Step 3: Get Rid of Links That Are Harmful
Having made an evaluation of your backlinks and identified the bad links, now it’s time to do away with them. This is because they can be toxic. Now, you can get rid of the unwanted links in the two following ways:
- Disavowing – This involves moving the links to the disavow section. After that, you can send it to the Google disavow tool to complete the process.
- Removal – Contacting the owner of the referring site and asking them to delete the link.
Step 4: Perform Cleanup of Your Backlinks
The following two processes are involved in this step.
1. Disavowing
This comes in handy if you cannot find a link or you can’t reach the site owner. Navigate to the “disavow” tab and export the content to a text format. After that, upload the .txt file to the Google Disavow tool.
It’s important to note that you must make documentation of the efforts you’ve made to delete the unwanted links. This is because Google requires proof to be sure that you did all you can. Only after that, you can move the files to the “disavow” section.
2. Removal
This is the recommended and more convenient way to get rid of unwanted links. Navigate to the “remove” tab and connect with your email. Make a request for link removal by modifying the template.
After that, you can either input the recipient’s email manually or it will be automatically detected.
When making a link removal request, endeavor to use the correct approach. It’s also imperative you prove to webmasters that you have a genuine concern. Try as much as possible to use a polite and natural tone in your message.
You taught me heaps about backlinks.
