Know When To Give up And not Give Up

I always say that quitting is not an option. However I have to admit that this is not always the full truth.

It is good to persevere and not give up or give in.

All successful people have one thing in common when it comes to goalsetting.

They never give up on big goals!

Angela Duckworth, is the CEO of Character Lab, a nonprofit dedicated to the development of character in children. She is also associated with the psychology department in the University of Pennsylvania.

According to her book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance,Great has two components and they are passion and perseverance. She describes these as push and pull factors.

The passion drives you to engage in something and the perseverance pulls you through when the going gets tough.

Interesting most people here recommend when choosing a niche you start with passion.

Personally as I have written about many times I choose a niche with profit as my primary driver.

That is because I don't want to get embroiled in a niche that isn't gonna make me a lot of money.

Nonetheless I have enough experience and smartness to know that some niches are not for me.

I know that even to write the word "Forex", is enough to pull me into the middle of next week and I can't either research or write a word in that niche.

So no I don't recommend a niche that is profitable if you're not interested in it. My very first niche was acne and I wrote over 400 articles.

Now 25 years later the very word acne is still enough to give me the screaming heebie-jeebies. I never want to see or hear the word again.

Interestingly, Angela's research indicates that it is the level of grit which is the indicator of whether somebody will succeed or fail. She discounts intelligence and talent.

She dismisses talent because it's something you either have got or haven't got. It's nothing mysterious.

Just because someone is more talented than you doesn't mean that you can't succeed. You can try and it is this aspect of trying that Angela Duckworth calls correct. Another word for it would be persistence.

1. Develop Overriding vision.

She suggests that you develop grit by having an overriding vision underpinning everything you do. People who want to serve others will be more productive and have fewer sick days than those that are just interested in the dosh.

Think about how your work as a niche connects you to society. This can be helpful when you're struggling with either passion or perseverance.

When you look at jobs with the purpose they seem more meaningful and you are less likely to give up.

2. Create a goal pyramid.

You have all heard the food pyramid. Create one for your goals. The broader line at the bottom of the triangle is your main overriding vision. Make sure that everything above it feeds into this overriding vision. Think of the top lines as a fire pit and keep chucking wood on them.

3. Quality versus quantity.

You always need to push yourself past your comfort zone in every session. Whether you are writing or researching push yourself just that little bit further. Never give up on a task until you ask yourself

"Is this better than what I did earlier?"

4. Become the optimistic.

The default position of optimists is "there is always a solution".Every experience whether good or bad is an opportunity for growth. When they fail they toss it off like an unwanted coat. It's just another way they found not to do things. It's not a barrier to success but it's a stepping stone.

People with high levels of great very often future orientated. They put off expectations for today and just slog working towards a better future. They don't get distracted by life they know what they want and their fully prepared to go out and get it.

So these are the rules the having grit, but it doesn't mean we have a limited strength once with motivated enough.

There are certain questions you should ask yourself in one of those questions is

Should you keep flogging a dead horse?

It doesn't matter how much perseverance you have if you're driving the wrong way up a one-way street.Ask yourself this questionShould I keep going or should I give up?

Once you've started something most people find they have a rapid spurt because they're excited about the new project. You write your first article, you get indexed by Google, you make your first sale.

Once the novelty wears off things get harder and it becomes tougher to push through obstacles especially if you're at the point where you've written a lot of articles and haven't got any sales.

Seth Godin, a serial entrepreneur suggest that if something is really worth doing then you will probably have a dip in experience . He thinks that this dip create scarcity which is exceptionally valuable to long-term success.

The longer you stay in the dip, he thinks the closer you are to ultimate success. He surmises that most people give up on their in this dip.

Observing many people over the last 15 years at wealthy affiliate's I have noticed that a lot of people do give up on the cusp of success. They give up just at the point they're about to come out of the dip.

In some cases they've made the right decision. They have made the wrong decision in the first place about a niche. Sadly, in the majority of cases they throw away all the progress they've made just when they will succeed.

When I was 19 my mother enrolled me at Manchester University to read law. I persisted with it for a year because she wanted me to do it and so did my father. In reality I hated it.

More than that I realise very quickly that it was a treadmill. I also knew the only thing I wanted to do in my life was to travel.

There was no way I could combine the two. Once I qualified as a lawyer any travelling would have to wait until I was 65 or retired.

I worked on the basis that if I couldn't be the best lawyer in the world there was no point in doing it. However I knew I could become the best traveller in the world.

I had the objective to travel to every country in the world I still have about 40 to visit but I have time. Equally it's not such a burning ambition to travel to every country in the world now. I still want to travel but becoming the best traveller in the world isn't necessarily my first objective.

I have to admit that this way of looking at things works best when you're talking about careers.

For instance, if you want to be a surgeon and you're not dedicated to being the best in the world, it might be a good idea to give up right now.

On the other hand if you want to learn Spanish as I did years ago, my objective was to speak Spanish sufficiently to be able to travel in Spanish-speaking countries with ease. I still struggle to write in Spanish but it's not important, I have Spanish-speaking friends who will correct my work.

If your vision no longer fires you up in its totality. In other words if you're giving up because you're struggling to find out new research ideas that it is properly worth persevering. Unless of course your niche is pink phone covers for an iPhone.

If you're short of new ideas, there are many people in this community they can help you and you can persevere and make a successful business.

If on the other hand you realise that your niche bores you to tears and you're not interested in it then maybe it is time to throw in the towel and try something else.

Affiliate marketing is not for everyone. It may be you just need a new niche or you're not cut out to be self-employed. Examine how focused you are and can you do better.

The answer is no and you're not getting the success that you need then maybe consider this is not a career choice for you

Catherine, great thought provoking article. I agree, we definitely all go through that honeymoon period, then we hit those dips. I personally have done this more than once with several opportunities. Yet, I keep finding myself trying again at this business thing. My first goal is to continue and persevere through to see where it leads me.

Sound like a plan

Catherine excellent Post and advice. This will benefit a lot of people to analyze their situation & go forward or disembark. Either way it will be the best decision for them. For most people I believe it lies in their Niche decision. I found that out myself later than I should have. Best to you.

I enjoyed reading your post, Catherine!
When I decided to select my niche, I was not 100% sure, but there's my passion. So I continue up to now. I do not have to earn from my link yet, but I have from my Google AdSense, which is I am happy even a little. And I didn't feel to give up! Thank you for sharing. Joyce :-)

Wonderful Joyce
Great to follow your passion

Thank you, Catherine :-)
