Apple To Sell Iphone 12 Without A Charger? :)

I had to read this statement like 3 times and had to check the calendar as well to make sure that it is not the month of April and perhaps an April fools joke. After slapping myself through the face I realised I am actually awake, I am not having a dream and it is certainly not the month of April.

No, you did not get it wrong. Apple is not including EarPods or a wall charger with your purchase of the new Iphone 12. The Iphone 12 will only come with a USB-C to Lightning cable. Apple apparently said that excluding the wall charger and EarPods would lead to less mining, packaging, and planet-heating carbon dioxide emissions associated with making the products.

You know what it sounds like to me? Utter BS. Do you think that someone that has an Iphone is not going to invest in EarPods and a wall charger anyways? For sure they will and at an additional cost of course and Apple chargers and EarPods does not come cheap at all. Is Apple going to reduce the price of the Iphone 12 to compensate for the fact that no wall charger or EarPods included? Certainly not.

This is nothing new. What about Apple Macbook Pro? It comes without usb ports, without HDMI, without a DVD/Blu-Ray player, no ethernet connection, so basically zero functionality unless you buy an adapter and that after you forked out £2799 for the latest model with 1TB of storage and straight away have to spend money on an adapter too, just to have some basic functionality? Oh and just so by the way you also realise that Apple does not support VR either, right? Not great when you consider how the world of virtual reality is currently evolving.

Besides the cost involved, what bothers me most is that the Macbook Pro is supposed to be a portable device and now I need to start carrying a rug sack with me for all the adapters I need just to have basic functionality.

Apple is one of the richest companies in the world, yet provides less and less value to their customers and charging them maximum for everything and even now charging them extra for basics that should come as standard with a phone, like a charger for goodness sake. I was thinking of switching from Samsung to Iphone with my new mobile upgrade just for the sake of a change, but because of Apple's greediness and outright extortion of their customers I don't know if I can stomach to even support them, simply out of principle.

What is next? Are you going to have to pay extra in future for having a screen too? LOL. Absolutely crazy and yet Apple gets away with this almost laughable/ridiculous/extortionate behaviour.

Your views?

I cannot wait to hear the die heart Apple supporters trying to defend this latest decision from Apple lol.

But on a more serious note, considering the limitations in regards to the Apple Mackbook Pro with no ethernet, no HDMI, no dvd/blu-ray player, no usb ports, no VR capability, no graphics card upgrade capability (unless you consider an external graphics card), why do you choose to use a Mackbook Pro, if you use one, and also considering the extortionate price as well on top of it all? (Yes we established that you can have some of the above functionality via adapters, but I am sure you get the point). Or if you don't use one, why do you think so many choose to do so? Are Apple products really that great or is it more about brand and status?

In regards to mobile phones. Now that you have heard that Apple is selling the new Iphone 12 without a wall charger and EarPods, did it make you change your mind in regards to your next mobile phone upgrade, or does this extortionate behaviour from Apple not bother you in the slightest and as a result will have no impact on your buying decision?

Apple said that they want to save the environment by not providing a wall charger and Ear Pods. What??? But at the same time they're selling it separately. Huh?? That is the dumbest trick statement given out by a multi-billion dollar company. So far, it seems that the fans don't care. Only time will tell. Thanks for sharing this. All the best!

Not even a Grade 1 student will buy into that statement :)

I agree with them. There far too many discarded chargers about. They should be available on request and not standard issue.

The question is request from where? Is Apple making any effort in this regard? Clearly not. If Apple was to make universal chargers then I will applaud that, but they intentionally make older chargers of older Iphones not to fit on the newer ones to force you to buy not only new chargers but new phones too. For them it is unfortunately all about making more money. They can't be less bothered with reducing the carbon footprint. That is just a very bad excuse they are trying to use to stuff their pockets with more money.

As mentioned already, no one that can afford an Iphone 12 is not going to buy the wall charger and EarPods separately anyways. So where is the saving on the carbon footprint?

Hey Schalk
Interesting to see this article today. My employer went on a spending spree over the weekend and purchased a gorgeous rose gold Macbook (he says he is in touch with his feminine side, lol). That was 20K. Then he bought the matching rose gold usb port and whatever else it functions for at an additional 2K! I was totally gobsmacked when he told me.
I love my iPad and always thought the next Apple step for me would be the Macbook. Sadly, this development of paying for each item separately is not encouraging me to buy.
I am a big supporter of anything eco friendly but find it hard to understand how this latest move by Apple is going to contribute. Let's face it, nothing is built to last forever - and that is intentional so that the companies can survive on consumerables.
Thank you for raising these important points.
Blessings as always
Louise

Wow, what company is your employer running, lol? Sounds like he has got more money than sense lol. It is awesome if you have so much money that you don't even have to think about the price of items. You can simply buy whatever you see and like.

Yes, certainly agree with you that I don't see how this latest move is going to contribute either. Anyone that can afford an Iphone 12 will definitely buy the wall charger and the EarPods too. In the very least of course the wall charger coz how can you sell someone a phone without a charger in the first place lol.

Haha! Fortunately, or amazingly, he has just had the best year in the last 5 years! This chap is one of South Africa's top economists, some serious brainpower contained in his head!

I cannot help thinking that those who can afford the latest and greatest iPhone will surely also stop and think about the additional money they need to spend just to charge the phone! It's insane actually.

Yeah, is awesome to think that although you may hear about the economic woes of South Africa that there are still a lot of people in South Africa that is absolutely raking in the money.

Yes, indeed. Can you imagine? You have to pay extra for a charger which you obviously need. Just imagine Microsoft selling you an Xbox without an Xbox controller or the power chord? That is how ridiculous it is.

I would support their move If it helps the environment with the carbon footprint for sure.

However I just read an article that says the giant tech companies should come together and agree on one universal charger, that's the right move.

We personally use Macs, Windows, iPads, iPhones and Samsung mobiles. But we are generally not in the hype that we must have the latest model for us to function. We do run ecom shops and like to test processes using both iOS and Android, especially checkout to make sure that customers' purchase experience surpasses their expectations.

My Macbook Pro died a couple of weeks ago. I had it for two years. I purchased it from a friend at a very reasonable price. Their products are indeed second to none, I am now on a Windows gaming laptop which is really very fast however I do miss my Macbook pro no doubt. Macs are really quality despite surges in the prices.

The other peripherals you were referring to can be purchased via Amazon at very reasonable prices, except perhaps the charger which has to be an Apple I suppose.

So my verdict, they can be shooting two birds in one stone, making out due to covid19 and at the same time reducing the footprint. However, there’s a surge in angry and unhappy customers.

The issue I have is that a Macbook Pro is supposed to be a portable device and if I pay £2799 for it I would not expect to pay for additional adapters etc. I should not have to start carrying a whole rug sack full of adapters with me just to get basic functionality like e.g. usb ports available to me on a £2799 machine I just bought.

The second issue is that they will not reduce the carbon footprint by this move as anyone that can afford an Iphone 12 is definitely going to buy the wall charger and the EarPods separately too and Apple knows that. It is just their very terrible excuse they use to fill their pockets with even more money.

Creating universal chargers - that I agree with and is a grand plan. But of course they will not consider that. Apple makes money ensuring that chargers of older phones does not fit on the newer ones in order to sell people not only new chargers but also new phones. Getting rid of the 3.5mm jack was also to force people to buy their very expensive bluetooth EarPods. In my opinion Apple can't care less about the carbon footprint. They are clearly simply thinking about filling their pockets.
