Juggling Two Sites

I just finally added a new post. I have been struggling to add content as usual just due to time, not lack of ideas. I have a regular job etc that keep my busy.

I am forcing myself to alternate between the two sites as much as I can but sometimes if inspiration strikes it seems better to get a post written regardless of which site it is on! If I have a great idea it might be faster to post on that rather then struggling through a ton of research for a different post. It occured to me I could write about the immunity boosting supplements I take so I just dove in and did it.

I am pretty happy to get one done either way. It would be a terrible shame to let the momentum I gained recently slip away! Just keep adding content no matter what. That is what I have to tell myself.

Onward and Upward,
Jessica

I'm still trying to figure out how to best juggle two sites myself. I have a regular full time job as well and one website is getting most of then attention right now. I do want to come back to the second website at some point since I can promote Wealthy Affiliate with it.

It is so hard to juggle a job and two sites! I am seeing my traffic from my first site go down now because all my latest posts have been on my new site. The new site hasn't been around long enough to get much non-WA traffic either. So my traffic is down overall even though I have been adding posts!

It'll probably just take time, but the fact that you're adding new posts is definitely good since that will eventually get the traffic back up again. I'm trying to get back into a consistent pattern on my first website so that I can get traffic to go back up and start earning some more revenue from Google AdSense as well as from affiliate sales. Once I can get into a consistent posting pattern with my first website and feel confident in writing again, I'll start back up on writing posts for my second website. I've already got some ideas for my second website which has me excited.

Sounds like a plan.

Although I started a 2nd site a while back, I haven't kept up with writing content for one of them.. Both sites are relevant and both excite me with what I can share with people.

Working both sites will require a discipline that I have not yet established, so it's time to do some real soul-searching to decide what I want to do, moving forward.

Yes, it is really, really hard to keep up on both. I just realized it has been weeks since I wrote a post on my first (cat) site since I did the last several on my nutrition site instead. Predictably, the traffic for my cat site is slowing down again. The traffic for my nutrition site never got very high anyway since it is still only a few months old and most all my traffic is WA members.

So, even though I have been adding posts overall, my traffic is stalling! Ugggg.

I'm curious, Jessica, you don't have a schedule for writing for both sites or do you write when you feel inspired?

No, I have never had a schedule. With my job and health problems and family stuff etc. I don't have any free time that I can always count on for WA or my websites. Sometimes I can spend days at it, sometimes I can't touch it for a week. I am lucky to have a very good job with good pay, great boss and co-workers and very flexible schedule and good benefits. I need to put that first since I am so very lucky to have it. My husband has been working for years to find a better job and it is very difficult here with our local economic downturn. Many other people I know are in similar situations. These are people with degrees and great references and experience that have trouble finding a job.

I will build this up slowly over time as I can!

I really miss MIchael's posting challenge! That really helped me make sure I at least did one post per week. I have been thinking about starting it up again.

I haven't started my second site yet, but I've thought about it. I liked the recent exercise I did where I had to find 10 long tail keywords for future posts. It's occurred to me that if I did that for both sites, I would have a constant supply of topics to write on.

But I have a day job as well and, yes, that is the major reason I'm not posting as much as I'd like. I feel your pain! And I agree. Keep adding content no matter what. Congratulations on posting more content!

Hi Matthew,

I am not in any of the Challenges here or Bootcamp but I came up with additional keywords myself. I started a new post for each one and just entered the keyword/title and saved each as a draft. That way I have a great starting place whenever I have time to write a post. It helps a little but not enough. I still can't keep up with a job and two sites! My traffic is starting to go down since it has been weeks since I added a post to my primary (first) site. I have been adding posts mostly to my new site but it is still so new it doesn't really get organic traffic yet. It just gets WA traffic when I ask for comments.

So, I guess it's time to add a post to my first site since that is where most of my traffic and sales come from.

Thanks,
Jessica

I've been thinking about starting another site but have put off doing so because of the time restraints you also have. I think you're right Jessica to not worry about giving equal time to both, otherwise you'll lose momentum. It's almost like our sites are our children and we want to give them equal attention lol.

Erica

I'm not a parent, Erica, but I've been around enough to know that all children don't get the same attention at the same time.

I haven't done anything with my 2nd site, but I'm not ready to throw in the towel.

I'm sure that I'll start a second site too Veronica and know it'll take time. Many others here have multiple sites so it's definitely doable. Here's to not throwing in the towel!

