Introduction:

I am in my ninth (9th) year of Wealthy Affiliate. I am not much of an affiliate marketer to tell you the truth. I have always preferred to market products. My son and the number of my grandchildren also market products. We are a product marketing family.

I have used the Wealthy Affiliate affiliate program, and now with JAXXY, to pay for my annual tuition’s. Belonging to Wealthy Affiliate has never cost me one red cent, but it has brought considerable incomes to me and my family members.

But Now I'm Old and Gray

I’m too old for many things now days and I don’t like spending my time shipping products which is required in product marketing with the exception of drop shipping. But I no longer even do that (well not often). I’m just too lazy, still busy doing other things.

Just the other night I was out shooting the moon with my 60X camera. I about fell on my head. I no longer have good balance.

College Money

Like Kyle and Carson and Ryan and others, my granddaughters generate full-time incomes which they used to pay for living expenses and their husband's college expenses.

One of my granddaughters is making a ton of money and is about to start a new business as soon as her brain tells her what it is. She and her husband do not need the money. He is extremely successful. She just loves doing business.

Speaking of College Money!

My son has 15 children and so he has always liked to add income to his veterinarian business. He used to own the http://www.Irishflutestore.com which he sold to a friend. He now is in the herb business http://www.homegrownherbalist.net where he sells books, training, herbs and herb textures. He lectures mainly in the West but is on his way to Texas sometime in the next couple of weeks. When he goes to trade shows, he always comes home with a pocket full of cash and orders.

How It All Began

Some years ago, my son came to me and said that he wanted to start a website. I had building a lot of websites over the years and I was operating about 30 websites at the time. But I relied on my training from Wealthy Affiliate to do things right the first time. He already had one thing that was essential to the Internet and that was a mailing list. We put up the site, he notified his mailing list, and he was in business on the net instantly.

His two daughters are in business together and at the busy times of the year the whole family seems to be involved accept me. They keep about a dozen full-time workers all year. Since their sales are during the Holiday Season and they must pay their employees all year, they have a cash flow problem with they handle by budgeting out their income on a monthly basis and preserving operating capital to pay their workers.

I am helped them over the years, but now everybody in the family is so far ahead of me, that you know who is helping whom.

Can You Actually Make Money in Affiliate Marketing?

That is the reason that you came here in the first place. What I have noticed over the years is that too many do not stay here long enough to entrench themselves and affiliate marketing. They somehow get the thought into their minds that they are in a get-rich scheme and should be making money three days after they set up their website.

Now Back In The Good Old Days

There may have been a time that income could be earned easier by affiliate marketing than it is now. PPC pay-per-click was once a very economical method for a new marketer to earn money. Now it is not only expensive, but you had better learn how to do it before you start or it can put you in the poor house. (Such training is offered here.)

It used to be that you could put up a quirky little site with an affiliate banner on it and earn $50 a month. If you set up 100 sites, you had a good income. For you who did not major in mathematics, that is $5000 a month. I have a friend who did just that. He had a bunch of writers, English majors, to provide the content for his websites.

How Long Does It Take to Make Money by Affiliate Marketing?

It takes time to start a new business. You need a business plan and you need to find a workable market. After you have designed your website, you must draw traffic to that site. Then you must maintain the site providing relevant quality information to your readers.

I’ve never done this before but let’s put up a hypothetical timetable:

1. Learn how to market. This takes forever but you can get going in two or three months.

2. Find a niche market. This process should not be rushed and it is not a sin to take one month to do it properly.

3. Build your website. If you’re going to do this right, I would suggest that you take another month to do it.

4. Drive traffic to your site. This will probably take you at least another three months.

Let’s see now, with the help of the math majors, how long does it take to get going in a profitable manner? According to my ingenious listing, it takes seven months.

The that is pretty close to what I’ve seen here at WA. I’m not talking about making to sales. I’m talking about continuous sales coming in, perhaps two or three a week. You may not be making a lot of money, but your site is making income and you know how to do it so all you have to do is wash and rinse as the saying goes.

Two Young Women

Two young women, who are probably still here at WA worked for a full year before they made one sale. But then things happened. They had gained enough traffic to create significant sales from their website.

I suggest that you work your butt off for a year before you count the change in your pocket.

What You Need to Do to Succeed at WA

1. I suggest that you go to SBA.gov and thereafter use their business plan module as you go about your work here at WA. (Optional)

2. Set up a table that lists the lessons with your timetable for learning them and implementing them. (Optional)

3. Study each lesson and make sure that you do ALL the tasks. Leave something out and you might be in danger of failure. For example: You you go to a AWeber or GetResponse to set up a mailing list and you look at the cost. You think that can wait, that you will do that after you start earning some money. Without a mailing list you will probably never make much on Internet. You will have defeated yourself.

