How is at your side?

I want to migrate my sites from WA immediately, but perhaps this is not possible in such circumstances.

Hi,

My site went down today. The site manager page states "No WordPress Website Installed" ! and all my emails have disappeared. Site support are looking into it. It is quite disappointing.

just for curiosity, what does site support explain to you?
Reply
jvranjes Premium
See what I received this morning, they treat me like an idiot. After 3 days of sites being down and my traffic crippled due to this.

So in reply I sent them the monitoring result shown above by tammyv2018, see it yourself in his comment, it is shocking, this is similar to what I have with my sites. I sent the same thing to Carson, no reply.

I see. Happened for me as well. I guess that there is some misunderstanding...

How do you measure this uptime? This looks really bad.

Must have this tool, they were trying to convince me today that all was fine with my sites. This looks like a solid proof that nothing was fine.
Reply

It is BAD! Here is the last 7 days and I get a notice every time I login to WP to write or modify a post! I use www.pingdom.com but I'm sure there are others...Every time I contact support, they say it's up and working fine. I just paid for the yearly Premium on Black Friday. I wish I would have spent the $ on another hosting service.

This is horrible. Where do you put the code which they give you? I need this to show to Support, but just until I move sites out of here.

I did send to support. Here is their canned answer every time I contact them about it.

This issue has been resolved and your website should be working fine now.
Reply

I see, I have received the same answer today. It is hopeless.
Reply
jvranjes Premium
Very surprised, again? Now contact them and they will say the issue is resolved, flush dns.

Thanks! Someone(s) is definitely targetting WA on purpose.
Hope they get to the bottom of it. DDoS attacks are quite difficult.
They need to install hardware DDoS protection. Very expensive though.
Make sure that any host you go to in the future state their stance on DDoS protection and how they plan to mitigate if it should happen. Hosts with hardware protection stand a much better chance of surviving.

Let's hope it's not one our websites that is being targetted to shut down the host WA.

Being able to easily log-into my website today, I have no issue (knock on wood).

However, in the past there was an issue with my inability to log into site going back several months ago. This problem went on for about 8 - 10 days with support personnel addressing my problem seemingly unsure as to how it could be resolved. I was sending in multiple tickets per day. Support even moved my site onto a second server.

I don't recall exactly how it was resolved but it finally was thanks to one member of the team who, I guess, really knew what he/she was doing.

Best of luck to you in getting this problem resolved. I know, firsthand, that it can be infuriating as anything!

Extra management re. Google Analytics.
You would have to add that site to the exclude list in Google Analytics, so as not to get false traffic reports.

Tools like those are useful but they check your domain quite a bit and it will be recorded as hits to your site.

Just went to login to the site for the client I invoiced on Tuesday. I am unable to access it. Support said there is a DDOS attack against the server. This is becoming too common an occurrence and I must monitor my words before I launch into a tirade of expletives. Argh!!! :-/

Yes, Russians or Koreans again, or both. Such a bad people.
Reply

Last time that happened, I "warned" them that sometimes the true nature and intention of a DDoS attack can be to plant a backdoor.or malware.
We don't seem to get any alerts from support...any emails about anything. Is there an office for WA?

David

No alerts from Support at all. No reply from Kyle at all. Losing respect here very rapidly. I understand that attacks occur, but that doesn't mean that communication should cease. My client just emailed files for me to upload, which I cannot. I am looking at other hosting options today, because this is becoming a daily occurrence which is unacceptable - especially when I'm paying them money. :-/

I have my sites hosted elsewhere, I think it is better to have a dedicated hosting service, it is more reliable. I also think it is much better to have my sites hosted in the country in which I reside in, i.e; I live in England and so I have my sites hosted with a hosting company that is also in England. It makes sense if some one wants to do detective work and check you out.
It is worth subscribing to WA just for the knowledge and training. If you cant afford separate hosting then, by all means host your sites at WA.
The performance monitoring is good at WA, but you can't access your site's database and you can only access you files and folders via FTP.
It made sense to me to have my own server and host my sites on it outside of WA.

Mine is down too for some countries . I use http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com in order to check.

Moving multiple websites is not an easy task Jovo, especially big websites. I recommend using a database backup plugin and FTP to ensure everything works at the other end.

Had a chat with somebody from Hostgator, any idea why their Cloud option is better than the other WP package?

They say they would move it free of charge, I am a bit skeptical, this holds usually for cPanel sites which we do not have here.
Reply
LRenee Premium
I have hostgator. They moved my sites for free. I went from cpanel to managed/optimized WordPress for some sites and WA to hostgator for others.

