My Return

I have been working as a Postmates bike courier for over a year now. I quit IT to spend time out doors riding around the city while making money and I was so happy I made that decision even though most don't understand why I went this route. I decided I was going to transform my life, physically and mentally, life is short and I thought I'm not getting any younger and I didn't want to work a 9 to 5 job, and this also helped me build strong legs for boxing. On April 23, 2018 I had a life changing moment. I was expecting it to be like any other day but I was in for a surprise. I was riding across the Queensborough bridge and collided with another cyclist. I lost control of my bike and flipped over and I was in a lot of pain and couldn't get up. I was lying on the ground wondering if I'll be okay. I fractured my back and was told I needed surgery. Upon hearing the word surgery I was a bit scared at the thought of doctors opening up my back and even though I had the option to go home with a brace I'm glad I chose surgery because recovery would have taken a lot longer and after surgery I didn't have to worry as much about damaging my spine further. After 2 weeks, even though it was recommended that I wait 6 weeks before any physical activity, I felt it would be best to perform light exercise and after doing research online I came across different opinions, I read articles about patients with back injuries beginning physical therapy after 2 or 3 weeks of surgery so this inspired me to give it a shot. For the first two weeks I started using the stationary bike and did some upper body work and shoulder work using a resistance band. This was my routine for the first 3 weeks, after the 4th I started with pushups and very light weights. This week is my 6th, and today my workout consisted of dumbell press, pushups, lower body workout, and some stretches. I also did a couple of rounds on a small punching bag I have in my basement. Immediately after my workout I felt a difference. I did all this while listening to one of Arnold Shwarzneggers motivational videos about never giving up on your dreams. I chose the title bleed for this (title of a movie based on a true story) because my situation was similar to that of Vinny Paz a boxer from the 80s and 90s who suffered a bad neck injury after a car accident and was told he will never be able to box again. He proved everybody wrong, and while injured he started working out and came back to win a world title. I never looked at my experience as something negative, I took it as a blessing because something inside me changed and I am now much more driven. I chose the hard life, the life that most won't chase because I know that in the end I will be where I want to be living the life I dreamed of.
