Blogs come in different "flavors"

I'm starting to get clearer on this thing I'm doing, I think.

I'm learning there's a difference between a "lifestyle blog", an "authority site" and a "personal growth" site. Mostly, it seems to me, it's all a matter of labels for the guys who construct listicles.

Listicle guys make blogs about the 10 or 20 or 200 best whatever in each category. Their blog lists remind me of the Dewey system in public libraries. The listicle-folks categorize the blogs the way librarians categorize books...but they're not so methodical about the thing.

"Lifestyle blogs" are those ones that are like personal diaries and journals that people share about their lives and highlight the particular interests of each Maker. The really successful ones seem to lean heavily on presenting helpful products for their audiences.

"Authority sites" are the ones who do a lot of reviews of products or make commentary about a particular segment of some industry or politics or other Important Subjects and the best ones become the go-to sites whenever you need to know about something or other.

"Personal growth sites" seem to be about particular stances people take and how you, too, can walk that way. Lots of do-it-yourself self-improvement -- mindfulness stuff, positive thinking and motivational stuff, connecting with Spirit or your own Inner-ness or connecting to other people better and like that.

You can spend a lot of time sorting out all the different flavors of blogs, but those seem to be the Big Three.

I am finding, though, that the real is blogs, vlogs and all the other labelled bits of talking to other folks don't make money per se. What they do is attract eyes (lots and lots and lots of eyes if you're lucky) and then, when everybody's looking at you, you can influence these people to do things.

If you do it right, you can be a pretty successful street busker in the beginning -- doing your dance and getting people to throw money into your hat.

If you get good at that you can even move into a "store-front" and become a sort of mini-Amazon or -alibaba or something. Or you can have a road-show and go consult with the Big Boys.

But, at the beginning, it's good to remember that you are a busker and you're working on perfecting your craft.

Just going online with your dance doesn't automatically guarantee that you'll make the mondo-Big Bucks. You still have to do the same old work-work-work. (It can be a lot more fun, however...even if you've got no rhythm and only have two left feet.)

My take on it, anyhow....

I always enjoy your unique and colourful writing.
Another categorization of blogs would be the "To-earn-money" kind and the "For-personal-satisfaction" group.
You can rarely combine both unless you pretend that writing about financial products or reviewing lady razors floats your boat.

Thanks for the comment, mertens. Hee! Trying to imagine lady razors "floating my boat." A mind-boggle, that!
