The drama of our new sleep number bed and how I fixed it
My husband has wanted a sleep number bed for years. He needs a firmer bed than I do and he has suffered for years with our bed that was too soft and hurt his back. He would have to get up and sleep on the couch. It was awful that his back hurt every time he laid on the bed.
We finally got our new sleep number bed delivered yesterday. We had to wait for a month for it to get here. There was a special so we got 0% financing for 4 years! We don't normally buy things on payments (other than a used car and the building) so this was a big purchase. I have never bought a piece of furniture that cost much before or that required payments. I just use what I have as long as possible and don't buy much new.
This bed costs a fortune. We hoped it would be worth it for us to each be able to adjust the firmness on our side of the bed and get good sleep.
I didn't realize sleep number beds seem to work much better on the firm end of the spectrum. I had to make mine softer and softer and softer until I was as soft as it would go and it still wasn't comfortable! It just sags down in like a giant hammock. It isn't soft just sagging! There is HUGE trough where you lay if it adjusted be soft. This caused pressure and heat on new places along the side of my hips since I was wrapped in the bed. I already have chronic bursitis so this was not a good thing. Heat is the enemy and I have to sleep with ice on both hips if they touch the bed. The bed also doesn't have enough cushioning so my hips and back were pushing on something hard at the bottom of the sagging.
I was dismayed that we had made this huge purchase and now my back, hips, shoulders and everything hurt. On the other side of the bed, my husband was sleeping like a rock. He was feeling great and woke up without his back hurting!!!! Yay!!!! So, great for him as we hoped but terrible for me. I wondered if it was just my turn to suffer as he had for so many years. It didn't seem right that we had to pay so much money for such a lousy bed that doesn't work for those that need the soft support however. We could have bought a car for the price of this bed! We need a car...we have a bed with a massive trench. To make matters worse they will let you return the bed but you still pay for the shipping and delivery costs and I read someone said they don't take the base back...I hope that doesn't mean the base with hydraulics etc. that we have since the head and feet move up and down! I don't know what you are supposed to do if you are stuck with that and no bed!
I know they offer a memory foam topper you can add but it is another $400! Neither of us want to put more money into this thing. We also got memory foam pillows with it. They are adjustable with layers of foam you can remove to adjust the height. I have all the extra layers taken out so I decided to try putting those down in the trough. One under my hips and the next meeting up with the first and extending up under my shoulders.
IT WORKED!!! I found a FREE solution to this seemingly insurmountable problem. If I want to in the future I could buy a full size memory foam topper and cut it to size to fill in the trench. I suspect just filling in this trench works better than covering the entire mattress.
I am so proud of myself! It actually works. The memory foam is kind of sticky (not like wet sticky but it grabs and holds onto other fabric) so it stays in place on top of the mattress pad and under the sheet.
Like so many other areas of life such as building our businesses, a creative mind and willingness to think outside the box can save the day. I looked online for suggestions and information and found many complaints but no solutions. I am glad I thought to try this!

I woke up from a good nights sleep on my memory foam mattress, not such a special one as you have but still good.
I remember your previous post where you said you were looking forward so much to this new bed. It must have been awful to discover that now you could not sleep and were having pain.

Hi Taetske. This is so annoying. I left you a comment earlier and now it is gone.
I said I wish I had a regular memory foam mattress at this point. Now the sheets and blankets slide off the end as well since it doesn't come with a regular frame and footboard. You can buy one from the company but it is fabric and I think the cats would view it as a scratching post! I prefer wood. They are also expensive though the company too! I know there are elastic straps you can get to secure the sheets, I don't know about the blankets. Unlike a regular mattress and box spring set, there is no good place to tuck the sheets under the mattress either.

I know all about disappearing text. After writing quite a bit and then have it all disappear from sight I have been on the verge to throw my computer out of the window. When I write I always have to press Fn with F7 to block otherwise half way it suddenly goes blue and all the work was for nothing.
Sorry to hear it is such a hassle with this new bed. I hope you will find a solution for this problem.

Yes, now if I can fix the sheets and blankets sliding off the end since the bed has no footboard or separate boxspring so there is nothing to tuck them into!
