Let start from the beginning... You have decided you want to build your own online store. Now what?

We need to get a plugin to get it going.. For the purpose of this example to illustrate how easy it can be to do, I will be using WooCommerce. Currently I do have this plugin running on two of my sites.

Step 1: log in to your Wordpress site and go to your dashboard

Step 2: on the left side, click on Plugin - then add new. You will see a search screen appear to the right. Where it says keyword, type in e-commerce and hit 'enter' to do the search.

Step 3: Choose your plugin. As mentioned earlier, I will be doing this example based on the WooCommerce plugin. A nice feature about this plugin, at the bottom of the tile, it will tell you if the plug in is compatible with your Wordpress theme, this will give you the confidence that it's going to work for you.

Step 4: Click on install now, wait for it to load, and then click Activate.

Which theme do you recommend? There are a few that are built for ecommerce.

Honestly most themes I have come across have been compatible for the plugin. When you go to install WooCommerce it will tell you if it is compatible for your theme.

I did add the plugin to a site that was listed as 'not tested for this theme', and it works just fine. The layout is a little different from an other site Woocommerce in (that site was compatible) but overall still happy with everything.

Hi Stephania

Was just wondering if Step 4 is there or only me who cannot see it?

Thank you for the training, I was planning to add a store to my site or a plugin that would allow visitors to purchase items so this looks perfect :)

Regards,
Kamil

That's great, I really hope this helps. I'm going to put together phase 2 today with a step by step on how to add your products once you have the plugin ready to go... good luck with developing your store
