The First time Hurts?

Doing something you have never done before can be hard.

There is a lot going through your head as you prepare to do something for the first time.

We naturally have anxiety, apprehension, and various concerns when we are about to do something for the first time.

I recently heard that the first will always be the worst. Essentially meaning that the first time you ever do something will always be the worst. You and I can not expect perfection the first time we do something.

I can tie a neck tie in less than a minute, but the first time I did it,…well lets just say I was frustrated. The out come was a poor knot and a length that was definitely questionable. That’s just one example. What about the first time you tied your shoes, rode a bike, drove a car, or wrote your name. Although these things are very simple one you have done them time after time, in the beginning they were challenging, and frustrating.

We have to always remember that the first time will always be the hardest, the most frustrating, the most stressful, the most challenging. When we really stop to think about it we can say to ourselves, ” Yeah I know that.” So much as we know this to be the case it doesn’t always help us face our firsts with anymore confidence and faith than is usual.

You and I would like to know what to expect from our efforts, and we know that the first efforts we put toward a task or pursuit will cost us more and require more sacrifice than the efforts that follow.

So why do we struggle to try new things, because we are acting in fear rather than faith. We fear a dismal outcome, when we could have faith that things will all work out.

So when you are faced with the opportunity to do something new, and you realize it’s something you want to do or need to do, then get to it.

The more faith we have the more we can do and the more we can learn. Sure the first time we do something, it won’t be perfect (and quiet frankly it won’t ever be perfect, just keep striving to improve instead of over criticizing yourself).

The more willing you are to learn and improve the more you will be prepared to do things for the first time.

The better we get at being willing to take first steps, to begin, to start, and do what is new to us, the faster we will begin to progress at a healthy pace toward our goals.

To live the life you and I wish to live we have to do new things.

We can not become more than we are without starting down the path of learning and progression.

The more we accept challenges, and face them and defeat them, the more confidence we develop and more competent we become. The challenges we face change us, and these changes help to define who we are and realize our potential.

May we face our firsts in faith. May we be willing to learn and improve, rather than shrink to the whispers of doubt and anxiety.
