My wife and I are wondering for our first website if we should go the free route of a domain and practice the basics first before spending the dollar on a better domain name. W
It really depends on your goal. If you're looking for a practice run, do free. If you're planning to develop this site into a money maker, go free for now and then move to a custom domain later. If you're ready right now, go custom domain now.
You can move your siterubix site to a domain of your own quite easily here. Start free but be sure to move to your final domain choice before you start ranking in the search engines.

siterubix sites do just as well as a .com for google & bing rankings.
If you wish, you can .com a siterubix later on.
Only if you are completed attached to a domain name that is available as a .com then I would snap it up.
