The Rearview Mirror

As we began to close the 2015 year, I reflected on the good, bad, and not so good that happened in a year. I remember my mom saying ‘be careful of what you ask for’ and ‘there is power in your words’. You see, I found myself in an unhappy space while working in my corporate job. I often would say that I don’t want to do this the rest of my life and I want to have my own business one day. So I thought the remedy was to go back to college 25+ years later and now I have my degree with honors I might add, but something still made me sad. I would be full of ‘would’ve, could’ve, should’ve’ or if I could go back and start over would consume my every thought.

You see, I was spending so much time looking back that I couldn’t move forward or couldn’t enjoy the present moment. Now that I put that negativity in the universe, it gave me exactly what I asked-to be free from my job. Wow, I didn’t expect it to be when I was unprepared, but long-term vacation, here I am!

Now I realized that I must turn this into the time to give ‘me’ a try and focus on the positive things yet to come. Once I started looking forward, I began to enjoy being home to have conversations with my daughter afterschool, enjoy my walks in the morning, reconnect with my spiritual side, and my creativity seemed to flood my thoughts.

Now, I see clearer, I see the road ahead, I see that the past (rearview) was needed to propel me forward. Rearview mirror, I leave you only to make adjustments as I drive forward to my destiny. There are no regrets and my wish for everyone is to realize when you looked back far too long and pull over to the side of the road, re-adjust and move forward.

I leave you with a couple of my favorite quotes:

“Jesus said, "Anyone who begins to plow a field but keeps looking back is of no use in the kingdom of God."

-Luke 9:62 in the New Century Version says:

"In the business world, the rearview mirror is always clearer than the windshield"

-Warren Buffett
