Inspiration from Tony Wheeler

Earlier this month I was reading Tony Wheeler's UNLIKELY DESTINATIONS -- his book about how he and his wife Maureen built Lonely Planet. It was extraordinary to follow along as he explained how one thing led to the next thing and then to the next.

I came away from it thinking that I'd like to be like the Wheelers -- looking at interesting stuff and coming back with reports from the hinterlands while balancing the rest of ordinary life along the way.

For real, I am not some crazy wisdom person meditating in a cave. I'm not some scientist or scholar devoted to dissecting the minutia of esoterica.

It's unlikely that I'll set up to be some kind of guru or life-coach. I'm too busy trying to figure out my own life, actually, and seeing whether what I'm thinking on and being told by other, wiser sorts actually works.

I'm just a gold-panner -- trying to find the precious stuff mixed in with all the dross and silt coming down the river.

Blogging for me is becoming another practice, I think -- one that complements the ones I am doing with my property management and my poetry.

It does seem to me that lollygagging about pondering heavy thoughts is really not a great way to build a life. Doing stuff and testing out assorted theories, however, do hold a lot of interesting possibilities.

And taking care of the mundanities is just a given. (I have this really strange addiction to eating and being comfortable and big, fat fluffy cushions and lots and lots of hugs..... Hee!)

Hope you're enjoying your own journeys, guys....

Hi Netta, good to see you, I am going to read that book, thank you for sharing.

I guess the cool thing is we get to craft our own journies where and how we travel to the destination its the fun part.

Alex

I think you're very right about crafting our own journeys, Alex. It is the best bennie from doing this thing we do.

The book sounds interesting Netta, not read that one.
It sounds as though they are living their lives 'in the flow'. When you are in that place, everything just flows much more easily.
You are on the right path for you when everything flows in that manner.

I do agree with you, Linda.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.