I don’t know why one is better than the other. I will say hostgator does my updates, so one less worry. I also believe they take care of some site issues.
Reply
jvranjes Premium
Thank you, not sure that I understand. Were they able to move sites from WA to their hosting, and for free?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Watch out Jovo. I moved my sites away from HostGator over a year ago. They charge $50 a year per website for SSL. I get them free at DreamHost. I'm managing over 30 websites including subdomains and the cost factor for SSL is significant.
Reply
jvranjes Premium
But they say it is included? Have to check this. I am getting lost. Thank you.
Reply
LRenee Premium
Yes. Hostgator moves your site for free.
Reply
JeffL61 Premium
Hostgator must have improved their services judging from what I just now read in your comment. I was a member of WA back in around 2009 or so before leaving after about a year. At the time, WA did not provide any support service for hosting members' sites as they do now.

So, hearing about Hostgator, I signed onto one of their packages as they would host my then site. I had to have someone do it. To put it bluntly, Hostgator was terrible. Poor tech support including staff who seemingly were untrained, having not a clue as to what they were doing, and so on.

Perhaps in the 8 - 9 years since this hosting service has improved. All I know is that back then whatever I paid as a member for Hostgator to provide support for my website each month it was like flushing money down the toilet.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
I'm pretty sure that they only move one site for free. Jovo has more than one site.
Reply
jvranjes Premium
Yes one for free only, unless all are "on the same cPanel" whatever this means, in this case they move all together for free.
Reply
jvranjes Premium
I just had a chat with somebody.

SSL is only in Cloud Business plan which I would take in any case. There is Private indicated for SSL. So after asking this is the answer "the Private means the SSL certificate is associated with your domain name. that is all it means. It is still secure and shows the website as secure with that green lock"

I am still not sure if this is it.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Do some more research please Jovo. See which hosting companies the computer magazines recommend. And look for recent reviews. Standards change over time so perhaps HostGator has improved since I left them.

I enquired about free SSL as a customer and again as an affiliate. They said they had no plans to make SSL free.

"Thanks for your inquiry. The SSL certificates are being discussed currently, and a decision on those should be made shortly.
We don't have an ETA on when, or whether or not they're leaning towards offering them for free or not.
But I have voiced your concern to our Marketing Head, and he will reiterate this to the CEO. "
Reply
jvranjes Premium
Thank you Marion. I appreciate this. Yes, although my traffic is crippled these days, shall not make quick moves but my sites will be migrated from here as soon as possible. Yet another experienced member warned me about HostGator, he had sites there for 2 years and strongly suggested to avoid them.

Have you seen the graphs shown here by tammyv2018, this is very similar to what I experience with my sites.

Reply
MarionBlack Premium
I've been waiting for 36+ hours for them to link my WA account to my Jaaxy account.
Reply
LRenee Premium
They move 1 site for each managed/optimized or cpanel hosting space you purchase. For example, I purchased a 5 site optimized package. I only had 4 sites at the time. One on WP and 3 on a cpanel at GoDaddy. They moved all 4 sites for free. One thing to keep in mind is hostgator is far more expensive than WA.

One site a year will likely cost you about $300.

If you’re doubtful, you can always talk to them before making a purchase. Secondhand information or assumptions are never as reliable as the direct source.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
I was with HostGator for many years but I escaped. I was not happy with the cost of the SSL certificates and the support was appalling.

I provide a professional site moving service and I've moved many sites from one hosting environment to another.

I'm happy with the hosting I've got a DreamHost.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Of course that's a minor issue compared to having your site down half the time.

Not for long, searching for a host.

I understand. I’m not here to promote hostgator or sway people to move their sites around. I’m just answering a question someone asked about the free site move provided by hostgator. I’m not giving my opinion about the service at all. Just providing the facts, as I know them.

-Yes. Hostgator will move your site for free.
-If you have multiple sites, you would need to purchase a multi-site plan. The number of sites they move depends on how many sites you purchase.
-They will transfer a cpanel, WA, or other managed site to their platform for free.

As for my opinion, I’m not a loyalist when it comes to hosting. There are a few companies I would never use again because of bad experiences. However, Hostgator isn’t one of them (yet). I went with them this time because I got a great deal on a 3-year package for 5 sites. However, the renewal is extravagant, and I don’t see myself sticking with it when my 3 years are up.

There are plenty of hosting companies around. If you’re willing to shop and move sites, you can continually lock in great deals.

Yes. I missed to add. You do not know if your sites are down, and they are for sure. Last year they blocked all robots and before that I could see what was happening, and it was terrible, 10-20 times per day sites were down. They blocked all tools of that type, the explanation was that they slow down the system, the tools were pinging the system every 5 minutes to check the site.

But this now is drastic and I have no choice. Looking for something else urgently.

They have limited traffic to 100000 visitors/month for all sites. Just had a chat with a person. This is not good enough for a long run. They migrate sites for free if cPanel type, but WA is not this, they use something modified, so Siteground offers 1 free migration.
