I am going to shut down my websites but want to keep a couple domain names. what does that cost?
Unless you bought your domain at a sale price the cost of keeping your domain is usually the same price.

If you bought it here it's the same price when you bought it $13.99 per year - if you bought it else where you need to check with that registar

Does WA provide a poach-free domain name search?
Yes, lol.
You can search for any domains that you like and unless someone coincidentally buys the exact same domain between the time you search and purchase it, then you will be able to own it (the odds of that happening are 1 in 100's of MILLIONS).
I know other domain registrars have been caught out for stealing domains, we don't operate business like that. We are and continue to be the most ethical company in this space.
Can I search a domain name without worrying about poaching?

I made the mistake of purchasing a group of domain names before doing my research and I don't want them now. I just purchased them. Can I cancel and get $$ back?
That's probably because they're purchased within WA. Go Daddy's refund policy is definitely 48hrs. You can google it, and I've just spoken with them with the same response, however because WA purchase them as a third party, there may be technicalities.
Unfortunately not. All domain purchases are final. That is the same for every hosting platform out there. U will have them for a year and then do not renew them and they will go away. Domains are basically leased by the year as opposed to an actual purchase. If u want to try for a refund or see if something can be done in your case then u need to PM Kyle and ask him directly. He might be able to so something, but I am not sure.
