Choosing My First Niche

I'm at the point now where I need to choose a niche. Niche is a strange word, and to be frank, I think it sounds silly. Do niches get ditches like snitches do...? Two things keep me from pulling the trigger, pun intended. I don't want to choose too broad of a topic, such as health or cars, but I also don't want to pick a niche for my first site that could be considered a fad. Keywords, or a site that only garners short term success would really be a waste of time, and be discouraging. Then again, one thing I have learned is failures will happen, and trial and error usually serves me best. Ok, back to the brainstorming session/drawing board to choose a niche or topic! Yes, topic is much better sounding to me, ha-ha!

Hi
A niche to me should be something you know a bit or a lot about, so that you can draw on your own experience,

if it is something you know little of that means that you need to research all the time and this will show in your posts,
the niche should also allow you to be able to post and blog for years to come as this is a business for keepers not fly by night artists,
Your writing should also be natural and not strained as your audience will pick this up too.

Do not worry about it being "broad" , the broader the better because it will be easier to come up with content, just keep it good quality and make it engaging, to your visitor.

Hope this makes sense to you and helps in your decision.

Gary

Thanks, my first niche idea was fidget spinners. Then I realized it was definitely a fly by night thing. Fitness stuff will most likely be my first niche.

Take your time it is important to be comfortable with what you choose, but also do not overthink it, and most importantly, do not use it as an excuse not to get started, when you go Premium in the future you will have 50 websites to play with, in a manner of speaking, I hope you decide soon, all the best.

Gary

Hey did you ever get a niche or what!!!!!

Thanks,
Theo

I think I have some ideas finally. I am currently finishing up the lesson about making my site.

It may sound funny but it is very important... billions of web surfers are looking for different things. Without a niche you cannot determine the specific keyword to use to attract traffic. Without traffic you won't sell anything. For example: if I had a website that sold anything then people searching for surfboards will never find you. They would find a niche sites that deal surfboards. You can have multiple pages on your website with each being on niche but you will be in completion of ranking with a competive website that had 15 pages with relative keyword in the page titles relative to surfing.

Great info Billy. I feel like I know why being more specific, and not being a comprehensive generalist is important now. I feel like I have trouble choosing a niche, but I am getting there.

At first option always better to Niche on something that you like as work, or hobby, etc. This is because you will have experiences and knowledge you can use to build great content. The next option is perhaps something that you would like to do, because having an interest will make you more aggressive in finding relative information for you niche. Obvious that a lack of experience will prevent you from having the creativity you'd like for building content. However, at this juncture you can rely on the experience, comments, feedback of others to build your content. If you like surfing.. .Go to Amazon and see the reviews on surfing. Grab a notebook and jot down the things that you feel would interest a visitor to your site. Surf for surfing blogs and see what these people with the experience are saying. There is nothing preventing you from building good content from the works of others.. grab the hot tips, points of interest, etc. But DO NOT copy and paste to your website. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much! Sadly I do not have a way to surf here, haha. My dad lives in California, close to the beaches. I grew up in central TX. So, if I pick a topic like "surfing" or "metal detecting," I would have affiliate links and maybe adsense to earn money while writing about this great subject?

ha ha.. Yes, surfing was just an example... and BTW I can't surf either... My Dad scolding me in my teens and told me that its either surfing or music but not both. What? So I'm a musician, singer and Christian Song writing... But my niche is on the topic of "Sound Reinforcement" (one of them). Good luck and Lets Do This!
