Backup your files and images without plugin or FTP

  1. Go to your dashboard
  2. Tools > export > all content
  3. Save as - Folder: Backup website and library
  4. Go to Media
  5. Bulk selection
  6. Right click > save as > Webpage complete
  7. Folder: Backup website and library
  8. Cancel selection
  9. Check up if your library is copied
  10. To be completely save, copy the files to an USB stick

Never delete images from your media library which you are using on your website!

This is an emergency procedure, in case the server gets hit by a bomb.
You can rebuild your website from the bottom.

For a complete backup to restore your website you can use FTP

Using Filezilla to backup your website

Now all files and images are copied to your computer

Success!

Hi Loes,

I tried steps 5 through 9 to download my media library (by the way, if the library is in "list mode" you can not "bulk select"...it needs to be in "grid" mode.).

My resulting "Webpage complete" download appeared to be only a view of one page of pictures and not the entire library group.

What am I doing wrong? And, can this actually be used for backup?

This is only for emergency back/up and cannot restore the website with one click of a button. Your files are all saved in one folder.
On the left of the toolbar, you can switch from list to grid

Although the web host has the backup, it's good to have an online backup for a website even we have kept all the documents because it is easier to install if ever there are problems.

A good method Loes for a copy of your content.

Preferably and as a proper backup I would still prefer to use a plugin for the database part (or the export option within tools on dashboard) and the FTP for the images and files.
It's because you keep also the directories and subdirectories that WordPress creates for its media library.

How would you restore your method of backup onto a wiped website?

I had my kleurboekjes website saved like this, and I build it again page by page.
Starters are totally not ready to use FTP

I will add this info on my training, thank you

I understand completely that starters are not ready to use the FTP and I do not want them to either. But I am just worried with the end result when people use that method and move a site over for example. They could get demotivated by having to start over, even though they got a backup of some files.

With the tools export you get all the text at least back in there, but the problem lies in all the images. They don't come back automatically and would have to be re-linked piece by piece, blog by blog.

The alternative are some plugins that do everything for you, FTP part and database part.

But a great tutorial nonetheless Loes!

Yes, that's right, you have to add your pictures one by one, but WA has a complete backup too, and this is an emergency backup, you still have everything but not in place:)

Great stuff Loes.

And yes, never delete media images from the library. I did that once and wondered where the images went from my blog pages.
I thought once I put them in my blogs I could get rid of them in the library. No No No.
