Introduction

It took me a long time to buy into the idea of joining Instagram simply because I was so hooked on Pinterest.

When I started researching social media channels I chose Pinterest because the half-life of a Pin is 3.5 months which means it takes 3.5 months for a Pin to get 50% of its engagement. In comparison, the half-life of a tweet is only 24 minutes, and the half-life of a facebook post is only 90 minutes.

When I read reviews comparing Pinterest and Instagram they sounded very similar to me. Both are visual platforms driven by beautiful photos.

I couldn't quite grasp why it would be worth my while joining Instagram and so initially I joined just as myself (@laurenjeankinghorn) just to check it out and keep in touch with family.

I looked at few profiles of Instagram influencers in my niche and some of them were gorgeous! The penny dropped and I decided to go for it.

On 3rd February this year (2017), I joined Instagram as Inspiring Mompreneurs and Happy Human Pacifier.

My first goal was to get my Inspiring Mompreneurs profile to 1000 followers so that I could become an influencer on Webfluential.

For interests, sake (and to add some colour), here's my top post so far (posted 9 April)

Hi Lauren!

I completely agree with you on not caring about how many people I follow! About 3 weeks ago I decided to see if I could grow my IG account that I really didn't pay attention to from 150 (all friends and family mostly from facebook). I'm currently at around 600 (you get a lot of follow/unfollowers which I hate so the number fluctuates up and down daily, but I downloaded an app to unfollow those people).

The only thing I did was follow more people that I was interested in following and my following grew!

This is a great tutorial. A lot of great nuggets and I'll be implementing them all!

Hi Lauren Jean,
Thanks for sharing the how to. It got me wanting to try Instagram now after reading this post. Btw, I love your 'call-to-action': "Click Next to find out how.." that for sure got me to clicking on the Next Page button. Guess I will use it on my website as for the Call-To-Action line.

Thank you.

I've been trying this strategy for about a week now, and saw my followers double. Can you explain Webfluential more?

Hi Erin, am delighted to hear that. Webfluebtial helps social media influencers connect with businesses. They offer an online media kit to influencers. Thanks for the reminder, I actually haven't checked my Webfluebtial profile for ages.

Hey Lauren,

I read this tutorial and commented here 3 months ago. Back then I had 180 followers. After using some of your suggestions, I now have almost 540, a 200% increase since November. I couldn't be happier. Thanks again!

Hi, Lauren.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I've bookmarked this tutorial. The amount of how-to information and "insider tips", all laid out in easy-to-understand language, is stunning.

Any chance you might ever make similar training for the other social media platforms you use? *fingerscrossed*

Hi, my followers 300 I'm following 1300 what's is the problem?
Reply
laurenjean Premium
Hi Abdullahi, I also follow a whole lot more people than those who follow me. In my opinion it's not a problem. Just keep engaging with those you follow and more will start following you. Like and comment, like and comment. Post great content.

Hi Lauren, in step 9, do you mean that we use those tags listed (or some) in any niche?
Great training! Thanks :)
Reply
laurenjean Premium
Hi Gopika, Thanks for your comment. It's really best to find the hashtags that are most popular in your niche. A hashtag must make sense... i.e. tap into the audience you are trying to attract with your site. I consider what I am posting about and treat hashtags much like keywords. I look for those that are most applicable to the subject matter of my post.

Hello Lauren! i really like this post, is very helpful! i just have a question, how did you got into webfluential? i've been reading their FAQ and it says their approval is based on your followers on twitter which should be 1000+, how did you got approved with instagram?
Reply
laurenjean Premium
Hi Ileana, lovely to meet you. Not sure if their criteria have changed since I joined. When I joined it was either/or. I hadn't even joined Twitter yet but was able to join as soon as I had 1000 followers on Instagram.

i just saw they say this "If you have a small following on Twitter, or no Twitter account, but cater to bigger audiences on your blog, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube platforms you can apply by sending us links to your other social media accounts"

i'm not sure if they review instagram, facebook and youtube together to get approval. It scares me a little bit to try out :(

Thank you for this training Lauren! I created an Instagram account months ago and have 180 followers so far. I used some of your methods and gained 2 followers in the last 10 minutes. I'll have to go through it again and see if I can get to 1000. I'm going to see about automating as well.

Thanks Lauren. This has been Uber helpful. I'm pretty wet behind the ears when it comes to Instagram and was a bit"shall I, shan't I?". But having read this and a few other posts, there seems to be a lot of value that I'm missing out on - I was especially taken aback by some of the stats you give. So thanks again for a really useful course - it really is appreciated and has certainly opened my eyes to Instagram.
Kindest regards,
Sean

Thanks Lauren - so far, I'm making headway :-). Just one quick question... are you limited to the number of people you can follow in a day? As you recommended, I started following profiles in my niche and noticed that after about 20-30 follows, the follow button wasn't working.

Thanks a lot for creating this training, I am going to start using more my Instagram account, I do have one question, will it be good to use my personal Instagram account or should I create a new one probably with the same name as my web page?
Reply

Absolute pleasure. My advice is to create one with the same name as your website so your website becomes a brand.

Thanks Tracy. A lot of my pics come from the Moms I interview or photos I take myself. Sometimes I download free images from Pixabay.

My phone seems to be too old to be able to connect with Instagram, halfway the sign in the process stops.
Tried to login via FB, same issue
Reply

Oh no, Loes. How frustrating. You can login via your pc as well. Adding pictures is a little trickier via pc but its do-able.

I have tried that, but I had a clear moment, I do have a tablet somewhere at the bottom of my drawer, I dusted it off and my daughter just placed the Instagram app on it and it works! But now I have to figure out how to get my website pictures into my gallery to be able to place more on Instagram. I have seen yours now:) Lovely, and I want to make those pictures on Canva too, to make them a bit more interesting.
So I have some work to do:)
First Canva, then uploading to the tablet and place them on Instagram. Pfewww.

update!
I managed to add one picture to Instagram, using canva and my tablet!
