Audience targeting helps tremendously in both next content marketing strategies. When you know who is your target audience and visitor, you will know what type of content that you need to create and where to distribute your content. How it can help you will be explained in the respective strategy page, so have a little patience there :)
Every business in the same category/vertical/niche can have a different audience targeting with other business, and this is one of the key point to win the competition. The targeting can be affected heavily by your 'product'.
E.g.: In a personal finance niche, my company targets low-to-mid income class segment for their Loan products. We focus on a local city (not even the whole country) to maximise profitability. My competitor in the same niche targets mid-to-high income class segment, because they are focusing on investment products.
