Still finding earthquake damage and out of time

Last night my husband's computer died. There was a burning electrical smell and it would not start. We suspect this had something to do with the earthquake since it slid off the table and got caught in a drawer on the way to the floor. He is hoping it is just the power supply but it could be more. That computer was something he was very proud of. He and a friend built themselves 6 years ago. It is a huge beast of a machine and very powerful. It has been sturdy, long lasting and reliable and everyone who sees it is impressed. It would cost a lot to rebuild it.

One of our tenants texted my husband at 5 am since the garage door would not close...the sheetrock in the garage bowed out and displaced the sensor for the door. We went to the 6-plex today (we manage but don't own that one) and found more cracks to repair and things knocked down there as well. We had 11 days of aftershocks and a number of them were large at about a 5.0 magnitude. The original quake was a 7.0.

I was feeling so good yesterday after completing my busy few weeks at work but now everything seems pretty daunting again. We aren't feeling good but can't just take the whole weekend off. Now Christmas is coming and at the moment I just want to cancel everything. I know I will enjoy it when it gets here but right now it feels like just more stuff to do. More cleaning, more cooking, more decorating and struggling to keep up with work and property and pets and health and dying cars and computers and everything eles. That is a shame since each year I think "I want to enjoy the holidays this year"."I want to start early and have time to make homemade presents like I did years ago". "I want time to relax and do family things". I would love if I had time to decorate more, make more holiday foods and enjoy holiday shows and events around town.

On the upside I have done better this year than last year in my online business. I have made over 4 times more this year than last. It still isn't a ton but it is nice to know I am improving each year. I won't have time to do any holiday posts however. I wish I did but I just don't. I will be busy trying to get the vacant units ready to go and still dealing with my busy season at work and fighting off whatever bugs are going around. I am barely beating them off so far.

This may sound very discouraging but through all this I am getting traffic and sales on my sites....so....it works!! Once you get things set up they will work for you no matter what YOU are doing. You could be sleeping, vacationing or working at your day job. It does not matter as long as you have a good website set up to get organic traffic and sales.

Onward and Upward!

Sorry to hear you have more issues to deal with, Jessica. I know you have your hands full with working fulltime and taking care of all the earthquake damage. Sure hope Aaron's computer isn't terminal!

I know what you mean about the holidays. When I don't have family here, it's just another day, but I do have a lot of friends. I'm going to be dogsitting for a friend's 3 pound poodle. Will have to run back and forth between Leia and Elle Mae because I can't take Leia with me. Pat is terribly allergic to dogs. Only reason she can have Elle is because poodles don't shed.

Hope you have a chance to catch up on your rest sometime soon. I know when I don't feel well due to my fibro, sleep is usually the only thing that helps.

Take care.

Carol

Thank you Carol. Unfortunately it is indeed terminal. It will need a new power supply, new motherboard, new processor, new graphics card and I don't know what else. It will cost about $2,000. That will empty out our savings.

Everyone was impressed with his machine so hopefully this one will be equally sturdy and long lasting. It is worth it if it lasts and doesn't need work along the way.

So sorry for the compter's demise. Will your homeowner's cover any of the cost? I'm thinking they might consider it an act of God and refuse to pay, but it's worth a try. They're not going to volunteer if you don't ask. Good luck. And give my condolences to Aaron.

Just had a thought that might or might not work. Would he be able to get by with a cheaper laptop and rebuild a new giant one later when you don't have so many expenses from the repairs?

No, our insurance does not cover anything caused by an earthquake. If thieves broke in and stole it then it would be covered. If it was water damage it would be covered, fire would be covered. Not from an earthquake though. You have to buy separate earthquake insurance and that is just for the total destruction of the home. The deductible would be $125,000 for us!

Thanks...I wish it were so.

I thought that was probably the case. I know my insurance doesn't cover flood damage...they consider it an act of God, and you have to have separate flood insurance, just like your earthquake insurance.

Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. I pray things get better for you.
I'm glad through it all your online business is doing better.
Here' s to a better 2019.

Thank you. I appreciate that.

Keeping busy is healthy but do not let yourselves get run down as the bugs will get to you.
Stop take a deep breath to reevaluate the situation and move on to the next job with a smile of confidence.
Tom.

