As we all know, using content from other websites on our own sites is a BIG mistake, both SEO-wise and etiquette-wise. Content does not only include text, but images (and videos) as well.

Today I’ll be discussing why you can’t just use any image you find online on your own site. This includes “free” images from sources like Pixabay, Pexels and Unsplash just to name a few.

I will also direct you to 25 truly free and 100% risk free sources for images, where you don’t have to worry about any penalties for stealing someone else’s work.

Alright, let’s get on with this….

Google has an image page, but that's just about the riskiest place to find images for your website.

Here are a few of Mel's posts on the matter, they may clear things up for you:

I did and Thank you, I just got upset, because all or most of mine came from googles free images? Why do they put them there if they are not free. To make money in court? lol Thanks and sorry for the hard time.

Yeah, Google images seem pointless unless people simply want to browse through them online with no intention to use them...I guess that's what they're for - to be looked at, rather than used.

Great list which gives us all many more resources. Did you find "unsplash"? It has free images.

Hi Duncan,

Actually, Unsplash is one of the "free" image sites that isn't safe to use. Read section 12 of their terms: https://unsplash.com/terms

These other 25 sources I list here should have you pretty much covered. Once you see what some of them have to offer you won't miss Unsplash much. :)

I knew a lot of people didn't know where to look when it came to finding truly FREE and SAFE image sources, so I figured it was time for a good training resource. :)

I found some good pics on Pexels.

Actually, Pexels is one of the sources that is unsafe to use. Read their Terms of Service and you'll see.

I've found some great photos there as well, but unfortunately had to skip them. (I don't even look on unsafe image sites anymore).

I thought it was safe, and it says next to the photo in the text. But I'll read the terms again. Thank you.

Just because it says it's safe, doesn't mean it is. All the big free image sites SAY they're safe, but in reality almost none of them are.
