A domain is your brand and as you establish yourself as a brand or an authority in any niche it is very important that get a domain that represents you and your business as a brand.

In the same way that Google, Yahoo, Twitter, Facebook and Apple are brands that we have come to know, as your move forward with your business you will be building out yourself as a brand/authority within your given niche.

In this video I am going to be walking you through the process of researching and coming up with your domain name. We are going to be using a free service called NameMesh to help us out with this.

Then we are going to be leveraging SiteDomains to find and purchase the domain name, upon which time it will instantly be ready for us to build out our website on.

To access SiteDomains and purchase your domains, you can head here:

==> SiteDomains - The Ultimate Domain Experience

**Note: After you purchase your domain, you will receive an email from domains@wealthyaffiliate.com with the title "IMMEDIATE VERIFICATION required for yourdomain.com". You will want to open that email and VERIFY your email address.

If you have any questions about choosing a brand name for your domain name or you need any help with SiteDomains, please leave your comments/questions below.

Also, if you want to run your domain name idea by us and get community feedback for your domain before you purchase it, please leave it below in the comments and we will be happy to give you feedback and advice.

Kyle, NameMesh uses Go Daddy for its purchase of domain names. Why don't you use NameCheap? It's less expensive.

A domain name that is brandable is better than a long one that is keyword rich in my opinion. There are lots of great domains and it comes down to you "liking" your brand and of course it having relevance to your actual niche.

I am sure if you are excited about your domain, that you have chosen a good one!

Yes, you can transfer it here but you actually don't need to. You can simply update the DNS settings to point to the servers here.

You will just need to update the DNS settings and you will be able to use your domain with the hosting here.

The DNS is also known as the "nameservers" and these are what tell your domain to look for your website, which in this case is going to be the hosting here at WA.

Here are your DNS settings again (also within that tutorial):

ns1.mywahosting.com
ns2.mywahosting.com

You can update this within your domain registrar (where you bought the domain). Upon doing so, you will be able to start building your website here within 24 hours, the time in takes for your new nameserver settings to propogate.

Let me know if you have any further issues.

When you buy a domain its on google. On becoming an affiliate, don't worry about that now. Just continue with each lesson. There is still a lot to learn before becoming an affiliate. But each lesson is a step closer

When you buy a website, you own it not on google, but on a domain hosting platform. You get it through WA. As you progress through the lessons, affiliate links and making money online will be explained to you. If you want to find out, you can skip to this short lesson on affiliate links.

you need to point it to the WA servers so you can have your website hosted here

just don't build till you know where you are hosting

search box will bring up pointing to the WA servers from godaddy or namecheap or wherever your domain is

where did you buy it?

buying it at WA is easiest of all and it locks you in at the same price the next year, whereas the other companies tend to go up

Hey guys,
my first question: Will the domain names be still accessible and hosted for free, even if i cancelled my premium membership later on?

Second thing: i want your help please:
what about a domain name ' my aviation shop' ? My domain name on site rubix is 'best aviation headset' but i am thinking to change this domain name into a broad one because i don't want to specify my website only with headsets, i want it to be more general. at the same time my main title on the website is same as my niche which is 'best aviation headset'. I am now confused what to choose as a registration domain name. i need your suggestions plz! Thank you.
Reply
MozMary Premium
1. hosting is free for the free websites but not own domain websites, if you cancel Premium then you cancel your hosting at WA and need to find alternate hosting

2. you don't have to rush into a domain name until you are happy with your choice, you can transfer all the content easily across

you seem pretty clear that your website is not just a mini-niche site with an exact match domain, so it is the title that is confusing you?

the title can be changed any time, easier when you know your domain name
Reply
dianaar Premium
What is confusing me, is whether i put my niche name same in the domain name registrar or change it totally. For example myaviationshop.com is wider than my niche. This is what i am asking for.. what do you suggest abt the general domain name..since my niche is so specific (headset) comparing to the domain name i am thinking about (aviationshop)
Reply

if you had a specific niche then choose the name for that

but in your first question you say you want to be broader than headsets

I have a question - I was told that the longer the domain name the better you'll rank as opposed to a shorter domain name. Is that true?
Reply
ericcantu Premium
No. Rank has everything to do with your content and not on the length of your domain name.
Reply

You want your domain to be brandable. As the others have said, it is the content that you will be creating on your site and the pages and posts on your site that are going to be leading to the rankings.

You want your domain name to be relevant, but you also wanted to be something that you can build your brand off of.

Wealthy Affiliate is the provider and if you for any reason left, you'd be able to take it with you to be hosted elsewhere. The great thing with WA is that it is so much cheaper than other hosting providers and offers unlimited hosting, security, support, domain email, etc.

With regards to minimizing your membership dues, I HIGHLY encourage you to upgrade to the yearly membership as this cuts your dues almost in half. Take full advantage of this and you'll only be paying an average of $29/month instead of $49. Investing into yourself is the best investment you can make. I think you're doing great in this awesome community and it'd be great to see you here for the long haul :)
Reply
Webbily Premium

Hello Webbily. I'm afraid you must be in premium status at Wealthy Affiliate to continue hosting. You can use Hostgator as oppose to Namecheap. Hostgator has a paltry fee of about $5 per month for hosting.

You will need to do the following whenever the time suits you:

1) Create hosting account
2) Back up of your site(s)
2) Change the nameservers (DNS)
4) Restore the site(s) to the new hosting after setting up WordPress

You can definitely access ALL domains that you have purchased here, even if you are no longer a paying member and you will be able to get hosting elsewhere if that is the case too.

The Managed Wordpress hosting you have access to here at WA is matched by very few hosts in the industry in terms of quality, security, speed, and support. It definitely is not a budget host like the other shared hosting companies out there. The hosting you get here at WA is comparable to $250 per MONTH hosting packages.

You can learn more about it here:

http://www.wealthyaffiliate.com/hosting/

You can host up to 25 of your own domains and 25 free .siterubix.com websites on your Premium hosting platform here at WA.

Great video! Easy to follow along. Thank you! I understand the importance of having a .com domain, but what are people's thoughts on .ca domains. I'm in Canada, a lot of us are, so are .ca domains not something we want to focus on? Thanks!
Reply
Triblu Premium
Hey Brandy,

If you want to have a global business (which most affiliate marketers do) it is still best to use dot com domains.

If it is necessary to use a dot ca domain, then I would highly recommend you keep that site on a localized (in Canada at the very least) web hosting server so your site will rank best.

Being a Canadian myself, my business site (though hosted locally) is a dot com site ... but that is because I offer website services. If I were a local plumber than I would be more likely to register a dot ca site.

My personal blog (also a dot com site) has ALWAYS gained more attention from the States and even Africa ... so ... I have now moved that website over to WA servers.

Hope this helps you.

Good to hear. Brand always comes first when you are choosing a domain (and you want a .com ideally, with .org and .net being second best).

Secondary, is keywords, but they are not that important in your domain, they will carry importance with every page and post you create on your actual website.

Reply

people will debate this, ultimately it's not the name that will make the difference - look at Nathaniell's site 'onemorecupofcoffee' or something like that, he says he made a mistake as a newbie but is doing so well he is not going to change it

on the other hand, a good example @rich gives is look at Apple!

Many people do get caught up in that, it is completely normal and there is the natural tendency to focus on keywords...always.

Your domain is your brand, the content (each page/post you create on your website) is where you will be targeting keywords and get your rankings.
