Instead of New Year's Resolutions.

Hey guys:

Here's a really cool thing I think I'm going to try this year instead of New Year's resolutions (which tend to die after about one week of overly enthusiastic OCD behavior and then suffer a really slow deterioration, ending up wimpering in a corner by the time March rolls around).

Ferriss does Past Year Reviews rather than New Year's Resolutions.

  • He suggests that you grab a notepad and create two columns: "Positive" and "Negative."
  • Take your calendar/planner from the last year and look at every week, jotting down any people, activities or commitments that triggered peak positive or negative emotions for that month and put them in the respective columns.
  • Then, he says, ask yourself which 20% of the people, activities or commitments in each of the columns produced "the most reliable or powerful peaks." Highlight them.
  • Look at the answers you got.
  • Take your "positive" leaders and schedule more of them into your new year. "Get them on the calendar now!" he says. Block out the times you want to spend with the people you love doing the things you like to do before the dailyness of life catches up with you.
  • Prepay for events if you can, but get them on that calendar. It's how you start to make them become real. Set them up beforehand.
  • Then comes step two --
  • Take your "negative" leaders and put them on a NOT-TO-DO LIST.
  • Stick that list someplace where you'll see it every day for the first few weeks of the new year. This one's a reminder of the people and things you know are going to bring you down. They are not going to get on your calendar no matter what.

And that's it....

Ferriss does a really interesting blog and I do recommend it. Here's the link: https://tim.blog/author/tferriss/

I already do a thing where I review my past calendar and journals but I never thought about how to make it more systematic and easier to see which things work to bring me up and which ones bring me down.

Hope your holidays have been going well and that the new year brings every joy.

(Hmmm...this thing could probably help with that....)