I thought that but now I am starting to see the price that costs. I had lots of ideas for my new site so I have been posting there and not to my first site lately. My first site is where I get most of my traffic and sales (and all my organic traffic and sales). Since I haven't been posting to it, the effects will be worse for me there as traffic goes down. I can see it happening already. I really need to focus on that site now.

Thanks Erica...I guess we have to balance both keeping out interest and ideas flowing and not losing all our traffic on one.

Good Morning Jessica,

I know exactly what you mean as I also have 2 websites. When I started here at WA I had no idea what I was doing, let's face it. Now I realize 1 should have been better but that cannot be changed anymore as I like them both.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

p.s. I think you missed this one.

That is very odd. I commented on it yesterday but my comment is not there now! I said it was so nice you got to see them and that I love the tulips!

That is strange indeed Jessica, I did not see your comment.
Happy you read the post. I am now writing a post for my website on the visit to the Keukenhof.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

The main reason I recently started working on a second site is because my first is a lot of research and citing ( which I do enjoy) but my second is more of a free write and sometimes all I want to do is set up a couple keywords and than just write. Now I have that option when that is what I feel.

That makes sense. Whatever keeps you motivated is good!

Hi Jessica. I can relate. I have two sites also, and I go from one to the other also. It does make it easier to come up with ideas to write about since they are two separate niches. If I had it to do over though, I would have just started with one until it was bringing in good income, then maybe started another. Good luck, Tom

I had only one for several years. I just added the second one this winter. I was really reluctant to add a new site but now I am glad I did since it gives me more topics to write about.

It is smart to really get one up and running first though.

Yep. I have to agree. One thing completed each day as a minimum. No beating myself up over what I am not getting done. Some days five posts. There is a great way to have consistency. If you have one day that is crazy open you can work an entire batch and then on busy days drop one in at a time. I am betting someone has built a timer as a plug-in so you could set them all to go live at the same time each day for the following week. If not manually updating is not hard if the content is ready to roll out. Flow with your mind and do not fight it. Sometimes I find myself getting stuck in the behind the scenes mechanics and my preferred settings and it feels like such a waste of time. I have built and managed databases and websites in the past and my current job is tossing up products to a website(one of my many duties) and it never fails to feel like what I am getting done today. I just shift gears and go for something that will give me that big boost when I need that big boost of wow I got that front facing thingy completed today. Other days that behind the scenes feels like okay this is building the properly functioning foundation so it just has to get down and it feels fine to work on it. Sometimes it is the gear my mind is in and not grinding rather it is flowing. Thanks for sharing it is encouraging.

You sound really productive! Good for you. I wish I could get that many posts written.

I am finding it easier to write more often with two different niches to chose from.

Thanks

Well I went crazy and have a bunch of YouTube channels and something like 8 pages so far. My posts are far too short. Aahh had to make a phone call to check in on family and late eating dinner and still have not gotten to today's post yet. Oh wait I did one this morning. Probably my best one. My prime time for brain function is somewhere between 8am-9am up until 2pm and i was waiting on a doctor appointment so i posted a review for board game Forbidden Stars far too short and whacky speech, however it is much longer than prior posts. Many posts sounds impressive until i review my work. Solid good content of proper length is key. I am going to have to invest in Grammerly oh oh oh now i have to check and see about if they have an affiliate program? Wow let that run away from me. Sorry.

Hi Jessica! I get the "time" constraints. It sounds like you have the right attitude. Rome wasn't built in a day, as they say. Your business won't be built by tomorrow, either. But, just keep at it, and someday you'll be able to say, "OK", finished!" In reality, though, I have a feeling that you really won't ever be "done", because you don't strike me as someone who would do that. Instead, you'll be constantly improving and learning, right?

Oh I know all about slow and steady. I spent 10 years taking all the courses for my Master's Degree in Ocean and Coastal Studies...one at a time as I could afford them and had time to take them.

I have been here at WA for several years but just added the second website this winter. Always busy!

Thanks!
Jessica

I'm doing the same thing. Working for content on two niche sites. Like you, I find it helps to be able to write about what comes to me on either topic.

I think if I was stuck writing in just one niche I would get bored.

Good for you keeping the momentum going around all the other stuff you have to do. :-)

Yes, I agree. It helps to have options so we don't feel so boxed in!
