blog would be to offer your own coaching / skype sessions etc...

This is probably my most important question right now - should my domain name be what my niche is? or can I broaden it out a bit?. I'm considering Hair extensions, (for a targeted group of women). I don't want to have to buy multiple domain names, even though my Host company says... my domains are unlimited. (they might be sub-domains)

Yes your domain name needs to pertain to your niche, but, you can also broaden it out. Just make sure when broadening it out that is still pertains to your niche. Then, u won't have to have another domain name. It can be a title included in any of your Posts or Pages.

A little overwhelmed. Trying not to overthink this, but I have no clue what I would want to do for a niche! Any ideas? If I were to do something I am passionate about I have 3 ways I could go. This first is I love to draw and I love art, second anything for cancer awareness, and third anything having to do with my children. I'm just not sure how to turn one into a niche or narrow it down to something sensible.
Reply
CarolDutsch1 Premium
I think the niche cancer would be the most interesting and helpful niche because people die from cancer everyday. With research u can help many others such as the techniques involved in saving lives with helpful tips to prevent cancer. This niche will save lives now and forever. U can also offer great tips concerning art. I always wanted to know how to draw. Also, art is a valuabe subject because one can sale their art.

Find a connection from your passion of art or cancer awareness to something you can hook your reader into buying

Thank you for the advice! I wish I was good enough to sell :)...I may need some refresher classes before I attempt that... I will be uploading some of my drawings in my profile soon. Right now I draw for my kids and anyone that requests something. I would love to do something in the cancer area due to the fact that I lost my father to cancer about 4 years ago. I feel that this would be something I could do to honor his memory.

I think it is a very worthy kind of niche, although I am not sure how you would monetize it. Do the research, perhaps there are therapies, holistic treatments, medications, etc., that you could get affiliations with, to market their products/services on your site?

You wouldn't lead with selling stuff, of course. With a niche like that you would first and foremost, and MOSTLY want to be providing free understanding, help and assistance, and then gain their trust in you, to lead them to means with which to cope and heal.

I think it is wonderful. When you talk about things from a personal experience stand point you talk to their heart. You can say it in a way a person who read up on the subject and became interested could never say it. My site is hopeforalzheimer.com and it is given from a personal experience standpoint.

The root cause is the first thing to be found out for anyone coping with this problem. So finding and referring to a program / therapy helping to solve this in combination with products which support this treatment will be the way to go. Like this you are honest in helping and gaining trust to buy those products from you. But it is a difficult subject, I believe your are doing good in trying helping others, people like you are needed.

I wish you all the success you need and I hope you will find your way in reaching those in need, they will thank you for it.

Good Luck!

Hi Nelsonrosa77,

Is that web-name not a bit too long? That would be too long even for me to keep in mind.....

I learned that web-names should be short and easy to keep in mind, finding those is a bit more problematic as many good names are taken already, however it is not impossible.

A good way can be to combine 2 languages and use from those languages 2 words and put them together to form your website name.

Said that, cheers to all! :)))

This was the part I understood the best. I have an idea for diet pills, vitamins, food supplement and maybe muscle drinks. What do you think? Afterward, I would like advertisers to subscribe to my website? I know I'll need a lot of traffic by then, so I'll blog about food, vegetables and fruits, and the nutritional value they have to generate that.

My other idea for a niche is a blog for people who like to talk a lot about nothing and I blog about a subject to get things started with that. What do you think?
Reply
Kyle Premium
Yeah, diet supplements could be a direction you head. That is a huge niche, so you could start off with something like diet pills and then diversify from there.

And of course, there are many different things that you could discuss within this niche as you build it out.

Hello,

I have watched the video and understand what a niche is.Thanks! However, I do not understand how a website on, for example, swimsuits for baby girls can sustain itself. My understanding is that we all create a blog website about something that we like/are passionate about and write blog posts. How much is there to write about baby swimsuits? I doubt that a website with one blog post on baby swimsuits can make you money.

Please tell me if I have got it all wrong as I really want to do this but at the moment I'm disheartened.

Many thanks
Reply

You don't need to write about baby swimsuits all the time. Write something that mothers would like to know that can be beneficial to their babies. Like never leave your child unattended near water for a split second. Had it been a split second later for me I would have lost mine. And lots more subjects of interest. And of course, you ads for the babies close at hand on your blog.

Hi there Agatha;
As an example:
Baby swimsuits
...Water safety tips
...Best safe color for a baby swimsuit
...Shopping for baby swimsuits
...When taking baby to swin dont forget skin protection
...Safety and preventing accidents
...who is in charge and looking at the kids
...do's and don'ts around public pools
...At the beach\
...In the yard ..basic safety tips
...Hotel pools
...Should you read a book while watching baby swim?

These are some page titles you can write on. The idea is to
1.. Help young mothers to LEARN about this subject
2. Do not think money just now..
3. CONCENTRATE on being the greatest educator and specialist in your chosen site main subject
The rest will follow in due time.

Hi again Agatha;
As you can see it will be very easy to monetize all of these pages in the future. To do this you MUST educate and become THE expert on the matter. Education and giving FREE information to HELP is the FIRST key to success here.
Learn about your page's subjects, research and write about the subjects ( no copy and paste here..you would be discovered in a second) be yourself..write like you were talking with another mother over lunch.
Your site will grow over time, more and more people will visit your site and eventually you will GAIN RESPECT for your ideas and advice ..THEN you will see results coming in..Slowly at first and increasing over time.
Hope all this helps you.

