In this tutorial, I am going to walk you through some simple changes you can make on your website via a plugin called Simple Custom CSS. Some themes do come with a custom CSS option, so if you have that then you do not need a plugin.

Why would you want to use custom CSS? Because when your theme updates, the changes will remain just as when you use a child theme. If you change themes though, you will have to find the code for the new theme.

Before we get started I want to make sure to mention that ALL themes are different and customization codes will vary from theme to theme. I found the specific code for this theme (Responsive by CyberChimps) by searching on Google and found the CyberChimps free forum thread for changing menu colors.

Before making any changes to your site you always create a backup.

Many themes developers have forums such as this and you can find the specific code you need for your theme. But once you have the proper code, the steps are the same. So why would I show you how to do something like this if the code is not the same? So you can see the steps and know how to locate your own codes for customization.

Hi Angela. Is CSS not regarded as more advanced than html or have I got this wrong,I take it you cannot change colour with html, not that I want to at the minute,it looks very confusing to my brain.

The best part of working with Cascading Style Sheets is that
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a simple mechanism for adding style (e.g., fonts, colors, spacing) to Web documents. Any one that has the time can learn more at www.w3.org/Style/CSS/Overview.en.html

right, you can look at it like html is the bones (structure) and css is the skin (hair, makeup lol)

Excellent tutorial Angela!

I use Simple Custom CSS too, and it's been great. It keeps my changes, even if the theme undergoes a major upgrade. Unfortunately, if I change themes, I have to go back and adjust the changes I made in the plugin. Overall though - no complaints!

Nicely done!
