Still Getting Aftershocks

We have had 13 earthquakes with a magnitude over 4.5 since the huge 7.0 magnitude quake last Friday. The hundreds of aftershocks occur every hour or two now which is better than every 10 minutes like they were a few days ago.

It has been a crazy 5 days with assessing damage, helping tenants fix broken fixtures and appliances, getting our water system fixed, having my husband's parents stay with us and help clean stuff up and both of us going to work this week as well. Most State of Alaska government offices have been closed since it happened on Friday but my husband and I have jobs that still need to be filled so we went to work yesterday and today. I need to issue water use authorizations for oil companies and he works for the State Troopers in the courthouse. At least that means we get paid!

The earthquake came at one of the worst times of the year for me at work. I have a massive amount of work to get out and no I am behind and stuggling to catch up. I will likely have to work this weekend as well.

We are still trying to fill vacancies and fix up the building but now we have earthquake damage as well to both our own 4-plex and the 6-plex. My Mom is urging us to apply for disaster assistance...we probably will! I have never applied for or received any sort of public assistance and neither has my husband but this seems like something we need to do. This area was declared a disaster for the earthquake so we might be eligible.

If you didn't see my last post about the earthquake here it is:https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/swangirl/blog/huge-earthquak...

I hope the rest of you are having a very uneventful week!

Jessica

There was a 1964 temblor in the Gulf of Alaska that I experienced at Oregon State Jessica.

Was that THE 1964 earthquake?

Yes indeed. The building was doing a gentle sway>it felt like being in s house of blocks that might topple at any moment!

We’ll all get through this together. I’ve thought about you since we met and hope everything gets back to normal for you soon.

We have had to be at work too as my husband is an attorney and I’m his paralegal. We’ve had to be there for our clients and pick up with hearings tomorrow.

Stay safe!!

Pamela

Thanks Pamela. I was surprised they closed our state offices for three days but they had to assess damage. I hope your home didn't have too much damage.

Nothing major. We had a few small cracks and some minor breakages. We’re still watching everything with all these aftershocks.

Just remember, the aftershocks do die off eventually. There should be a lot less in a few weeks.

Yes, they are less frequent now.

You certainly have a huge amount to deal with at present, Jessica. I do feel for you and believe you should apply for all help that you are entitled to.

Above all else, do all you can to get enough sleep each night. That is so important for your health. I'm sure you know that, but sometimes when stressed, we need reminders.

Thinking of you and your family :)

Valerie

Yes, we will. Thank you Valerie!

This your description of happenings really got me to tears! wow!
We have many Alaskan friends here.

Stay strong, Jessica! Stay strong both of you, guys!
It will pass by.

We have here Puna Strong ( the part of the island where the eruption happend).

ALASKA STRONG!

Send you ALOHA!
Love and light!
Jenna

Thank you Jenna. I appreciate that and always feel a kinship with Hawaii. I have been there many times and my husband and I were married there.

Yes, there is a kinship!
Next time you are here you stop by!

I'm glad you are very very strong, Jessica!

Aloha to Alaska!
Jenna

The most important thing is that you came through it all unhurt! Do apply for the assistance; the circumstances here are extraordinary indeed. We're all here supporting you, whenever you need us.

Yes, we will. Thank you Jeannine.

Jessica,
So very sorry for the stress you must go through after something
as this happens - a natural disaster - no one can control
I do understand this is no consolation but at least you all
came out unscathed and that is the main thing. Possessions are
replaceable the same as buildings - people are not so thankful you are all alright.
Bless you and your family and keep you safe,
Susan

Thanks Susan. Yes, it is frightening when you can't afford to fix the building that is both your home and income source. We are lucky compared to some however. One elderly couple here in this community had their home explode! Then looters hit what was left!

Jessica,
This is so sad - cannot imagine why or how people can be so
cruel to others - I am sending prayers to keep you and
yours safe!
Susan

Oh Jessica. I wish I could give you a big hug and make everything better. For everyone in Alaska.

Thank you for sharing as it allows each of us to keep things in perspective.

It also reminds me of the need for business continuity planning for times such as what you are experiencing. I am glad that you and your husband are in a position that you still have income coming in during this time.

Stay safe.....

Thanks Sondra, yes that is a good point. I guess everyone will get paid for Friday so that is nice! I think Monday and Tuesday (when most people stayed home due to the shut down) would be taken as leave but I am out of leave due to all my health issues so I am glad we don't have to take more leave (that would end up being unpaid). We are lucky to get way more leave than regular jobs however since we work in government.

I feel for you. I hope things get better soon

Thank you.

Hi, Jessica. So sorry you're still having to deal with those large aftershocks. Putting you on the prayer list at church if that's OK with you. Stay safe, my dear friend! Carol

Thank you Carol. We are not in any danger now, this is just a lot of work at this point. There were no deaths or even serious injuries in this quake! Alaska is pretty prepared for these events luckily. It is just not more than the normal shake here.

We will be ok!
Jessica

So thankful, Jessica.
