I'm transferring a domain away from WA and I clicked on the "Email EPP Code" button under SiteDomains.

How long should it take to receive the code? A few minutes? A few hours?

I'm glad you finally got that part of the equation sorted.

Now, make sure you turn off the privacy setting so your ownership details can be verified.

And backup your website using Updraft Plus, WP Clone, and FTP.

I’m not transferring the website, just the domain registration.

Turning off the privacy setting was the first thing I did. I had one transfer fail because of it a few years back.

I discovered some time ago that WA domain name registration was the cheapest available when you took the additional cost of privacy that other companies charge into consideration. Are you sure you're doing the right thing for your circumstances?

PS. I don't host my sites at WA but the domain names are all registered here.

An Epp code is self generated and so should be immediate

It definitely wasn’t immediate or at least receiving the code via email wasn’t immediate.

Looks like it didn't take too long.

Not too long, but longer than I expected.

I received the code about 20 - 30 minutes after I requested it. The email said the code is "valid for an indeterminate period of time".

You'll want to use it as soon after you receive it as possible.
