So just what is FTP?

FTP stands for something (like everything in website speak), in this case it stands for File Transfer Protocol. It's a way of accessing the files that actually live on the server where your website is hosted. When you log into your Wordpress site, behind the scenes there are a bunch of files that are all working together to provide you with the experience of creating a website.

When you upload a file with Wordpress it actually creates a folder on the web server and sticks your file into it - a simple form of FTP.

With FTP we can access all of the files of our website, the technical ones that relate to Wordpress (we'll be leaving those alone) as well as our files.

Why would you want to access your website via FTP?

There are a lot of reasons. Perhaps you want to upload a PDF, or something else that you might want your visitors to download. You might want to edit your theme. You might want to manually reinstall Wordpress, delete a stubborn plugin. I use FTP a lot when I create websites. While it is possible to go without ever needing to use FTP (especially with Wordpress Express) there might be the odd occasion when you do. This is what this tutorial is going to show you how to accomplish.

You can't access your website through the way you described anymore, and when I click on that email management thing it wants you to, I just get told, that doesn't exist...
There is a bug report on this problem, but since only premium members can post links (At least allow trials one link a day, just for these kinda situations...), I can't make it any easier for you.

Yeah, you no longer have to log into plesk to do anything. We have completely removed plesk.

You don't need FTP to install and work on your website, so I would suggest you don't worry about it when starting out.

I cannot quickconnect in FileZilla. it says the server cannot connect. Does anyone know what is wrong or how I can fix this problem.

Are you sure you have the details entered correctly? Double check them, and if that still doesn't work try contacting WA Hosting support with a support ticket (https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/websites) and make sure you tell them what the full error message is.

I cannot quickconnect in FileZilla either... and @mhamilt link to WA Hosting support comes up with a blank screen, so how do I send them the info? I cut and pasted it into "report a bug" but where does that go? seems like a blog post to me...

After I log in on step 5, I don't have the option of clicking on file manager. Anyone know why? I only have access to the email options.

When you login to Plesk try clicking on the Home link top left, if you still can't see the other icons I would submit a support ticket via this page https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/websites sounds like maybe the domain isn't setup for physical hosting.

As Welshy says, submit a support ticket and in the meantime try using the FileZilla application (on page three of the tutorials). Mark.
