Being your own boss

Yay! I'm my own boss

This is the dream isn't it? To be your own boss, to call the shots, to work when you want and where you want. This is all well and good as long as I don't forget one thing. This is still a job, and I still have to work.

Work, really?

When I get home after 8 to 10 hours of working away at my day job, the last thing I feel like doing is spending a couple more hours working. My brain is in chill mode, I want to relax, hang out, kick my feet up.

But, then that little voice in my head kicks out some phrase like "if you always do what you've always done you're going to get what you've always got."

Bossing yourself

When I'm at my day job I have all kinds of people that I'm accountable to; customers, coworkers, other tradespeople. I also have deadlines, commitments, goals I'm trying to achieve. These keep me working and the result is I earn money!

And although to some degree I have these at home they aren't so much in my face or feel so pressing. So it can be easier to let things slide and the result is that I won't make any money!

Ways to keep myself working at home

Here are some ideas I've come up with to keep myself on task. feel free to come up with other points as well.

  1. Punch your own time clock. Make a regular time that you are going to work on your business. Make others aware of your "time at work" as well. As you consistently practice this you'll find your thinking becomes more focused around your business.
  2. Make a plan of what you're going to work on. Such as; I'm going to spend 40 minutes studying the course material, 40 minutes writing content for my web pages, 30 minutes blogging, and so on.
  3. Set objectives to reach. These are mini goals, such as; I will complete 5 lessons this week. I will write 30 blogs in 30 days. I will research 3 articles on my niche in the next 2 days, and so on.
  4. Reward yourself. At my day job I get rewarded by the satisfaction from seeing what I build materialize, and by getting paid. At WA it may be a few months before I get any money, so other ways I get rewarded are by positive comments and feedback I get from the community. Completing a lesson, and learning something new about building website, and or marketing strategies.

Disclaimer

This list is by no means complete nor am I perfect at executing these points, however working at them keeps getting me closer to my goals.

Good fortune

Richard

Thanks, Richard. This really is good advice. It's not something I have been inclined to do since I started this journey but something in me wants to "Start fresh" and really set a schedule/work plan to help me stay focused.

I've been in recovery mode for the last couple of months and really haven't felt very motivated to work on my site. In spite of that, things, (traffic), have been happening with my site that are encouraging me to get back on track.

Love reading your blogs as they are insightful and encouraging so...on to the next one. All the best...Wayne

Thank you for your encouraging words, Wayne. It's very motivating to me to hear about how I help someone.

How true! I'm in the same boat, working 2 other jobs.

Nice list and summation Richard! Everyone knows the saying, "you got to stop and smell the roses". A lot of folks tend to forget that before you can smell the roses, you must: 1. prepare the soil 2. plant the rose bush 3. water and weed the rose bush 4. prune off sucker shoots from the rose bush.

Than you can smell and enjoy the fruits of your labor!

Very good information my friend !

Thanks, Steve. I value your input.
