Start right away with the habit to create categories and place your post in the appropriate category.

How to make categories visible on your post

Click on top of the post on screen options, check the box before categories

How to add the category widget to your site bar?

How to customize your categories?

Go to customize site and choose for:

Display as Drop down
Show post counts
Show Hierarchy

You can give the category widget a title, but that is optional.

Add Categories to pages

For that matter you need a plugin (Thanks Trish!)

Thank you Loes for the informational training. I hope I have all my categories set up correctly. I did add icons but I am not sure where they show up. There is nothing in my drop down menu but the text. Not sure if its my theme not showing them or if it is something I have done but everything seems correct and working properly.
Best Wishes, Dana

Hi Loes, thanks for all your great advice! Just on thing I want to double check, when you say use the keyword tool for the categories description I was wondering if this could be seen as keyword stuffing, or does this depend on how far you go with it? Some other people have told me they don't fill in that description box at all so I'm confused as to what is best. Can you possibly shed more light on it for me. Thank you for your time :-)

Hi Stefanie, I have all my categories with one or more short sentences which covers the posts behind it, found on Jaaxy
Let´s say: Call to Action
Description
Make your own call to action arrows, call to action buttons diy, the importance of call to action
or
ebooks
How to make your own ebook, make your own PDF ebook, upload an ebook, 10 powerful tips to write an ebook

Hi Loes. Sad to say I do not completely understand what is being said. I want to understand what is meant by the term "slug"
Reply
Loes Premium
The slug is the part that follows your http://websiteaddress.com and looks like "my-first-post"
Like this
http://websiteaddress.com/my-first-post
my-first-post is the slug
Reply
Nickoy Premium
Ok. So, how would I enter the slug for the category? Say, for example, that I have 9 posts/articles and I want to put some in one category and others in another category, should I place the slug of each article in the slug section when making the category?

Thanks,
Nickoy
Reply
Loes Premium
You don't add slugs to categories when you create a new category on a post it will be created automatically and will be called after the category name.

When you want to create special slugs you have to go to categories and you can create your own.

I just created a new category at the top of my site, "tips for weight loss supplements" with drop downs to 2 of my posts. When I click on "tips for weight loss supplements', it takes me to a page that shows all of my posts. How do I change that? I would like that page to only show the posts relating to weight loss supplements. My site is www.weightdefeated.com

Go to Dashboard- Appearance -Menus- the Custom menu of your category- In the URL type #. This will help you.
Reply
amandatorres Premium
How do I get to the custom menu of my category? I see them listed when I go into Appearance-menus, but all I can do is add the them to a menu.
Reply
Loes Premium
The first menu item you add should have a # instead of the URL, beneath that menu item you can add your categories, shift them a little to the right
Reply
amandatorres Premium
When I go to where you told me, it shows only the posts I want to show in each category. However, when I go to my navigation bar at the top of my site and click on the categories, all of my posts still show up.
Reply
Loes Premium
Have you checked the boxes for the categories on your posts correctly?
Reply
amandatorres Premium
I'm not sure. Where do I check those boxes?
Reply
Loes Premium
On your post in edit mode on the right side
Reply

Thank you for that. I just checked all my posts, and all of the categories are checked correctly on each post.

When is it advisable to have subheadings? Is it possible to hide the category "Uncategorized?
Reply
Loes Premium
It´s advisable to use subheadings in every post, people are tempted to view over a post, before reading, and attractive subheadings can make them decide to read the whole post.

Why do you want to hide a category? When people come with a particular interest to your post, and want to read more about that subject, you make it easy for them to click the category they prefer
Reply
spatz007 Premium
I just want to hide the "Uncategorized" category. This is where I keep pages that are still under construction - images, subheadings, ad placement - which I can't do in Site Content.
Reply
Loes Premium
Not that I know, you can uncheck the box on the post, would that help?
Reply
spatz007 Premium
Thanks anyway :)
Reply
Loes Premium
Just found out, you can rename the category Uncategorized into eg. Everything else
Reply
SusanHardman Premium
If you have pages or posts that are still under construction, no one but you can see them, correct? Then it would not matter if the 'Uncategorized' category is associated with the page or post, I would assume. But I could be completely wrong about that.
Reply
spatz007 Premium
In my theme, all new pages or posts show up in the sidebar. I set them up as "uncategorized" and have an image of under construction to show that they are not finished.
Reply
Loes Premium
Only posts in draft are invisible, published posts are out there
Reply
Loes Premium
You can do that, an under construction image tells your visitors to come back later

I came here to figure out how to add categories, and came out with a lot more knowledge of their importance. I'm putting the "description" on my list of things to do. First I need to figure out what those keywords are for the higher-level groupings.

Thank you!

Hi Loes, this is great information on Categories in WordPress. I'm at the point now that I need to categorize my posts because I have so many.

I'm confused though on how to list my categories so the reader can see all the categories visually. I want to all my categories to appear automatically. How do I do this?
Reply
Loes Premium
When you add the category widget to your sidebar, all categories will be in it and clickable

There is a plugin called content view that allows you to apply certain categories of posts to each page of your site. Not sure if there is a training for it here at WA or not but it's on YouTube if you need a tutorial.

Thanks for the tutorial. One more question please have 18 posts can I name all in one category because my website is about safety.

Kindly advice.
Reply
Loes Premium
It's better to tear it as much down as possible, you can add one category with all, and after that others with specific items
Safety(all)
Home Security
Hygienics (Cleaning products, hot water and steam cleaning, etc)
Safe working conditions
Safe on the road

and so on>>>

Do you get what I mean?
Reply

Yes I got it. Thanks

I am beyond confused with this... all I want to do is make a blog post showing up on my main page right now also show up on another page. It is a recipe post so it belongs on my recipe page as well as on the main post page. If someone can tell me how to do this in a less confusing way that would be greatly appreciated!
Reply
Loes Premium
It will appear on your home page when your homepage is the blogroll, when you have chosen for a static homepage it will not appear
Check this in settings>reading>chose for latest posts

Then: To let the recipe appear in the recipe category do as follow:
Go to your post>edit>look at the right for categories>click the box before the category "recipes", if you do not have a category recipes yet, add new category

I hope this helps, when you have questions about your website, please add the URL, so we can take a look from this side

Do your categories go to empty pages? I created my categories with post pages just a title and than create category, now they are empty posts?? Do I delete all the empty post pages and create categories this way? Do they index sub item menus in the category?
Reply
johnwai Premium
Hi Stacey, you have to go to your posts and assign them the categories if you haven't done so already. The categories should show up at the right side of the posts page editor.

Categories are created under posts menu from the dashboard. Then the categories will show automatically on the side bar widget.
Reply
Loes Premium
The category is only showing when you have added a post to it, empty pages are not a good idea to have on your website anyway Stacey
Reply
staceysells Premium
Yes it does all that in posts-categories I see all of them that I created but originally I created them by just doing: add new post, put a title, add category on the bottom right-named it the same as the title-save.....Than I added it to my menu under my main tabs on the site and than added sub items (custom links) under them. Is this ok or will they come out up empty pages?
Reply
Loes Premium
You can check the links you've edit to your category, and the sub-links on your website, where they end up
Reply
staceysells Premium
When I click on a category, the featured description comes up and under it all the posts (featured) comes up.
Reply
Loes Premium
That's right, you get a selective blogroll
Reply
staceysells Premium
I figured out the problem, when you create posts
as categories, the category comes u
But the post needs to be deleted. In a
sense it's another route to create categories
But once created delete the post
