What is a Facebook Fan Page?

Facebook is one of the biggest social networks in the world, and it is still growing. Millions of users check their news feeds several times a day, and this is what makes it an ideal platform for all kinds of advertisement and business promotions, where numerous features can be used to build awareness for various causes or to gather support for bands.

A fan page is a Facebook page that revolves around a certain topic, project, celebrity, business, organization, or political figure. Fan pages are visible to all users, unlike personal pages, and can be followed to receive updates (by "liking" the page). Thus, public speakers, restaurants, retail stores, hotels, bands, photographers, and other entities can create their pages to present themselves to the whole world.

Like all genius things, creating a fan page is simple. You need to log in to your Facebook account (or create one, if you don't have it), then go to the settings on the far right of the page, click "Advertising" and then "Create a page". There are six types of pages you can create, each one with its specifics. Your options are an "Artist, band or public figure" page, a "Brand or product" page, a "Company, organization or institution" page, a "Local business or place" page, an "Entertainment" page, a "Cause or community name" page.

Click "Agree to Facebook Page Terms" to set up your fan page. Then you should think about design and content. Choose a profile photo, fill in the "About" section to describe what this page is all about. After that it's all about promoting, creating interesting posts and inspiring more people to join your cause. Invite friends, and use the "Build Audience" feature provided by Facebook. It enables you to invite all your email contacts to view and like your fan page.

The fan page can also display some your featured likes to market related brands or topics. This feature is available through the "Edit Page" option. There's also a possibility to use the "Top Five Profile Pictures" feature, which enables you to display the best of your brand/site/group/organization, whether it's clothing, photography or football photos.

Apart from profile pictures you get to display "Featured owners" of the fan page. Featured Owners can become a powerful advertising tool because people can relate to the owner and this will make the page more recognizable. There's another trick every page owner should know - how to get into your fans' news feeds. Facebook prioritizes a user's news-feed, so people may not even see your page updates very often.

There are a few ways to make audiences engage more. First, ask for opinions, make inquiries, ask questions, people like to engage that way. It is also crucial to post updates regularly, at least, several times a week to keep the audiences interested. Finally, cross-promotion across other networks will help you build up a more diverse fan base. For example, you can tweet a link to the question or a poll with an interesting title to grab more attention.
