Are Mushrooms the plant of immortality?

A mushroom is the fruit of mycelium which is is the vegetative part of a fungus, consisting of a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae. They produce spores capable of traveling great distances on the wind, on clothing, and in animal feces. Mycelium is a single-celled organism that travels several inches a day. Meaning there is only one cell wall that protects this organism from pathogens, yet it thrives more prolifically that any plant or animal on the planet.

Early Folklore

According to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics of 4600 years ago, mushrooms were food for royalty and no commoner could ever touch them. Many other cultures in the ancient world believed that mushrooms had properties that could produce super-human strength, help in finding lost objects and lead the soul to the realm of the gods. The ancients had the knowledge of the value of mushrooms to heal both the human body and the forest ecosystem.

Are Fungi the "Grand Recyclers" of Nature

  • Mycelium's vast structural network is responsible for decomposing plant debris, at the same time providing nutrients to the plant and animal kingdoms. In other words, mycelium is earth's life support system.
  • The saprophyte subtype of fungi is largely responsible for recycling organic debris and providing nutrients to the plant and animal world.
  • Mycorrhizal fungi are vital to the health of forests because they transport nutrients to different species of trees.

  • Fungi can be used to sustain forest communities by preserving natural forests, recycling woodland debris, sustaining replanted trees with the goal of strengthening the forest ecosystem. Also fungi from old growth forests have the potential as sources for new and vital medicines.
  • Various mushroom varieties possess potent anti-microbial properties.
  • Mushrooms protect human blood cells from infection by orthopox viruses including the family of viruses that includes smallpox.
  • Mushrooms were instrumental in the development of penicillin.
  • Specific varieties of mushrooms possess antiviral activity against such viruses as hepatitis B, herpes simplex, HIV, influenza, pox, and tobacco mosaic virus.
  • Several varieties of mushrooms are sources of other medicinal compounds including triterpenoids and glycoproteins.
  • Fungi can be used to degrade heavy metals including lead, and mercury, industrial toxins including chlorine, dioxin, and PCBs.
  • Fungi can be used to control pest populations, including carpenter ants and termites.
  • Oyster mushrooms can thrive on contaminated soil and regenerate it by neutralizing the contaminant. When they die and rot they provide a healthy environment for new plant growth.

  • Using fungi in the garden builds soil, improves yield and decreases fertilizer requirements
  • Edible mushrooms are good sources of protein, are very low in simple carbohydrates and fats and are high in antioxidants, selenium, potassium, copper, B vitamins and fiber.
  • Mushrooms are rich sources of enzymes, and enzyme inhibitors in mushrooms can be protective against breast and prostate cancer.

There is ongoing research now into how mycelium and their fruit, mushrooms, can be harnessed for uses that support the health of humans and our ailing planet. Mycelium can be used on farms, in urban and suburban environments, in watershed districts, in factories, on roads and other stressed habitats to filter protozoa, bacteria, viruses, bacteria, silt and chemical toxins.

Mushroom cultivation in short, can be a powerful non-harmful way for solving serious problems that affect not only our health, but the health of our environment, and thus could possibly...

I heard Dr. Fuhrman say once that we should eat at least two mushrooms a day because of their micro nutrients. Works for me because I really like mushrooms! This is a great article! Thank you!

Hi Christa and I am glad you enjoyed it. Mushrooms do have many health benefits we could all benefit from should we choose to include them in our diet.

I have them almost on a daily basis! :)

I love mushrooms. and will definitely eat more from now on:) Thank you.

Hi Angela- Did you know that in Asia shiitake mushrooms are venerated because of their rich texture, smoky flavor and many health-boosting properties they contain. Just plain good for you!

Bottomline, I guess I need to learn to like mushrooms. :-(

Marvellous, informative post - loved reading this, and want to share it with everyone! I will be reading your other posts too (in between working on my as yet unpublished website - I just want to get it up and running, as I have lost so much time by not prioritising this).

Another great article Tom.
Mushrooms are the 'M' in Dr. Joel Furhman's 'Eat To Live" program of GBOMBS.

I learned from the Dr. that green leafy vegetables and as little as one mushroom a day could reduce the spread of cancer and as well as fat cells. By preventing blood vessel growth needed for fat and cancer cells to grow.

Needless to say I eat mushrooms every day.

Hi Phil-You are so right, mushrooms are a medicinal miracle that have a powerful punch!

Question: Why isn't this Front Page News?

Answer: Unknown

And I will too (eat mushrooms everyday).
Hi BrooklynPhil
Great info, as most of my family have been exposed to asbestos, so we are always taking note as to how to keep the ill effects at bay. Not a day goes by when I don't find some great information here at WA, either in the training or within the community - it is the best.

How about there are fewer profits if we all learn to use Food As Medicine and make the Community the Cure.

Hi Katharina, I was exposed to asbestos in the Navy and Cancer runs in my family. I started on Dr. Furhman's "Eat To Live" program to reduce the chance of Cancer & Diabetes. In the process, I lost 60 lbs in 4 months. I'm still on "ETL".

Thanks for the info. Very interesting.

Thanks Jim- Glad you found it informative!

A very stimulating and well researched article. I'm going to take a further look with regards to the Egyptian ( Royal ) connection. I look forward to reading more of your blogs ...great website too! Paul

Hi Paul- always great to hear from you and I am glad you enjoyed the article!

Hi Juli-glad you enjoyed it!

Yes, a Cordyceps Sinensis was used for Emperor's indulgence in China. It has similar properties to ginseng, being used to strengthen and rebuild body after exhaustion. Cordyceps is natural antibiotic, without side effects.

Hi Nemira- and thanks for your comment. There is still so much we can learn about the healing ability of mushrooms!
