Day 8 Youtube Challenge: What do you do when people say negative things about you?

Yesterday, my mother came in town (to Texas from Ohio), so I doubled down on Monday, but I didn't post anything yesterday. Even though I didn't post anything, I still checked in on my business, and I noticed that someone wrote a negative comment on my video!

It's my first negative comment on my videos, but I have had naysayers in business with my books, in my other ventures, and this is no different. I wanted to share my take on negative reviews, so you can begin thinking about how you'll handle them, and so you can share your tips with me if you have even better strategies.

It's bound to happen where people say negative things about you. In this business as marketers, we become near public figures. We put content out for the public, and people can (and probably will) respond over time.

The negative comment on my video was in reference to a common debate I've seen here. The viewer thought it was disingenuous to write a review about a product I hadn't purchased and promote an affiliate offer.

I responded (I'm paraphrasing because I don't remember word for word what I said), "I appreciate your feedback. I apologize if you were looking for the perspective of a buyer, however, this review was intended to evaluate the curriculum and the sales funnel, and help people who are looking to acquire internet marketing skills at a great value. I've been able to help others by posting reviews of this sort, which is why I continue. This program I've reviewed is not a scam, however, when comparing it to others in the market based on value to the consumer, I'd say it falls short of Wealthy Affiliate."

Everyone has an opinion and we're each entitled to that. Even if I had bought the $1k+ program, some people still may have been disappointed with the review, and when I can see red flags or an incomparable value from outside of the product, I say so.

I'm only on day 8 of my challenge and breaking thru into naysayer-hood! As entrepreneurs, we have to have tough skin. Look at major public figures, they have loads of naysayers and loads of people that like them--it's just a part of the role.

This is a good and bad sign because you're supposed to have a distinguished voice and be noticed by people, which means there will be some that like you and some that don't. Others have mentioned recieving cease and desist orders, threats, and bribes, so it's a part of the business.

What are your thoughts? How can we develop tough skin to make sure negative comments, attacks and people don't get to us too much?

Thank you for sharing your experience. I think you handled it professionally which is great. I am new to the whole thing so this is great heads up that there will be some negative comment and it is great to know to handel it professionally.

I'm glad it was helpful. You want to appreciate everyone's views: whether you agree with them or not. Ultimately, agreement or disagreement will give readers and viewers both sides of the story and help them to make the best decision for them.

It's good not to be rude. Let's try to understand everyone.

I agree with that.

Thank you.

I have to agree with you on this, I get negative comments on odd occasions from people who have no idea how to market and reply back in a similar fashion showing professionalism, while highlighting still further just how silly they look

Now while that sounds pretty, experience has shown that doing this deters them from repeating the action and shows positive commenters how professional you are

Haha. I agree. That's funny you say that. It sounds like the "kill them with kindness philosophy".

I guess you could say that but it works ')

I agree. You're right.

You have dealt with the negative comment like a true professional.

Thumbs Up!

PS. I think it was Nathaniel who says - come on, it is still traffic :)

That's a good point. It is. I've also seen people like Grant Cardone and Trump who leverage negative comments by directly addressing them, and it seems that get more traffic that way.

I like the response you gave that shows how mature you are in this business. Some of us would skip and move on. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Thanks Ahimbe. I appreciate your kind words. I think we all are capable of being a little "off" sometimes, so I try to respond how I would want someone to respond to me in those moments where I may not make the most sense. Haha. We all fall short at some point.

You handled it well. It is not easy to react in a positive way to a negative comment when you feel like you've just been stabbed, but it is something we have to learn to do.

Hope I can learn that one better...

Yes. Hurt people hurt people (or try), and there's a lot of hurt people out there, so we have to be ready to get various types of responses--some very mean.

Great response. Sounds like you handled it wonderfully.

Thanks Mick!

It is amazing what people will say when they do not see you in person.
This is something we all have to deal with in this business as in any other:
You have risen above it and inspire us all.

I agree. It's like road rage. People can be so mean when they don't see the person on the other side.

I like the way you handled it Tiffany.

It is never, ever fun to receive negative feedback. But, as you mentioned, it goes along with the territory if you review other products or programs less than favorably.

You are doing a great job with your video challenge.

Thanks Sondra! I appreciate your feedback.

As an ex radio host I can remember this particular scenario would be played out on a daily basis at the radio station...I used to get the odd phone call or mail not liking me too much ... how did I deal with it was to only concentrate on the positive feedback... you will never be able to change ones mind once they have decided they don’t like you or your services. Always move forward and never dwell too much on it .

Thanks for sharing your advice! I think it hits the nail on the head. We can't be one-size-fits-all.