Hi Desiree,

When first starting out, it's best to focus on a specific sector of a niche.

Once you start to expand out and are looking to grow you could include more topics.

What niche were you considering getting involved with? I could give you my thoughts on this and help you narrow it down to a specific audience.

I hope this helps and if you have any further questions please let me know.

very interesting video. I always wondered how I can find my niche. The reason why I wasn't able to narrow down it's because my interests vary as well. There isn't really something I'm focused on, instead today it could be a product or service but another day might be another. Maybe I'm weird, but I need to know what I want from my life. I don't feel passionate in any particular field.
Reply
Kyle Premium
Of course, we all have lots of different interests...you just need to choose your starting point.

PS. You don't need to be passionate per se, you can inject passion into anything that you do.

After finishing this video, this really helped me understand what niches are. As I was thinking of what I could promote, I realized that everything that I thought of using was too broad. For example, i am interested in basketball and just like in the example in the video, if I type just basketball, way too many things are going to pop up. So decided on a niche to start of with is gonna require a bit of thought here. I am definitely enjoying the education i am getting so far

If you like basketball then you could always narrow your niche down to either a specific team or player. Then you can narrow it down even further to promoting jerseys, caps, collectibles, or other items that are associated with that team or player.

My niche is 'music' and now i'm wondering whether that is too general, I wasn't at first. But I can't seem to find keywords with HIGH traffic and LOW completion.

Generally, would it be too difficult to have a niche like mine, and wouldn't I have to pay licensing and such to actually PUT music on there? Because that could and would be long, complicated, and expensive.

Do you think it would be the same for movie or tv show sites?

Do you think I should just promote wealthy affiliate itself and just start all over?

Any specific genres you prefer? Could maybe focus on movie and/or TV soundtracks. You could put youtube links to the songs. I know they have a lot of lyric videos and music video links that you can put up that shouldn't give any trouble.

I want to focus on my interests as far as when I'm starting my niches. One of them is very general in my opinion is starting a temp service that works in several different industries without focusing on any one in particular. Is something that I wanted to do for years and tried in one industry before but I abandoned it after making good money doing it so I regret that. How can I apply my experiences and ambition to this lesson?

As you know, the way that WA is teaching you to make money is through Affiliate Marketing. It is fine to follow your passion but is there a way to make money from it?

Google Affiliate Marketing Temp Service and see what you get.

Also, what could you sell related to your Niche?

In my opinion, the temp services could be both a great online business and a great a great Affiliate marketing niche in my opinion.

From the affiliate marketing aspect, a temp service site could provide information on hiring, job searches, why temp agencies are good for both busienss employers and potential employees, job training etc. The opportunities would also depend on what type of temp services you are providing.

Even though WA is geared towards affiliate marketing, you will have opportunity to learn a lot about building a good solid website that peopel will find regardless if it is strictly an online business or it is promoting a regular business.

Hi Margot here,
I had a niche in mind from the very start but now, I'm thinking I need to be more specific. There are many interests I have but this is a passion of mine.

since age 4, I drove things. let me be more specific.....

In 1963, we came home from Germany and settled into Kent, WA, which is not too far from my hometown of Tacoma, WA. My dad was always looking for ways to make more money to support our family. he ran across an opportunity to own and run a go-cart track. That was my first taste at freedom behind the wheel! i remember going to the track after my sisters came home from school (I was preschool) and hopping into the go-carts once the track was vacated. Well, I got the bug to drive. Shortly after that, i'd drive our car on my dads lap!!!

When I was in junior high, one of my sisters got a mini bike! We used to fight over who was going to ride it.....

Shortly thereafter, I got my first taste at driving a tractor trailer. it was only for a couple of blocks but, I got the process down and was able to switch gears without a hitch.... and so it went.

To date I've flown planes, driven boats, driven tractor trailer, bus, van, limousine, taxi, town cars, parts delivery vehicles, fork lifts, ridden motorcycles, ridden bicycles, horses, you name it I've piloted, rode, driven navigated, etc. I love the freedome and skill behind it.

Naturally, my thoughts went to cars when I initially thought about niches. My crutch is, if I go with my natural inclination, which subset should I work with first?

Please feel free to give me suggestions as I am only days away from starting my own website!

cars might be too general and too much competition. maybe focus on your love of driving unique vehicles, like a "need for speed and and adventure" sort of niche where you target adventure and adrenaline junkies and especially women! women seeing other women enjoy things are typically mens hobbies is a huge traffic booster. so i guess i would recommend like a niche where you explore your adventures driving unique vehicles. youll get all the outdoorsy adventure junkies to your page.

Hi Kishan,

"Getting Start Here" Course is related to building your website around a niche, usually something you have interest or passionate about. If you don't really have an idea of what niche site to go with, I would suggest you to go through the bootcamp first and learn how to promote WA.

Along the way, when you have some idea, you can always consider starting a niche site.

You mentioned that you have thousands of followers on instagram too. You definitely can definitely share WA with them. Personally, I would suggest you not to share it too quickly. Maybe you want to learn and understand how it works completely, maybe make some money yourself and then start sharing proofs to your followers that you made money by going through the lessons here at WA.

This will build more credibility and the conversion rate will be much higher in my opinion.

Hope I have answered your questions :)

Great information about niche marketing! I've learned that I can expand into a general market through smaller niche markets within that market. Although, an on line niche market can consist of many like-minded customers looking to purchase a related product which can result in multiple sales opportunities. Thanks for the great training!
