Seo speak

OK - SEO is a pain. A royal pain.

Not to complain (too much), but it is a pain.

"Why - you have written things all your life," my wife quips. "Blogging should be easy."

But it is and then again it isn't.

It is not hard to get 1000 plus typed words - I can even get a few coherent thoughts the first pass. But to get a post that passes SEO - that's a different animal

SEO SPEAK

I have written scientific grants and research papers that also had to be written a certain way.

I became an expert of that way. I would sit and compose medicine-speak type stuff for hours on end and eventually you get to think like that.

It is like when you learn a language, they tell you to read aloud a book written in that language. This is so the language patterns and vocabulary can become a part of you.

It is the same when you have trained yourself to write in a certain manner.

Unfortunately, that "certain manner" is not the SEO manner.

Writing in the SEO Manner

So what is this manner, my wife asks.

Well, you have to try to not speak in any technical terms, have to use small words, not use the passive voice, incorporate your keywords, keep sentences less than 20 words, break up your paragraphs frequently, etc.

Getting enough pictures, writing your meta-description, etc.

You all know the drill.

But it is not the drill of technical writing which is what I have done so many years.

But I am learning.

So that's OK. I am learning.

SEO Google Pain

Then there is the Google pain. Somehow, Google is far and away the most important access point for finding information on the Internet.

I don't know how many of you remember the "old days" of Prodigy, AOL, CompuServe, and several local providers.

You were not tied into one access point - but it seems like now most information and searches are done through Google. They have a monopoly.

At our house, we call it "Dr. Google." You want to find out something about anything, you ask Dr. Google.

But the good doctor holds all the good cards and then periodically just decides to change the rules, or put on new rules, or you need to bow down to him and go through various hoops.

It's like when you are a little kid playing Monopoly and the bigger kids would change the rules in the middle of the game. And not tell you until afterwards.

Of course, you don't have to - but then maybe your business won't work.

There are other access portals, but Google has 90% of the business and is swimming in money so you have to play the game.

So ...

So what do you all (or y'all as we say in the South) think?

Do you "Pay the Google Piper" with all this SEO. I find it literally takes twice as long to write a blog deconstructing it to be "SEO friendly."

I am not convinced it makes it a better article or any more clear or easier to read - only that Google likes it better.

Does anybody use Yoast for their SEO? Other PlugIns?

Can you get enough traffic from social networks so you really don't need to bother with Google?

Any advice?

Dave.

Thanks Dave for this post. He is taught to beginners, such as myself. It encourages thought and analysis.
Greetings!

Thanks for your message.

Agree that SEO is necessary to keep the blog readable and get it indexed - but it is a pain, kind of like getting the flu shot. It's good for you but it hurts.

Dave.

I totally agree, it determines the position,

Hey Dave,
You are right about SEO and Google, but (remember the golden rule) whoever has the most gold rules and that's Google. Try to go along to get along as it could be worse.
I'm using Rank Math. It is free and has everything I need. When I get to be an expert then I may have to pay to play.

I feel like I am right there with you Dave. I have spent the past 20 years writing IT related documentation and it is hard to come out of that mindset and into a 'Googlecentric' way of writing.
I am pretty sure that Google will think I am spamming keywords but it is just the way I am used to writing - making sure terms are understood and repeating important points. And repeating important points :)
I feel your pain but am sure we will get there.

I haven't tried the social networks, but I can imagine one might do well with them, Dave!

Jeff

There are some great points and thoughts in there Dave. They got me thinking about the different writing styles I know I can manage. I've published a couple of fictional novels (one for under 14's, another for adults) so, that's one (or two). I worked in the personal development / social work industry so, writing for clients or the "system" demanded two more. Academic degrees taught me another style from a psychological perspective; I enjoy this one very much. Next we have Google and SEO. Still learning that one but enjoyable never-the-less.
Thanks for the post, it fired some thinking and that is always welcome. Time to write!
Steve