4. Do one thing at a time. Get one nation profitable before you move on. You will never get into trouble by doing one thing at a time. You can’t be perfect at everything, but you can be perfect at one or two things that can assure you success. If those two things are providing quality information on your website pointed exactly to the problem that your readers are looking for an answer and driving traffic to your site, you will be in fat city.

Many Have Learned to Make a Full-Time Living at Wealthy Affiliate

I can name a dozen with no problem at all. Others are making a good part-time income.

It is not proper to ask people about their income. But we did see a public announcement on our blog here that said that two couples had met in a way for a certain wedding all of which was paid for by affiliate marketing.

Most of us know Veronica, our Swedish friend with two young children, who likes to stay home with their children and to travel to Sweden. This is possible because she knows how to make by the on the Internet and she learned that here at WA.

Some of you know, Ryan, who made over $500,000 while a student and who now makes up the money because he is so damned bright and clever and hard-working. He is still an affiliate marketer but he also does a lot of product marketing using Amazon’s fulfillment program. He also owns a couple of restaurants. Who knows what else is doing?

(I have always tried to get Ryan to climb Mount Moran in Wyoming. I told him that that is his mountain and that if he will climb to the top, it will give him a new perspective on life and business and that when he comes down, you will be able to buy General Motors.

As far as I know, he has not done it.)

You see why I’ve stuck around here all these years. The members are so darned interesting.

Hang in there, Buster Brown!

John

P.S. It use to be that folks read my stuff here. Now days, I have too much competition and so I seldom make the Top 10 anymore. That means that only a few of you select few will actually read this. Who wants to hear from an 84-year-old man?

Hi John,

Nice testimonial and semi-bio...Your life is quite full, that's for sure...With all that love and activity, there is no time to get old! That's a good thing...

That is what keeps us all going, though, maybe...At one point, prior to the time when I "retired" the first time, fellow folks in my field had an average life expectancy of about 5 years...

When I retired the first time, I was 42...I took a week off and went to a job that paid 4 x as much and with less responsibility...From there it just went on and on...

It is still "going on" today...Almost 18 years now since I "retired"...Well, in actuality, like you, my life has remained full and I have been fortunate to have lots of adventure over that time...

In hindsight, the BEST move I made possibly was to go fully independent and step away from the Corporate world. I did this incrementally, first as an independent contractor, then completely...

Having your own business provides freedom...You no longer are trading time for money...You look for ways to have more time and still make money...

Meanwhile, you are spending more time with your family, traveling, doing things that interest you, etc. I do not think that we need to buy into everything that is being sold to us in schools, by society, etc.

In my case, I went from trading time for money to starting a business...This was not my first business but it was the first time I had committed full-time to my own business...

Since that point, I have not looked back...That was 17 years ago now...

In regards to the many members here and the ones that have experienced success, either through affiliate marketing or otherwise, this is one of the reasons I also like the place...

Not only that the training is spot on for what the focus is here, namely affiliate marketing...

There are other useful sites, tools, and training that over time people may want or need, but pretty much the entire package for affiliate marketing is here...

I have not been here nearly as long as you (hats off to you for that!) but I am pretty sure I want to be here when I am your age (I am a bit behind you, but will be reaching that magic "teenage period of old age" in about a month - The big six zero)...

The advice you provide is good for the people laying out their paths in the online marketing world....

Like some of your family, I feel that affiliate marketing is a good way (not the only way) of establishing recurring income for yourself and family...

Most of my sales experience has been offline, traveling to many obscure and dangerous places and selling real things...As I transition to this online world, some things are different, but in essence, it is still sales, just using different tools...

One of the benefits of online sales is that you have a lot more freedom (this can be a liability for some) than you have with a Corporate gig...

It is what you do with that time that will determine your success...

Very enjoyable read this morning (having my first cup of Java this early AM from sunny (and hot) Dubai! Best of luck and I hope that you are here for another 9 years!

I am pretty sure that will be the case...For both of us!

Cheers!
Dave : )

You have lots of wisdom, Dave, and you are only 60! lol John

Thanks John, I hope my journey is as fulfilling as yours. I am alway interested in what my elders have to say because they are always a wealth of knowledge and information. Not enough of the younger generation respect or even listen to them. Great story and I hope to hear many more. Take care, from this youngster in Tasmania, Australia. Tracy :)

Just after I got my B.S., your government gave me permission to immigrate there. Then when I retired, I could have gone to NSW to teach. I love birds so I'm sorry I didn't get down there to fulfill a boyhood dream. Now I'm too old to travel so far. lol John

This was a very good and informative and very interesting blog!
I enjoyed reading it very much!

