Hi there,

My names andy i don't consider myself an expert in this area but i have bought and sold websites and know what works and what doesn't.

A domain name is just like a house number it identifies who you are and what you do so when choosing a domain name you need to include keywords that are relevant to your niche or whatever you may be promoting/selling.

This can be hard for some people but it takes a bit of research and time to come up with the killer domain name, there is no magic formula for this just use ya noggin and everything will go your way.

Go to WA keyword Tool and type in your search term, anything with 5000 searches or below is good and this is what you should be aiming for, anything above that will be harder to rank for because its more popular and more sites will be trying to rank for it.

When you have found a keyword that has 5000 searches or below, look at estimated traffic, anything over 100 is ok but i always look for 200 or above, this figure is took from page one rankings i believe so anything on page 2 or above probably won't get recognised.

Ok now we have this data, next look at the websites quoted, this should be as low as possible, the more there are the more people there are using the keyword, below 500 is good.

Nearly there now.. next there will be competition this will range from 0-100, again the higher the number the harder it will be to get ranked so try and keep this number as low as possible.

If you have got your killer keyword go over to your domain site whichever you use and type your desired keyword into the search bar, if its available great if not try looking for an alternative.

DO'S

  • Use .com, .net, .org
  • Use The, And, A

DON'T'S

  • Use hyphens
  • Any other extension if you can help it

In the past i have found that alot of domains i want have already gone, i go crazy when this happens BUT don't worry, godaddy has a great feature on their site called smart search, just type in your desired keyword into the search choose your preferences and it will come back with very relevant alternatives.

Ok so i want to promote wealthy affiliate, "wealthy affiliate reviews" is a decent keyword, damn its taken what do i do? You can try Thewealthyaffiliatereviews, Mywealthyaffiliatereviews, bestwealthyaffiliatereviews.

These will all work because that specific keyword is still included that the customer is searching for so they will recognise it as a wealthyaffiliatereview, the, my, best just make the domain a bit longer which is fine.

A bad example is mywealthyaffiliatereviewsfrom2007insunnycalifornia.com.. ok i've taken that too far but you get my drift just keep your desired keyword in the domain, make sure it has 5000 searches or under with a decent estimated traffic of about 200 or above and about 500 websites quoted.

One thing to add... if their is a choice of plural or none plural for the domain name typically the plural will be the better one to take... of course their are exceptions....

but discounttoys.com would be better to have than discounttoy.com

Also about extensions is wrong. If you want to target UK customers have a .co.uk is useful... same for most countries...there is a whole world outside the USA.