Oh thanks for the dahlia! Dahlias are my favorite flower. I grow the big dinnerplate size dahlias in the summer.

Yes, I am thinking of how to simplify. I just can't keep up this pace. It is simply too much. I am feeling a bit sick today and I don't have time for that with this schedule.

Refresh, you may need one of those sports drinks to pep you up. Try to distract your mind from feeling sick.
My first Dahlia of the season. The next one coming out on that bush is half that colour and half pink. The next one looks less red more pink and fewer spots.
I may cut them back as the Dahlia show is not until the end of February.
Tom.

Yes, I need my B vitamins now, that is for sure!!! And some C, D etc. My husband's computer was completely fried...have to get a new motherboard, new processor, new power supply etc. etc. etc.

At the State Fair here (in August) seeing the dahlias in the flower category are always a favorite of mine. We used to grow plants to enter in the fair competitions but never did flowers. We entered herbs however, and berries and vegetables. We won Grand Champion twice and had many first place ribbons. I had the state record for the largest onion for many years.

My brother-in-law was the onion champion for years.
This year I won the champion pot plant with my Voodoo lily.
The other Voodoo is called the Devil's tongue lily. Only one fly on it. Next day it was covered by flies. None in the house then.

Hey Jessica,
I am praying to my God that He may raise a standard for you to cope with the situation so that in future you may look back and say, "I don't know how I survived that period of stress."
Joseph.

Thank you Joseph. I appreciate that.

My heart goes out to you!
Your positive attitude to get through this, is impressive! So I tip my hat to you!
Hang in there! Wishing you all the best!
Shaunna

Thank you Shaunna! I appreciate that.

This post is encouraging, albeit, not so good for you at this time. Let winter be easy and over soon. I feel for you.

Thank you. I wouldn't mind the winter part if I didn't have so much else to do. I just need to get over this crazy season of business and earthquakes.

In the face of relentless natural disasters, life so fragile, but you face strong, all difficulties will be overcome. I feel lucky live in country free of quake.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAVE A NICE DAY.

Thank you. Merry Christmas to you too.

Powerful lessons, Jessica! Encouraging for all of us to know that while holidays, life and DISASTER gang up on you, your WA business is resilient and moving in the right direction. Great comfort to have something so steady while everything else seems to be shaking.

We can all expect life to throw us tough pitches now and then, including car troubles, house malfunctions and the occasional bought with flu. If that's not enough to screw things up, death and disaster are waiting in the wings to really test us. We don't expect major earthquakes in December, so kudos to you for keeping it in some sort of perspective; many would hardly remember Christmas or unoccupied rental units, much less be handling this all with such grace.

Congratulations on your resilience and persistence and on the continuing progress of your online business. I believe you, your family, your husband's computer and your businesses will all bounce back stronger than ever. People with your strength and wisdom are far too powerful to be knocked down by a mere 1000 aftershocks! That's a great Christmas present for all of us.

Best wishes,
Steve

Hi Steve! I haven't seen you around much. Thanks for your encouraging thoughts! I don't know if you saw it but here is my original post about the earthquake with a few pictures. It was scary. We had 11 days of aftershocks so it has been a relief to be done with them.

Thank you Jessica; your resilience and grit are an inspiration to all of us!

I've been preoccupied by business, home and personal matters away from WA for many months, so I've not been around much. My reasons are not comparable to yours, however. I'm so grateful for your success despite those "distractions". I had to close my eyes and groan when typing "distractions" BTW...

I did look at your previous post, after seeing this one, and I did a bit more research on the quake and aftershocks... Mind boggling disruptions that are hard to imagine; I've nothing in my past experience to compare with it. I'm in awe of your ability to move past this and keep some perspective about life and business.

Thanks for reminding all of us what is possible, what you found inside yourself, and what might be hiding somewhere in us, as well, if we find the courage to dig for it.

Jessica, I can't imagine what you are going through, but I am praying for you, that God will give you the strength you need to get through this disaster. Jesus said, "I will never forsake you...I won't put more on you than you're able to bear."

You and your family and friends are in my prayers!

So thankful you online business is growing, thank you for sharing.

Bless you,

Cora

Thank you Cora.

Thanks for sharing, Jessica.

Thanks Roger.

You're welcome, Jessica.