You are so right in everything you have said.

If a person does not take the patients or the time to focus on what they need to say and really like or enjoy what they are doing... Not always the case. How can we expect our audience to!!

We of course all need and want to make monies! But because monies are so much of our focus! The reader will usually pick that up and can and it will kill our website! But if we truly enjoy what we have put out there for our audience, it will make our readers not only come back for more, but want to get involved as well!
Then we have achieved success and have accomplished what we set out to do.

Thanks TJ :)

Right you are! Money should be the last thing on your mind. Your goal is to help people. Google+ will warn you if you get too commercial. John

I'll Listen ! I worked on my DJ site for a long time. It has brought me gigs but the gigs are tough now. I need to move on for less physical work. I Love Dj ing but have to realize I'm getting older.
☺☺☺I am working on my wealthy affiliate Bootcamp site. My problem is I start and put a lot of work into it then I stop for months. I need to continuously work. Been here almost 4 years. My progress needs to pick up. ♪ ♫ Thanks for the words of wisdom T J !.......................................Scotty B ♫

You need a scedule, Scotty. Hang it on the wall. Don't let things lag. lol J

I've been here for 2 and a half years and I haven't made one affiliate sale yet. That doesn't though I haven't generated any kind of income with my website as I've generated just a little bit through Google AdSense. I'm not wanting to call it quits and I'm thinking on new ways to get interest and traffic to my site. I refuse to quit and what you just posted just reiterates my desire to keep pushing on.

Make sure you have a true niche and a mailing list. I suggest you discuss this by PM with Kyle. John

The niche is there, but I don't have a mailing list as that is something I do want to work on.

Hi TJ, nice to hear from you and great post. I read that you've a wonderful family, big one too. And all in business. Getting older is not always a joy, is it, and maybe you 'll ge even to be much older. Pity you live so far away, otherwise we could visit the places in Holland where you have been, and what is wrong with a 84 year old man and who doesn'twant to hear from this man. Not many I'm sure, marion

Marion, I love the Dutch people. I was taking a train from Luxembourg to Utrecht and an elderly Dutch lady adopted me. When we got to Utrecht, her son grabbed my bags and hers and put them in his car. I tried to take a bag or two but he said, "We Dutch are dumb but we are strong." Then he drove me to the hotel. John

Ditto to what DPolny wrote. I will always read your sage advice. You really hit the nail on the head too.

How many times have we seen people join, stay a few weeks and leave in frustration.

I wrote a blog several years ago about Affiliate Marketing is not much different than having a Brick & Mortar store. Did they start making tons of money at first? Of course not, it takes time and a whole lot of hard work. Patience is the Key!

Hugs! Woof! Woof!

Anybody who doesn't want to learn from the wisdom of an 84-year-old will simply have to learn things the hard way.

You know already that I'm all ears every time you post ... I Love It!

But I'm glad you didn't stumble and hurt yourself when you were taking pictures. Heck - I'm 30 years your junior and I stumble all the time, only not doing anything nearly as fun as taking shots. More like cooking and dishes (because we rarely, rarely eat out ... restaurant food just really doesn't taste as good as homemade).

God Bless!
~Cathy

Cathy, you have always been so kind to this old man. I agree on good home cooking. My wife no longer cooks but my mother taught me how to cook. However, my wife's caregiver doesn't allow me to cook. She is fortunately a very good cook. We live the good life around here. My fruit trees are very prolific this year so she is very busy canning but she does still do all the cooking. We have peaches, plums and apricots on all at once! John

Reminds me of my childhood. You are right ... that's the good life! :-)

John, if all 84yr old men talk as much sense as you do about business and business plans then I will be listening to them for ever more. This is one of the most inspirational posts I have read on here, and it certainly fills me with ideas a plenty. Thank you.:-))Steph

You are welcome. I feel that a post here should be aimed only at helping other members, usually anyway. But it is more of a gossip board to some. lol But it is here to use as you please. John

Too true John, I will use this post everytime I become a little unsure of what I am doing, I have bookmarked it so that I will be able to read it, again and again, to keep myself on track.:--))Steph

Well, I'll be your age in 40 years and that being the case, I sure am interested in what you have to say. If I could share your post here within WA, we'd get you to the top 10.

P.S. My favorite line was "....as soon as her brain tells her what it is." Brilliant.

Thanks, Geoff

Thank you, Geoff. My brain has been dead for years. lol
