The Value of Trust

Do you remember the “Miracle on Ice”? In 1991, Sports Illustrated named the “Miracle on Ice” the top sports moment of the 20th century.[1] If that isn’t enough, think about this: As “part of its centennial celebration in 2008, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) named the “Miracle on Ice” as the best international ice hockey story of the past 100 years.[2]

What is this amazing sport event?

The "Miracle on Ice" refers to a medal-round game during the men's ice hockey tournament at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, played between the hosting United States, and the four-time defending gold medalists, the Soviet Union.

I was there. It was a hell of a game—a once in a life time event. That said, what happened after the game has stayed with me for much longer time and had a much bigger impact. That night I remembered the value of trust.

Here’s the deal. Lake Placid is beautiful during the day, but at night it’s easy to get lost. There are no easy land marks, unless you live in the area, to help you know where you are. Everything seemed to blend into a bluish gray landscape that every once in a while was punctuated by a beaming car light. I had no idea where the waiting bus was. I was lost.

I did not dare go to a house and ask for help because I didn’t want to be mistaken for an intruder. So, I just kept walking.

After a while it became clear that I was getting more and more lost and possibly getting further away from the waiting bus. I was getting worried.

Then I saw her. Should I ask for help? What if she thinks I want to hurt her?

Something told me I needed to trust her.

“Hello, can you please help me?”, I asked. “ I came for the game, but I’m lost.”

In the past a voice in the dark was harsh and struck like a whip. This time it was different.

This time the voice was different. It was soft and calming.

“Are you looking for the bus? I saw a bunch of you guys heading to the stadium before”.

To my surprise she got close enough for me to smell her perfume. It was nice. I often thought it was a bit overdramatic when writers, usually male, made a big deal on how moon light makes a woman more intriguing. I take it back. She was intriguing. And to my biggest surprise she was trusting. Nothing about her flinched because she was close to me.

“ I know where the bus is. I’ll take you there.”

“Thank you.”

“Not a problem”

It turned out that I was going in the wrong direction—about 2 miles in the wrong direction

The next morning one of my friend teased me that only I could get lost on a moonlit night and be rescued by a beautiful woman. “Everyone was worried shit about you. We were all about to send a damn posse. And then you show up with a hot babe…what the f….”

I just smiled.Yes, “Miracle on Ice” was amazing. But I’ll never forget what happened after the game. I remembered the value of trust.

I am on a new venture now, promoting the benefits of CBD oil. Come on join me on my journey. You can always trust me to give you the true facts.
