New Year's Straddle
I started seeing New Year's Posts here and wondered why for a second. It was only December 30th here, not yet New Year's Eve. Then I remememberd for many of you it is already New Year's Eve! Since I am in Alaska I am almost a full day behind Australia and Japan and 12 hours behind Europe.
By the time it is New Year's here, it has been celebrated by most everyone else on the planet. The only place behind us is Hawaii and Polynesia and the far Western part of our Aleutian Chain with one hour difference. This is strange however since Alaska should actually staddle the International Date Line but in order to simplify things the time zones were changed when I was a kid so that most of Alaska was all in one time zone and only one hour behing the West Coast of the U.S. Alaska used to occupy 3 or 4 time zones and due to it's massive distance east to west it should occupy 5 time zones!
So I will still be in 2020 while some of you spend a new day in 2021.

That whole time zone thing just amazes me, but you do know that it was just put in place so that Santa could make his deliveries all in one night. Happy New Year
Jessica, yes it gets confusing. When I worked in India we were five and a half hours behind UK time. Their logic was rather than have 6 hours on one coast and 5 on the other just divide it down the middle for the whole of India. Makes sense. I have a lot of admiration for the Indians, in fact my best mate is Indian, he's like a brother to me we text or phone every day.

We had a good time flying back from Australia to the US on my husband's birthday. With all the time zone changes, his birthday lasted well over 30 hours!
You also had plenty of time to make sure everything was okay at Y2K, when the rest of the world had already switched to the new century and - surprise, surprise! - nothing blew up or crashed!
