Step 1: Benchmark Your Backlink Profile
This may not be a compulsory process but it’s worth it. This process lets you take a peek into your competitors’ strategies. It could be about the strategies they adopt in link building.
That way, you can make a fair evaluation of your profile. Here’s how you can execute this first step.
- Open Backlink Analytics
- Input your domain along with your competitors’ in the “overview” text box
- The tool will show you relevant details that’ll tell you whether you have adopted the right strategies for link building.
Therefore, below are the details to look out for.
- Number of backlinks/Referring domains/Referring IPS –This parameter compares your backlink footprint with that of your competitor in terms of how big they are. This is done by estimation.
- Authority score – This parameter helps you evaluate whether your domain will be great for link building or not.
- Backlink Types – This shows your competitor’s content that websites link to the most.
- Link Attributes – This shows you the vulnerabilities in your competitor’s profile.
- Referring domains – This shows you all the domains you reach out to. Seeing the domains will help you determine whether or not you need to reach out to more.
Step 2: Find All Your Backlinks and Evaluate Them
By now you must’ve made your assessments to see how relevant your backlinks are. So, it’s time to diagnose the main problem that makes it difficult for you to beat your competitors.
This second step is where the actual auditing starts. So, your first course of action would be to find links that appear like spam. This is because spammy links affect your rankings a great deal.
Now, there are other things you have to watch out for. It could be the valuable links you’re losing or the fault in your link-building strategy. Here’s a list of the things to look out for.
- The High overall toxic score – This indicates the presence of links that are harmful.
- Small number of referring domains – Google can flag your site when there are many links from a single domain.
- High toxic score of the referring domain – This is the result that emanates from bad SEO practices.
You taught me heaps about backlinks.
